The first season of the American superhero television series, The Authorities, which is based on Squared Media and DC Comics. The season is produced by Mob Productions, Mojang and Warner Bros. Pictures, and released on October 19, 2026 until May 3, 2027, and finished with 22 episodes. Set after the events of Minecraft, the season follows a team of powered "metahumans" who set out to stop the powerful Lord Shadowmancer, who uses the deceased against the team of Authorities.
The first season of the American superhero television series, The Authorities, premiered on Netflix on October 19, 2026 and concluded on March 15, 2027, with a total of 8 episodes, after Mob Productions ordered a full season in 2022. The series is based on the Mob Comics team of the same name. The showrunner for this season is Freddie Goodwin, who wokred alongside Sara Case, Benjamin Knowles, Homer Gutierrez and Myla Salazar. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, Rami Malek, Zoë Saldana, Robert Downey Jr., Natalie Portman, and Mads Mikkelsen.

The season was ordered by Freddie Goodwin in 2022, who worked with Sara Case, Benjamin Knowles, Homer Gutierrez and Myla Salazar to write the season. Case directed the episodes. Development for the season began in 2023 with Goodwin. They began working on a story that involves a superhero team that would be created to connect with Minecraft.
Production on the series began in June 2022 when Freddie Goodwin approached Mob Productions with an idea to adapt a comic-book storyline they published in 2016. After a agreement was made, Goodwin wrote the pilot episode in one day, followed by a week of rewrites, to which Mob Productions further agreed to budget the series, and ordered the season to have 8 episodes. Filming was mainly done in closed sets with green screens and specific locations. Filming and production concluded in June 2026.

Chris Hensworth reprises his role as Simon Lowe from Archer that released in 2025. He is joined by Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, Rami Malek, Zoë Saldana, Robert Downey Jr., Natalie Portman, and Mads Mikkelsen. Even though they appear in most of the episodes in some compacity, Jack Black, Tom Holland, and Amy Poehler reprise their roles as Steve Stonecutter, The "Agent" Derp, and Alex Stonecutter from the original series through CGI usage.

The season was ordered by Mob Productions in June 2022, who planned it to feature the "Minecraft" title in it, however chose to exclude it due to the theme of the series' story. The season received positive reviews from critics and audiences, with praise for its social commentary, story, screenplay and the performances of the entire cast, specifically that of Hemsworth. On February 2, 2027, the series was renewed for a second season.

  | ShortSummary    = Steve Stonecutter meets Simon Lowe, known as Archer, who reports his team is ready for training. Alex Stonecutter joins to assist in their training. Meanwhile, Steve and Derp investigate separately. Simon and Alex team up with Aurora Skye (Celestia), Lucas Stone (Titan), and Nathan Reed (Hydron), united in their goal to protect the world. Aurora is driven by a desire to avenge her brother, a victim of Herobrine. Their mission takes an unexpected turn when a soldier, supposedly deceased since 1927 and controlled by a malevolent entity, attacks them. This entity aims to eradicate superheroes. Steve and Derp arrive in time to eliminate the soldier. However, they soon face another threat: Serena Blackwood, or Mystica, who confronts them with intentions of leading her own group and eliminating the current team. Alex attempts to persuade Serena to join forces with them, but Serena ultimately escapes.
  | ShortSummary    = Isabella "Bella" Cruz is targeted by a masked assailant but is saved by Simon Lowe, who eliminates the attacker and offers her a place within The Authorities, a government-backed team that manages threats posed by metahumans. Bella accepts and joins, but struggles to integrate as Aurora Skye and Lucas Vire dismiss her, while Nathan Hale treats her with respect. CEO Jackson Miller publicly expands The Authorities Inc. and assigns Bella to oversee the organization’s image, further isolating her from the team. Elsewhere, Roman Dillion develops the ability to generate explosions through thought and attacks a secured facility, killing several guards and stealing "Dark Matter", a substance capable of altering metahuman abilities. Attempting to remove his powers, Roman instead amplifies them, causing a large explosion. Lowe confronts and defeats him, leading to his capture. As tensions within the team continue to grow, Lowe uncovers that Bella’s abilities also originate from Dark Matter. In a separate incident, a rogue airborne metahuman begins attacking aircraft over New York, searching for an unknown source of power.

  | ShortSummary    = Steve, grappling with the threat posed by Serena, considers eliminating her, while Simon, leading "The Authorities," hopes to recruit her. Their debate is deepened by Derp's revelation of an earlier group under the same name that met its demise through unlawful actions. Elsewhere, Alex encounters Isabella Cruz, a supermarket employee, and uncovers her latent powers, urging her to join their cause. Simon's attempt to persuade Serena to join fails. He returns to find Derp has unearthed critical details about the soldier from the previous day. In a series of flashbacks, a graveyard reanimates its dead, overseen by a figure resembling Steve.
  | ShortSummary    = Simon leads the Authorities in responding to the rogue airborne metahuman attacking aircraft over New York, coordinating with Aurora, Vire, and Nathan to contain the threat while minimizing civilian casualties. The situation escalates when the metahuman begins targeting the team directly, displaying unstable behavior and rapidly increasing power, forcing Simon to make a decisive call that results in the target’s death. The incident is publicly framed as a success, though internal concern grows over the connection to Dark Matter and the unpredictability of those exposed to it. Bella struggles with her new role managing the organization’s public image, facing pressure from Miller to maintain a controlled narrative despite limited information. Meanwhile, Roman remains in containment as tests confirm his powers have permanently evolved beyond initial projections, raising concerns about the limits of Dark Matter. As the team regroups, tensions persist, particularly between Vire and Aurora following recent disciplinary action. In a closing development, an unknown figure is shown recovering fragments of Dark Matter from the New York incident site, suggesting continued interest in its use and hinting that the growing threat is far from contained.

Development
Development
In 2016, the development of a new series set in the Minecraft "Live Action" timeline began, attracting interest from Warner Bros. Pictures. However, Mojang initially restricted showrunner Sara Case from using characters from Freddie Goodwin's Minecraft series and suggested changing the title to "The Authorities." This led to a temporary halt in production.
On June 14, 2022, Mob Productions officially ordered The Authorities to series, marking one of the platform’s most ambitious original projects to date. Development began immediately under showrunner Freddie Goodwin, who emphasized a grounded yet expansive tone, blending political drama with large-scale metahuman conflict. From the outset, the series was designed as a fully CGI production, with Goodwin stating that traditional filming methods would not allow for the level of visual consistency and scale required. Early reports indicated that the series would adopt a cinematic approach comparable to high-end video game cutscenes, though significantly more advanced in detail and realism. Pre-production throughout late 2022 focused heavily on worldbuilding, character design, and establishing a unified visual pipeline across multiple international VFX studios.

Two weeks later, Freddie Goodwin, then Creative Chief of Mob Productions and later CEO in 2018, learned about the project and negotiated a deal with Mojang. This agreement allowed Case to create the series within Goodwin's universe but as a distinct "Live Action" content category.
On February 3, 2023, production entered its primary animation and rendering phase, with several leading visual effects houses collaborating under a centralized pipeline system. Unlike conventional CGI-heavy series, The Authorities utilized a fully digital environment, with every character, setting, and sequence constructed from the ground up. This approach allowed for complete control over lighting, physics, and camera movement, resulting in a distinct visual identity described by producers as “hyper-cinematic realism.” The production team drew inspiration from modern AAA game engines, while developing proprietary tools to enhance facial animation and motion fidelity beyond industry standards. The series’ budget was reported to be approximately $190 million, making it one of the most expensive television productions ever undertaken at the time.

Goodwin committed to funding the first season for 10 episodes. By June 2019, Case and Goodwin expanded their agreement to a 22-episode season, maintaining the original budget. Goodwin also promised increased funding for a potential second season and beyond.
On August 21, 2023, the creative team confirmed that the series would prioritize narrative cohesion alongside its visual scale, with scripts undergoing multiple revisions to align with the evolving production pipeline. Showrunner Freddie Goodwin stated that the extended production timeline allowed for greater flexibility in refining both story and visuals simultaneously, a process rarely achievable in traditional television formats. During this period, early internal footage reportedly demonstrated a level of detail comparable to pre-rendered cinematic trailers, with fully dynamic environments and advanced character performance capture techniques. The production also experimented with real-time rendering technologies, though the final output remained fully rendered to maintain visual consistency across all episodes.

During the mid-season break after episode 9, Goodwin expressed satisfaction with the series' initial performance and its continued improvement with each new episode. It was also revealed that the series drew loose inspiration from DC Comics.
On April 12, 2024, Netflix executives highlighted The Authorities as a flagship project during an internal presentation, citing its scale and technological ambition as a major step forward for streaming content. By this stage, several episodes had reached advanced stages of completion, with final rendering pipelines being optimized to handle the extensive computational demands. The series’ fully digital nature required significant rendering infrastructure, with reports indicating that multiple global server farms were utilized to process high-resolution frames. Producers noted that each episode required months of rendering and refinement, with particular attention given to lighting realism, particle effects, and large-scale destruction sequences.

Writing
On January 8, 2025, post-production efforts intensified as the series entered its final stages of assembly. Sound design, scoring, and final visual polish were integrated alongside ongoing rendering updates, ensuring consistency across all eight episodes. The production team continued to refine character animations, with a focus on subtle facial expressions and physical performance to maintain emotional realism despite the fully CGI format. According to internal reports, several sequences were reworked multiple times to meet the studio’s quality standards, contributing to the extended timeline. The project’s budget remained at approximately $190 million, reflecting the scale of its technological and creative ambitions.
The collaboration between Sara Case and Freddie Goodwin was marked by a distinct creative synergy. Case, in her role as the primary writer, worked closely with a team of co-writers to craft the episodes. Her oversight was crucial in maintaining what was described as "top star quality" throughout the series. She was deeply involved in ensuring that the writing and storytelling were not only grounded and realistic but also carried an undercurrent of heroism, a theme central to the series' appeal.

Case's approach to storytelling was both strategic and thoughtful. In interviews conducted years before the series' release, she began to tease elements of the story, intriguing audiences with her vision. Notably, she made it clear that she intended to write only one season. This decision was significant, as it influenced the narrative structure, leading to a conclusion without any cliffhangers. Such a choice ensured that the season would be a self-contained and complete story, providing a satisfying experience for viewers.
On June 3, 2026, The Authorities completed production, concluding nearly four years of development and rendering. Final quality assurance and mastering processes were carried out in the weeks leading up to release, with the series positioned as a major technological milestone in television production. Showrunner Freddie Goodwin described the completed series as “a fully realized digital world,” emphasizing its blend of cinematic storytelling and cutting-edge visual design. Industry analysts noted that the project’s scope and execution could influence future productions, particularly in the adoption of fully CGI workflows for serialized storytelling.

In 2023, it was revealed that Case had been involved with the "Archer" project a year prior to its release. Her contribution to "Archer" was described as bringing about a "strong change" to the miniseries. This involvement was strategic, as it allowed her to effectively set up the narrative groundwork for the main series. By doing so, Case not only enriched the storyline of "Archer" but also created a seamless narrative bridge to her series, ensuring a cohesive and interconnected storytelling universe.

Filming
Filming for the first season began in June 2025 and wrapped up in March 2026. The first half of the season was filmed alongside the first half. Episodes 1–9 were filmed at the same time episode 10–17 were filmed. Case decided to do this to prevent spoilers for some major plot-points. This careful scheduling was also crucial to accommodate the filming of additional scenes intended to enhance post-production efficiency.

Emphasizing the quality of the action sequences, the production team dedicated extra time and resources to these scenes, striving for a higher level of precision and impact. This approach was not only about achieving visual excellence but also about reducing the reliance on CGI, particularly for smaller, less significant elements of the series. By minimizing CGI usage, the team aimed to cut costs without compromising the visual integrity of the show.

In their effort to balance cost-effectiveness with high production value, the team employed innovative filming techniques. These techniques allowed for a more authentic and immersive viewing experience, while also adhering to the budget constraints. This blend of practical effects and carefully utilized CGI set a new standard for television productions, demonstrating that high-quality action sequences could be achieved without excessive reliance on digital effects.

Visual effects
To align with the unique demands of the 22-episode season, Sara Case, leading the project, directed Mob Productions to approach visual effects with a minimalist mindset. This strategic decision was influenced by the budget constraints, which were initially tailored for an 8–10 episode season. The production team, therefore, faced the challenge of managing finances effectively while ensuring the season's continuity and quality.

The team's focus on prudent budgeting led to innovative solutions in visual storytelling. They employed a mix of practical effects, limited but high-impact CGI, and other cost-effective techniques to maintain the series' visual appeal. This approach not only helped in stretching the budget across more episodes but also infused a unique authenticity into the series, distinguishing it from typical high-CGI productions.

Goodwin revealed that despite the tight budget, they allocated a significantly larger portion of the funds to the season finale. This decision was strategic, aiming to conclude the season with a visually spectacular episode that would leave a lasting impression on the audience. The finale, therefore, stood out not only in terms of storytelling but also in its visual grandeur, setting a high bar for subsequent seasons. This move highlighted the team's commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with creative ambition, ensuring that key moments in the series received the emphasis and investment they deserved.

Marketing
The series, a significant project for Freddie Goodwin and his team, was first announced on June 10, 2022. This announcement was part of a strategic move to schedule and publicize content well in advance. Goodwin described the series as a "big step up" from their previous endeavors, highlighting its ambitious nature. He also shared the premiere date, October 19, 2026, and confirmed that filming was slated to begin in 2025, setting the stage for a highly anticipated release.

In June 2023, further details emerged, revealing that the season would feature 22 episodes. Additionally, there was an open possibility for a second season, suggesting confidence in the series' potential for continued storytelling. Importantly, it was confirmed that the events of the series would be directly set up by three miniseries: "Archer," "The Speed Man," and "Starlight." This interlinking of narratives indicated an expansive and cohesive universe, adding layers to the series' storyline.

The promotional campaign for the series included the release of two trailers. The first trailer, unveiled on June 10, 2026, was a concise 1:30 minutes, setting the tone and expectation for the series. A second and final trailer followed on September 1, 2026, further building anticipation among the audience.

On the day of the series premiere, October 19, 2026, an announcement was made regarding the airing schedule. It was disclosed that after the premiere of episode 9 on December 14, 2026, there would be a break, with the next episode scheduled for release on February 8, 2027. This schedule suggested a mid-season hiatus, a common strategy in television to maintain viewer interest. Additionally, the series finale was confirmed to be titled "We Are the Authorities!", hinting at a climactic and potentially revelatory conclusion to the season.

Isabella "Bella" Cruz is targeted by a masked assailant but is saved by Simon Lowe, who eliminates the attacker and offers her a place within The Authorities, a government-backed team that manages threats posed by metahumans.

Simon leads the Authorities in responding to the rogue airborne metahuman attacking aircraft over New York, coordinating with Aurora, Vire, and Nathan to contain the threat while minimizing civilian casualties.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Critical response[edit | edit source]

"The Authorities," a series that has rapidly garnered acclaim for its compelling narrative and high-quality production, made an indelible mark in its first half, spanning episodes 1 through 9. This initial segment of the series has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, praised for its masterful blend of action, storytelling, and visuals that have set a new benchmark in the realm of television series.

From the onset, "The Authorities" establishes itself as a visually stunning spectacle. The series' commitment to realistic and high-impact action sequences is immediately apparent. These sequences are choreographed with a precision that not only serves the narrative but also brings a level of excitement and engagement seldom seen in television. The decision to minimize CGI and rely on practical effects and carefully designed set pieces pays off, providing a sense of authenticity and immersion that elevates the viewing experience. This approach to action not only entertains but also contributes to the story's depth, allowing character development and plot progression to unfold within the high-octane scenes.

The storytelling in "The Authorities" is another aspect that has captivated audiences and critics alike. Sara Case, the showrunner, weaves a narrative that is both grounded and heroic, resonating with viewers on multiple levels. The story arcs of individual characters are skillfully developed, allowing for emotional depth and relatability. Each episode builds on the last, maintaining a pace that is brisk yet never rushed, unveiling plot points and character developments in a manner that is both satisfying and intriguing. The writing strikes a fine balance between being accessible to new viewers and rewarding for those familiar with the preceding miniseries – "Archer," "The Speed Man," and "Starlight" – that set up the events of this series.

Furthermore, the series excels in its character development. The protagonists are portrayed with a complexity that goes beyond standard hero tropes, imbuing them with flaws, fears, and motivations that render them more human and relatable. The show's ability to maintain this level of character depth while advancing a plot rich in action and spectacle is a testament to the skill of the writers and the prowess of the actors who bring these characters to life. Visually, "The Authorities" is a feast for the eyes. The cinematography is exceptional, with each frame carefully crafted to convey mood, tone, and story. The use of lighting, color palettes, and camera angles creates an aesthetic that is both unique and fitting for the show’s theme. The production design deserves special mention, as it brings to life the world of "

The Authorities" in a manner that is both believable and fantastical. The sets are meticulously constructed, reflecting the show's commitment to a grounded reality while still allowing for the fantastical elements inherent in its narrative. The series also shines in its sound design and music score, which play a pivotal role in enhancing the overall atmosphere. The sound effects during action sequences are crisp and impactful, adding a layer of intensity to the scenes. The music, composed with a keen understanding of the show's tone, complements the action and drama perfectly, elevating the emotional impact of key moments. One of the most commendable aspects of "The Authorities" is its ability to balance various genres. While primarily an action-adventure series, it seamlessly incorporates elements of drama, mystery, and even subtle humor. This blend ensures that the series appeals to a broad audience, offering something for everyone without ever feeling disjointed or inconsistent in tone.

The show's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of its production, from the costumes and props to the background settings. These elements work in harmony to create a fully realized world that is both intriguing and believable. The series does an excellent job of world-building, gradually introducing viewers to its unique universe without overwhelming them with exposition. This careful pacing allows the audience to become gradually more immersed in the story and connected to the characters.

In conclusion, the first half of "The Authorities" sets a high standard for television series in terms of action, storytelling, and visual appeal. Its success lies in the harmonious blend of these elements, combined with excellent writing, strong performances, and a clear vision from its creators. The series not only entertains but also provokes thought and emotion, making it a standout show that promises to keep its audience engaged and eagerly anticipating future episodes. As the series progresses, it will undoubtedly continue to captivate viewers and cement its place as a significant and influential work in the television landscape.
