Deadpool 2 is a 2026 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool. Produced by Mob Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is a sequel to Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), the sixth film in the Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU), and the first film of Phase Two. The film was directed by Lyra Stormwind from a screenplay written by Natalie Kingsley, Oliver Greenfield, Penelope Frost, Quentin Hart, Rebecca Wells, and Samuel Preston. It stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine, alongside Morena Baccarin, Sam Rockwell, Josh Brolin, Dafne Keen, Zazie Beetz, Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapičić, and Matthew Macfadyen. In the film, Wade and Logan are recruited by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) after remnants of the Time Ripper begin destabilizing Earth-10005, allowing the reality-warping survivor Madcap to invade the timeline.

Development began in late 2024 following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds returned as star and producer, while Stormwind was hired to direct in February 2025. The writers developed the film as a direct continuation of Wade and Logan's lives on Earth-10005 rather than another search across the multiverse. Rockwell joined as Madcap, an amalgamation of the Marvel Comics character and an original Deadpool variant created for the film. Principal photography began in July 2025 at Pinewood Studios and took place in London, Vancouver, and New York State before concluding in January 2026. The production experienced a four-week pause after Jackman sustained a minor shoulder injury. Additional photography occurred in February 2026.

Deadpool 2 premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on May 16, 2026, and was released in the United States on May 21. The film received generally positive reviews, with praise for Reynolds, Jackman, Rockwell, and Baccarin's performances, the emotional focus on Wade and Vanessa's relationship, and Stormwind's direction. Criticism was directed at its extensive mythology and large supporting cast. It grossed $972.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $215 million, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2026 and the highest-grossing R-rated film released by Mob Productions.

Plot

Eighteen months after the destruction of the Time Ripper, Wade Wilson lives on Earth-10005 and has resumed working as Deadpool while attempting to rebuild his relationship with Vanessa Carlysle. Logan has remained in Wade's timeline and lives with Laura, but avoids returning to superhero work. The Time Variance Authority monitors Earth-10005 because of the damage caused by Cassandra Nova and Mr. Paradox, while Hunter B-15 has ordered the organization to repair rather than prune unstable timelines.

During a mission against an arms dealer in Vancouver, Wade experiences a temporal seizure in which several versions of the same street briefly overlap. A masked man emerges from the distortion, steals a fragment of Cable's time-travel device from Wade, and disappears. Wade is subsequently arrested by the TVA and brought before B-15 and the imprisoned Paradox. B-15 explains that the Time Ripper's destruction scattered six temporal fragments across Earth-10005. The fragments are causing "echo incursions", in which people and locations from erased timelines temporarily appear in Wade's reality. If joined together, they could reopen the network beneath the TVA and allow a user to rewrite multiple timelines simultaneously.

Wade refuses to cooperate until B-15 reveals that one fragment has fused with his nervous system, making him the only person capable of locating the others. She assigns Logan to accompany him because his status as the timeline's new anchor being protects him from temporal erasure. Logan initially refuses, but Laura persuades him to help after an echo incursion causes several students at her school to vanish.

Wade and Logan follow the first fragment to an abandoned Essex Corporation facility, where they encounter Domino and Cable. Cable explains that he returned from the future after discovering that his family had ceased to exist. He believes the temporal damage is repeatedly rewriting the future. Domino has been working with him because her probability-altering abilities allow her to survive the incursions. The group recovers the fragment but is attacked by the masked man, who removes his helmet and introduces himself as Madcap.

Madcap reveals that he was once an immortal resistance fighter from a universe destroyed during the TVA's former pruning operations. After being sent to the Void, his mind became entangled with a discarded Deadpool variant known as Wade Zero. The destruction of the Time Ripper allowed them to escape as a single unstable being. Madcap believes that individuality and grief are the result of timelines being separated. He intends to combine every surviving timeline into a single reality in which nobody can permanently lose anyone. His powers allow him to regenerate, create hallucinations, and force people to experience memories from alternate versions of themselves.

Madcap exposes Logan to memories of the X-Men from his destroyed universe and causes Wade to experience a life in which he joined the Avengers, married Vanessa, and became a respected hero. Wade nearly gives Madcap the fragment before Logan breaks the illusion. Madcap escapes with two fragments and tells Wade that he will eventually choose the false life because it is the only one in which he believes he matters.

B-15 confines Wade to the TVA after learning that the fragment inside him is becoming more active. Wade escapes with help from Paradox, who claims that Madcap intends to access the Anchor Lattice, a hidden structure beneath the TVA that stabilizes realities around their anchor beings. Paradox offers to lead Wade there in exchange for a reduced sentence. B-15 reluctantly allows the mission after another incursion merges part of Earth-10005 with a destroyed version of New York.

Wade recruits Vanessa, Dopinder, Blind Al, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and Peter to evacuate civilians from the overlapping city. Vanessa confronts Wade over his continued belief that becoming important to the multiverse will repair their relationship. She tells him that she does not need him to become an Avenger or save every timeline, but does need him to stop abandoning his own life whenever he feels inadequate.

Wade, Logan, Laura, Cable, Domino, and Paradox enter the Anchor Lattice through a TVA access point. Madcap has already assembled five fragments around a machine constructed from Time Ripper technology. He captures Cable and reveals that Cable's future was not erased accidentally: Madcap removed it to force Cable to bring the remaining fragment to him. Madcap then uses the fragments to generate a merged reality containing alternate versions of the heroes' lost families.

Logan encounters the X-Men and is offered the opportunity to remain with them. Laura meets a version of Logan who raised her. Cable sees his wife and daughter, while Wade experiences a quiet life with Vanessa. Wade recognizes that the illusion contains no genuine uncertainty and concludes that Madcap has created a world in which nobody can choose anything. He destroys his own idealized home, freeing the others from Madcap's control.

Madcap activates the Anchor Lattice using the fragment inside Wade. The multiverse begins collapsing into Earth-10005, causing locations from multiple timelines to appear across the planet. Logan attempts to disconnect Wade, but doing so would erase Wade from every timeline. Wade accepts the sacrifice, believing it will finally make him meaningful. Vanessa reaches him through a TVA communication link and rejects his decision, telling him that dying to avoid living is not heroic.

Paradox admits that the Lattice can be stabilized if an anchor being willingly shares its temporal signature with another person. Logan transfers part of his anchor energy to Wade, allowing them to separate the timelines without erasing either of them. Cable and Domino destroy Madcap's machine while Laura battles Wade Zero's physical form. Wade enters Madcap's mind and shows him memories of the people who continued living after losing their worlds. Madcap briefly separates from Wade Zero and realizes that merging the timelines would erase the individuals he wanted to save. Wade Zero attempts to complete the process alone, but Madcap restrains him as the Lattice collapses, apparently killing them both.

The timelines return to their previous states. Cable's future is restored but altered, with his family alive and aware of his existence. B-15 pardons Cable and Domino and orders the TVA to study the repaired Anchor Lattice. Paradox receives a reduced sentence for helping the group but is assigned to administrative duty under Peter.

Logan chooses to begin teaching Laura and other young mutants rather than continuing to live in isolation. Wade declines a renewed offer from Happy Hogan to apply for Avengers membership, saying that he already has a team. He and Vanessa reconcile and move into a new apartment together. At a celebratory dinner, Wade introduces Cable and Domino to his friends before Logan reluctantly agrees to stay.

In a mid-credits scene, a TVA analyst discovers that one timeline did not separate correctly and shows B-15 footage of a masked figure entering Earth-616. In a post-credits scene, Wade attempts to trademark the name "Avengers" for his new team, only to receive a cease-and-desist letter from Sam Wilson.

Chris Hemsworth makes an uncredited cameo as an alternate Thor seen during one of Wade's hallucinations. James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and Kelsey Grammer appear as illusory versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, and Beast, respectively. Stormwind stated that their appearances represent Madcap's reconstruction of Logan's memories and not the restoration of the characters from Logan's original universe.

Production

Development

Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in July 2024, Mob Productions began discussing a follow-up centered on Wade Wilson and Logan's life on Earth-10005. Studio president Freddie Goodwin said the company did not want the sequel to immediately undo the first film's ending by sending the characters on another search for a replacement timeline.

In October 2024, Reynolds confirmed that he was developing several possible stories with Mob Productions. One version was described as a smaller road film involving Wade, Logan, and Dopinder, while another involved the TVA responding to damage caused by the Time Ripper. The latter premise was selected because it allowed the filmmakers to continue the multiverse elements of Deadpool & Wolverine while focusing on Wade's reluctance to accept his existing life.

Stormwind entered negotiations to direct in January 2025 and was hired the following month. Goodwin said she was selected for her ability to balance action, comedy, and character drama without treating the emotional material as a pause between jokes. Reynolds remained involved as a producer and contributed to the dialogue, though he did not receive a screenplay credit.

The writing team consisted of Kingsley, Greenfield, Frost, Hart, Wells, and Preston. Kingsley and Greenfield developed the principal story, while Frost and Hart focused on the TVA and multiverse mythology. Wells and Preston were later hired to revise the character arcs and comedy.

The film was announced as Deadpool 2 in March 2025. The title attracted attention because it was identical to that of the 2018 film starring Reynolds. Goodwin said the title was intended as a joke about Wade entering a new cinematic universe and treating prior continuity as optional.

Writing

The writers initially considered adapting several elements from the comic-book storylines involving Madcap, including the character's regeneration and ability to induce insanity. Stormwind felt that a direct adaptation would be too disconnected from Deadpool & Wolverine, leading to the decision to combine Madcap with an original Deadpool variant created in the Void.

Madcap's plan was written as a distorted response to the losses experienced by Wade, Logan, and Cable. Stormwind said the character genuinely believes that merging all timelines would prevent grief, making his conflict with Wade centered on whether an ideal life has value without choice.

The filmmakers chose not to make the destruction of Earth-10005 the principal threat for a second consecutive film. Instead, the echo incursions were designed to show the timeline becoming crowded by alternate possibilities, creating a visual contrast with the gradual erasure depicted in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Vanessa's role was expanded during revisions. Earlier drafts placed her primarily in the opening and conclusion, but Baccarin and Stormwind argued that Wade's relationship with her should influence his decision during the climax. Vanessa was subsequently incorporated into the evacuation storyline and communicates with Wade while he is connected to the Anchor Lattice.

Logan's storyline focuses on his discomfort with becoming Earth-10005's anchor being. Jackman said Logan sees the role as another opportunity to fail people who depend on him. His decision to share the anchor energy with Wade was intended to show that he can accept responsibility without attempting to control every outcome.

Cable and Domino were included after being absent from Deadpool & Wolverine. Stormwind said Cable was useful because the alteration of the future provided a personal consequence of the temporal damage, while Domino's powers created action sequences that could operate differently from Wade and Logan's regenerative fighting styles.

Pre-production

Pre-production began in March 2025 at Pinewood Studios. Mira Silverleaf was hired as cinematographer, while production designer Amelia Hart developed the Anchor Lattice, the TVA's restoration division, and the overlapping versions of New York.

The design team retained the red and black Deadpool costume introduced in Deadpool & Wolverine but added visible repairs made from mismatched materials. Logan received a brown-and-tan suit inspired by his comic-book appearance, which he wears during the final act.

Rockwell entered negotiations to portray Madcap in April 2025 and was confirmed the following month. Stormwind wanted an actor who could make the character humorous without undermining his belief that destroying the boundaries between timelines was an act of compassion.

Brolin and Beetz were confirmed to return as Cable and Domino in June 2025. Their appearances were kept out of the first teaser trailer, though photographs of Brolin on the London set revealed his involvement before the official announcement.

Filming

Principal photography began on July 7, 2025, at Pinewood Studios under the working title Anchor Point. Filming initially focused on TVA interiors, the Anchor Lattice, and Wade's apartment. Location photography took place in London, Vancouver, and New York State.

A section of downtown Vancouver was transformed into several overlapping versions of the same street for the echo-incursion sequences. Silverleaf used repeated camera movements and altered lighting configurations so that the environments could be combined during post-production without appearing entirely computer-generated.

Jackman sustained a minor shoulder injury while filming a fight between Logan and Madcap in September 2025. Production paused for four weeks while he recovered, though second-unit photography and scenes not involving Jackman continued during part of the delay.

The sequence in which Wade and Logan experience alternate lives was filmed on practical suburban sets that were progressively dismantled while the actors performed. Stormwind said this allowed the apparently ideal environments to become visibly artificial without relying solely on digital transitions.

The X-Men cameo sequence was filmed over three days in November 2025. The returning actors performed opposite Jackman on a reconstruction of the Xavier mansion's dining room. The scene was shot as an emotional temptation for Logan rather than an indication that the characters had been permanently restored.

Principal photography concluded on January 9, 2026. Additional photography occurred during February and included revised scenes involving Vanessa, the Anchor Lattice climax, and the post-credits sequence.

Post-production

Daniel Cross and Tessa Morgan edited the film. An early assembly reportedly ran for more than three hours, with several action sequences and Deadpool variants removed to improve the pacing.

The visual-effects work was divided among Industrial Spectrum, Framestore, Wētā FX, and Mob Digital. The companies created the temporal overlaps, Madcap's hallucinations, the Anchor Lattice, and the transformation between Madcap and Wade Zero.

Stormwind attempted to distinguish the incursions from portals used in earlier multiverse films. Instead of depicting characters moving through circular openings, multiple realities occupy the same physical space and alternate according to movement, sound, and emotional triggers.

The film received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for "strong bloody violence and language throughout, sexual references, and brief drug material". The final running time is 127 minutes.

Music

Natalie Holt composed the film's score. Stormwind wanted the music to combine the orchestral themes associated with Logan and the TVA's electronic sound with an intentionally sentimental theme for Wade and Vanessa.

The soundtrack also features "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler, "The Reason" by Hoobastank, "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner, and a new recording of "Like a Prayer" performed by a choir and used during the Anchor Lattice sequence.

Walt Disney Records released Holt's score album digitally on May 15, 2026.

Marketing

On June 13, 2025, Goodwin revealed the film's official logo at the Mob Productions Showcase. The presentation ended with Reynolds appearing in costume and attempting to replace the title with several alternatives, including Deadpool Again, Wolverine 2 Featuring Deadpool, and The Contractually Obligated Sequel.

The first teaser trailer was released on November 7, 2025. It focused on Wade's attempts to maintain a normal relationship with Vanessa before depicting the echo incursions and ending with Logan discovering that Wade had placed an Avengers logo on their vehicle. The trailer did not reveal Rockwell's character or the returns of Brolin and Beetz.

A trailer released during Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, revealed Madcap, Cable, and Domino and confirmed the film's May release date. Mob Productions reported that it received 172 million views across platforms during its first 24 hours.

The theatrical trailer was released on March 24, 2026, using "The Reason" by Hoobastank. It emphasized Madcap's offer to give Wade, Logan, and Cable alternate lives in which their losses had not occurred.

Marketing partnerships included promotional content in Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Marvel Rivals, along with a limited Deadpool menu at Burger King and a line of action figures from Hasbro. Reynolds and Jackman promoted the film through videos in which their characters reviewed earlier MCU and X-Men films.

The red-band campaign generated controversy in April 2026 after several advertisements were placed near schools. Walt Disney Studios removed the affected placements and said that the campaign had been incorrectly categorized by an external advertising partner.

The film's global marketing campaign was estimated to have cost approximately $145 million.

Release

Theatrical

Deadpool 2 premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on May 16, 2026. It was released in the United States on May 21 in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, and standard formats. The film was the first theatrical release of Phase Two of the MCU.

The film was initially scheduled for July 10, 2026, before being moved to May 21 after production progressed ahead of its revised post-production schedule.

The film was released under the title Deadpool & Wolverine: Again in several territories where the title Deadpool 2 could have caused confusion with the 2018 film.

Home media

The film was released on premium video-on-demand services on July 14, 2026, and is scheduled for release on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 18. The physical editions include deleted scenes, a gag reel, an audio commentary by Stormwind and Reynolds, and the documentary Six Writers, One Mercenary.

An extended version titled Deadpool 2: Maximum Effort Edition is scheduled for release on Disney+ in December 2026. The version adds twelve minutes of deleted material but does not alter the film's ending.

Reception

Box office

Deadpool 2 grossed $382.6 million in the United States and Canada and $589.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $972.4 million.

In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Last Signal and was projected to gross $145–165 million from 4,310 theaters during its four-day opening weekend. It earned $68.7 million on its first day, including $27.4 million from Thursday previews. The film debuted to $158.2 million over the three-day weekend and $190.6 million over the four-day Memorial Day period, finishing first at the box office. It was the largest opening weekend for an R-rated film in the MCU and Mob Productions' second-largest domestic opening at the time.

The film remained in first place during its second weekend with $77.3 million, a decline of 51.1%. It crossed $300 million domestically during its third weekend.

Internationally, the film opened to $224.1 million from 52 markets, for a worldwide opening of $414.7 million over four days. Its largest opening markets included the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Germany, Brazil, France, and South Korea.

The film crossed $500 million worldwide on May 31, $750 million on June 15, and $900 million on July 3. Its theatrical run was largely complete by late July, with a worldwide gross of $972.4 million.

The film was estimated to have generated a net profit of approximately $238 million after accounting for production costs, marketing, participations, and home-entertainment revenue.

Critical response

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 82% of 398 critics' reviews were positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The website's consensus described the film as an uneven but sincere sequel that finds its strongest material in Wade's existing relationships. Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average score of 68 out of 100, based on 61 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported an 88% positive score.

Critics praised the performances of Reynolds, Jackman, Rockwell, and Baccarin. Reviewers also responded positively to the decision to continue Wade and Logan's relationship on Earth-10005 rather than repeat the previous film's search across alternate realities.

Rockwell's portrayal of Madcap was widely regarded as a highlight. Several critics noted that the character's plan reflected Wade's desire to escape disappointment rather than functioning solely as a threat to the multiverse.

The Hollywood Reporter praised Stormwind's treatment of Wade and Vanessa's relationship but considered the TVA mythology overly complicated. Variety described the film as an overstuffed but frequently inspired studio comedy and praised Jackman's quieter performance. Empire awarded the film four stars out of five, describing it as more emotionally focused than Deadpool & Wolverine despite its larger ensemble.

The use of six credited screenwriters attracted criticism, with some reviewers finding the film's tone inconsistent. The Guardian argued that its emotional scenes were occasionally undermined by jokes, while IGN considered the number of returning characters distracting during the second act.

The Anchor Lattice climax received a mixed response. Critics praised its visual effects and the decision to resolve the conflict through Wade and Logan sharing the anchor energy, but some considered the sequence too similar to the Time Ripper climax of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Accolades

The film received nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Stunt Coordination at the 2026 Mob Film Awards. Rockwell was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, while Reynolds and Jackman received a joint nomination for Best On-Screen Team.

Future

In June 2026, Goodwin said that Mob Productions had not formally approved another standalone Deadpool film but expected Reynolds and Jackman to return in future MCU projects. Reynolds said that he was interested in a smaller film centered on Wade, Vanessa, and their friends rather than another multiverse storyline.

The mid-credits scene featuring an unidentified masked figure entering Earth-616 was intended to connect the film with a later Phase Two project. Stormwind said the scene was not necessarily setting up a direct sequel.
