ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the fifth entry in the Dark Warfare sub-series and a mainline installment in the ShooterofIO series. The game is scheduled to be released worldwide on November 13, 2020, for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.[1]

The game was first confirmed on March 20, 2020, when Mob Productions announced that the next Dark Warfare title would release on current-generation and next-generation consoles.[2] The announcement also confirmed that Dark Warfare 5 would be integrated with ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0, the free-to-play title originally released as a post-launch experience for ShooterofIO: Modern Ops.[3] Promotional artwork and the game's three-mode structure were revealed on April 16, while the full reveal on May 16 detailed the campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, release date, and next-generation versions.[4][1]

Gameplay

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is a first-person shooter game comprising a single-player campaign, a competitive multiplayer mode, and the cooperative Zombies mode.[4][1] The campaign follows Task Force Bravo across a series of covert operations involving abandoned Havel Program sites, private military forces, and surviving research networks connected to earlier Dark Warfare events.[5] Campaign missions include stealth infiltration, direct assaults, evidence recovery, hostage rescue, sabotage, and defensive encounters, with optional intelligence items used to provide additional context for mission events.[5]

The multiplayer mode uses custom classes, weapon progression, perks, scorestreaks, field upgrades, public playlists, private matches, and a Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[6] The mode includes standard 6v6 maps, larger objective-based maps, and returning modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, and Secure Line. Movement includes sprinting, crouching, proning, mantling, sliding, tactical sprint, weapon mounting, and door interaction, while the multiplayer component also connects to Wargrounds 2.0 through shared weapons, progression, and seasonal content.[6][3]

Zombies is a cooperative round-based survival mode.[7] The mode retains waves of undead enemies, points, perk machines, wall weapons, mystery boxes, traps, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, and map-based progression, while adding rebuilt systems for character growth, match modifiers, enemy escalation, and objective layers. Players can use Aether Runes, which act as selectable match modifiers, and Salvage, a resource used to craft equipment, repair armor, and upgrade weapon rarity during a match. Zombies also introduces Ritual Events, optional objectives that appear during rounds and reward upgrades, currency, or access to hidden areas when completed.[7]

Premise

The campaign takes place after the events of ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 and follows Task Force Bravo as it investigates renewed activity around abandoned black sites once connected to the Havel Program.[5] Air Studios described the story as a continuation of the sub-series' military conspiracy setting, with the campaign focusing on surviving command structures, private contractors, and classified research that continued after earlier operations were believed to have ended.[5]

Development

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is being developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015), and ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 (2018).[2] The game was confirmed on March 20, 2020, after Mob Productions announced that the next Dark Warfare title would release on both current-generation and next-generation consoles.[2]

The same announcement confirmed a planned connection between Dark Warfare 5 and Wargrounds 2.0.[3] Mob Productions described the integration as part of its wider support strategy for the free-to-play title, which had launched after Modern Ops and was scheduled to connect with the next mainline ShooterofIO release in late 2020. Details about whether the integration would involve shared progression, weapons, map changes, events, or ownership benefits were not announced at the time.[3]

On April 16, 2020, Mob Productions released the game's first poster artwork and formally revealed its three-mode structure.[4] The announcement confirmed campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes, but did not include a gameplay demonstration, story outline, release date, or platform-specific technical details beyond the previously confirmed console versions.[4]

The game was fully revealed on May 16, 2020.[1] The presentation confirmed a November 13 release date, a Windows version, and the game's use of SOI Engine 2 across current-generation and next-generation platforms. Air Studios presented the campaign as a more directed follow-up to Dark Warfare 4, with mission design based on infiltration, evidence recovery, and controlled combat spaces rather than the open-world structure used in Modern Ops. The studio said the multiplayer mode was designed to keep the more grounded handling introduced in the previous year's game while restoring a darker Dark Warfare tone through map design, visibility, audio, and scorestreak pacing.[5][6]

The Zombies portion of the reveal focused on the mode's rebuilt systems.[7] Air Studios said that the team wanted Zombies to remain round-based while making moment-to-moment progression more flexible than in Dark Warfare 4. The reveal presented Salvage, armor repair, weapon-rarity upgrades, Aether Runes, Ritual Events, and new enemy escalation rules as the main additions. The studio described those systems as a way to give players more decisions during a match without replacing perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, traps, radios, and high-round survival, which remained the foundation of the mode.[7]

Marketing and release

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 was announced on March 20, 2020.[2] The announcement confirmed PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X versions, but did not include a release date, gameplay trailer, beta schedule, or information about a Windows version.[2] Mob Productions also announced that Wargrounds 2.0 would be integrated with Dark Warfare 5 in late 2020.[3]

On April 16, 2020, Mob Productions released the game's poster and confirmed that it would feature campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.[4] The full reveal was held on May 16, 2020, and included the first campaign and Zombies gameplay demonstrations, a multiplayer overview, the Windows version, and the worldwide release date of November 13, 2020.[1] Mob Productions said that more information about multiplayer, Zombies, beta access, and the Wargrounds 2.0 integration would be released later in 2020.[1]
