Production[edit | edit source]
Development[edit | edit source]
In March 2021, it was reported from various sources that a film based on Superman is in development and is planned to be released as part of the upcoming DCU.[18] Freddie Goodwin announced he was preparing to begin writing the screenplay by June 2022,[19] however was forced to stop after his other project, that was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was behind in development.[20][21] By 2023, it was announced that Goodwin was instead developing a universe that wouldn't feature too many characters and won't be forced to just DC Comics or Marvel Comics and instead wanted to have multiple characters from both universes.[22][23]

Emma Thomas joined as a producer alongside Freddie Goodwin.
In June 2023, Goodwin announced the first three projects coming to the GWU,[24] which begins with Superman: Return to Krypton, which was confirmed to be directly connected to the film that will focus on two characters called "Gold & Jokes",[25][26][27] which would be focused on the Joker and Booster Gold and the third film being titled Batman: Shadows of Gotham which will introduce the Batman of the universe.[28][29] Goodwin confirmed Superman: Return to Krypton would be focused on Superman and nothing else. Alex Brow joined the project in late July 2024 to write the screenplay. Brow confirmed the film would feature a villain that is from the Superman comics. Brow later confirmed other villains will appear in the film too. Some crew members hinted at some not being entirely "defeated". Brow confirmed that he worked on the Batman: Shadows of Gotham film before joining the Superman: Return to Krypton project in July 2024. Brow said Batman may appear in Superman: Return to Krypton.
By January 2024, Goodwin stated that the film, while being grounded,[30] will feature various themes that normally would be found in a sequel.[31][32] In April 2024, Goodwin pubically announced the film had not started production as it was intended during March 2024 and will begin in June of that year. By the end of May, he once again said production on the film would begin in 2024 but not during the said time. By the end of June 2024, Goodwin officially said production will officially begin in October with filming soon after sometime in 2025. Goodwin confirmed that the film wouldn't be released until at least 2026.
Filming[edit | edit source]
Filming began in March 2025 in-house and is set to finish in September 2025.
