ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the fifth main entry in the Dark Warfare sub-series and the thirteenth main installment in the ShooterofIO series. The game is scheduled to be released worldwide on November 13, 2020, for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.[1]

Mob Productions confirmed the game on March 20, 2020, announcing current-generation and next-generation console versions and a planned integration with the free-to-play title ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0.[2][3] The game's poster and mode structure were revealed on April 16, confirming a campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies.[4] A full reveal followed on May 16, 2020, detailing the campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Windows version, and release date.[1] In June 2020, reports and interviews discussed the game's development history, including a cancelled open-world campaign concept and the decision for Air Studios to take full control of the 2020 ShooterofIO release after a War Games project was moved to 2021.[5][6]

Gameplay

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is a first-person shooter game with a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and cooperative Zombies mode.[4][1] The campaign is built around mission-based levels rather than the open-world format used by ShooterofIO: Modern Ops.[7][6] Missions include stealth infiltration, direct combat, evidence recovery, hostage rescue, sabotage, and defensive encounters. Several levels contain larger combat spaces with multiple buildings, roads, paths, enemy positions, optional areas, and alternate approaches within mission-specific locations.[7][6]

The multiplayer mode uses custom classes, weapon progression, perks, scorestreaks, field upgrades, public playlists, private matches, and a Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[8] It includes standard 6v6 maps, larger objective-based maps, and modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, and Secure Line. Movement includes sprinting, crouching, proning, mantling, sliding, tactical sprint, weapon mounting, and door interaction, with tuning based around grounded movement, weapon weight, physical animation, and responsive handling. The multiplayer component is also planned to connect with Wargrounds 2.0 through compatible weapons, Operators, cosmetics, movement systems, progression items, and seasonal content, although balancing can differ between the two games.[8][3][6]

Zombies is a cooperative round-based survival mode.[9] The mode retains waves of undead enemies, points, perk machines, wall weapons, mystery boxes, traps, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, and map-based progression, while adding rebuilt systems for character growth, match modifiers, enemy escalation, and objective layers. Aether Runes act as selectable match modifiers, while Salvage is used during matches to craft equipment, repair armor, and upgrade weapon rarity. Ritual Events appear as optional round objectives that reward upgrades, currency, or access to hidden areas when completed.[9]

Premise

The campaign returns the Dark Warfare sub-series to a historical setting after the futuristic setting of ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4.[6] The story follows covert military and intelligence operations involving hidden programs, misinformation, private military forces, and classified research connected to earlier Dark Warfare events.[7][6] Air Studios described the campaign as a fictional story built within a real historical foundation, using real locations, conflicts, and historical references as the basis for events occurring behind the scenes within the game's universe.[6]

Development

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is being developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015), and Dark Warfare 4.[2] The game was publicly confirmed on March 20, 2020, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.[2] On June 15, 2020, reports stated that the 2020 ShooterofIO release had not originally been planned as Dark Warfare 5 and had not initially been assigned to Air Studios. According to the reports, a War Games-led title was originally scheduled for 2020 but was moved to 2021 after creative disagreements between War Games and Supreme Studios, a newly involved studio working with Mob Productions. Air Studios then took full charge of the 2020 release, which became Dark Warfare 5.[5]

The planned integration between Dark Warfare 5 and Wargrounds 2.0 was announced alongside the game's confirmation.[3] In an interview published on June 18, Air Studios said the integration mainly affected development through early technical standards, as weapons, Operators, cosmetics, movement systems, progression items, and other compatible content had to be built so that they could later function inside Wargrounds 2.0.[6] The studio said the main game was still being designed around its own campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes first, and that weapon or movement values could be balanced separately once content entered Wargrounds 2.0.[6]

Air Studios said an open-world campaign inspired by Modern Ops had been considered earlier in development but was cancelled because the team did not have enough time to build it to the intended standard.[6] The cancelled version would have used a more open historical setting with side objectives, larger spaces, vehicles, and behind-enemy-lines mission flow, but the studio said it would have required more development time for artificial intelligence, mission design, environments, vehicles, and meaningful open areas. After the open-world format was dropped, the team moved toward a more traditional mission structure closer to Dark Warfare 4, with greater emphasis on handcrafted levels, pacing, set pieces, characters, and mission variety.[6]

The game was fully revealed on May 16, 2020, with a campaign presentation, multiplayer overview, Zombies gameplay reveal, Windows version confirmation, and November 13 release date.[1] Air Studios presented the campaign as broader than Dark Warfare 4 despite the removal of the open-world structure, with missions built around larger combat arenas, stealth opportunities, optional spaces, and multiple approaches.[7][6] The studio also said the campaign would include choices in some missions, with certain events developing differently depending on player discoveries, completed objectives, trust, and how situations are handled, though it did not confirm multiple endings.[6]

The June 18 interview also discussed the game's setting, movement, weapons, and multiplayer-map direction.[6] Air Studios said the historical setting required heavier weapons, more limited equipment, harder communication, and environments shaped by conflict rather than futuristic technology. Movement was described as grounded rather than slow, with sprinting, crouching, proning, sliding, and mantling tuned around weapon weight, direction changes, animation physicality, and responsiveness. The studio also said multiplayer maps were being designed around the historical setting, including damaged towns, military installations, industrial areas, dense urban locations, rural environments, and conflict-affected spaces, while maintaining gameplay readability.[6]

The Zombies reveal focused on rebuilt systems for the mode.[9] Air Studios said the team wanted Zombies to remain round-based while making match progression more flexible than in Dark Warfare 4. Salvage, armor repair, weapon-rarity upgrades, Aether Runes, Ritual Events, and new enemy-escalation rules were presented as the main additions, while perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, traps, radios, and high-round survival remained core parts of the mode.[9] The studio also said Zombies would have connections to the campaign, although the mode was intended to stand on its own without requiring campaign completion.[6]

Marketing and release

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 was announced on March 20, 2020.[2] The announcement confirmed PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X versions and stated that the game would be integrated with Wargrounds 2.0 in late 2020.[2][3] Mob Productions released the game's poster and confirmed its campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes on April 16.[4] The full reveal took place on May 16, confirming the Windows version, first gameplay demonstrations, multiplayer overview, Zombies systems, and worldwide release date of November 13, 2020.[1]

Reports on June 15, 2020, stated that the game had become the 2020 ShooterofIO release after a War Games project was delayed to 2021 because of creative disagreements involving War Games and Supreme Studios.[5] On June 18, Air Studios discussed the game's production, cancelled open-world campaign concept, Wargrounds 2.0 integration, historical setting, campaign structure, movement, Zombies changes, and planned seasonal support.[6] The studio said further Multiplayer and Zombies reveals would be released later in the year.[6]
