| ShortSummary    = Alex Singh, a high school student, discovers his sister Anika bound in a locker. Witnessing a psychic vision of her tormentors, he retaliates by confronting them in the restroom, resulting in his suspension for a week. Concerned for his well-being, Lois Singh decides to withdraw him from the school and enrolls him in South City High School. However, Alex soon learns that this institution is primarily for Supported Learners, colloquially referred to as "outcasts" due to their possession of powers. Alex is placed in the Supported Learners' section known as the "SLC." On his first day, he faces a confrontation with Ms. Natalie Jackson, the department leader, who summons him to her office for a meeting. She cautions him about his behavior, threatening consequences if he fails to comply, before sending him to class. There, he meets Bailey Roofer, who explains the class regulations and reveals his mind-reading abilities. During a vision, Alex glimpses himself kneeling over the lifeless bodies of everyone, but the identity of the source remains unknown.

| ShortSummary    = Alex persuades his teacher, Jenna Doremlaire, to allow him access to her laptop. He searches through the student list in hopes of identifying the group of students capable of projecting visions onto others, but he discovers that no students possess such abilities. After returning to class, Alex encounters Christopher Styles, known as "Chris," who advises him on his behavior and emphasizes the need to earn trust to gain privileges like breaks in the schoolyard instead of being confined to his room. Meanwhile, Ms. Jackson engages in a discussion with Principal Karen Smart, who encourages Jackson to continue her work within her sector of the school. When Alex rejoins his class, Principal Smart summons him for a conversation to discuss the school's policies. Alex shares his visions of the school's impending doom, but Principal Smart dismisses them as a figment of his imagination, refusing to believe him and instructing him to return to class. Inspired by Jackson's plan, Principal Smart gives it her approval.

| ShortSummary    = Wells, Jeff, and Max swiftly rush into Alex's room, saving him from bleeding out. After five hours, Alex explains that he experienced another vision that led to his distressed state. Natalie engages in a conversation with Karen, who emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe environment within the school. Natalie proposes a plan to strip all students of their powers, allowing them to reintegrate into the regular world as ordinary humans. Meanwhile, Alex, Wells, Jeff, and Max devise a strategy to identify and halt the source of Alex's visions. However, they soon discover that Alex himself possesses psychic abilities. Although Alex is aware of his powers, he lacks control and proficiency in utilizing them. The group embarks on a journey to train Alex, with Jeff deducing that his visions manifest when he experiences worry or fear. Wells, Max, Jeff, and Max assist Alex in honing his abilities, teaching him to utilize them without relying on anxiety or trepidation, leading to the cessation of his visions. In the meantime, Natalie confronts Jenna, issuing a threat of termination unless Jenna complies with her instructions. Jenna apologizes and pledges her cooperation.

The project was developed as a new serialized interpretation of the Superboy character centered on Alex Singh, an extraterrestrial raised on Earth who abandoned his public identity following the destruction of South City. An eight-episode first season was commissioned in early 2026.

Guest
Alex Brow, who developed the season and serves as one of its primary writers, said the series was designed to begin after the event that would traditionally conclude a superhero origin story. Rather than showing Alex gradually discovering his abilities, the opening episode establishes that he has already been Superboy, suffered a devastating loss and spent eight years attempting to distance himself from the identity. Brow described the season as being about "what happens after the symbol fails the person wearing it", adding that Alex's central conflict was not whether he possessed the power to become a hero, but whether he still believed that becoming one was worthwhile.

Production
The producers chose an eight-episode structure to allow the season to tell one continuous story rather than use a predominantly episodic format. Brow stated that there was "never a version where Alex fought a different villain every week", explaining that each episode was intended to reveal another part of the mystery surrounding his arrival on Earth, the organization Obsidian and the conflict between the Aethari and the Veyari Dominion. Although the season was written to provide a conclusion to its central storyline, it was not developed as a miniseries, with the producers indicating that further seasons could explore the consequences of Alex's decisions.

Brow was selected to direct the series premiere, "Ashes from Tomorrow", while Freddie Goodwin was hired to direct the remaining seven episodes. Goodwin said the directors wanted the season to feel as though it was "constantly widening", beginning with Alex's isolated life in Chicago before gradually expanding into a story involving secret organizations, alien civilizations and events affecting the entire planet. He added that maintaining Alex's personal perspective remained important even as the scale of the season increased.

Development
Elridge House and Blackveil described the series as a character-driven science-fiction drama rather than a conventional superhero procedural. Brow said the production avoided presenting Alex as an invulnerable figure, explaining: "He can survive things that would kill almost anybody, but that does not make him emotionally indestructible. The entire season is built around people discovering that difference."
The series was picked up by Netflix on January 31, 2014 with a 8-episode order.

Writing
Writing
The first season focuses on character Alex Singh, who at first is focused entirely on his "vision" problem.
The writers' room began work in early 2026. Brow developed the overall seasonal story with Lena Cross, while Jackson Gold joined the writing team during development of the middle episodes. The writers established the conclusion of the season before completing the individual scripts, allowing earlier episodes to introduce imagery, dialogue and character decisions that would be revisited during the two-part finale.

The season begins eight years after the first Veyari attack on South City. Alex, now 25 years old, is living in Chicago and has largely stopped using his abilities. Brow said the time jump was necessary because the series was not intended to depict Alex immediately recovering from the deaths of Jack and Lisa Singh. He explained that the character had "already tried to move forward and failed quietly for years" before the events of the series force him to confront his past.

The writers identified identity, grief, inherited authority and found family as the season's central themes. Alex's Aethari name, Alexander Val'Aeth, was used to represent the identity imposed upon him by his biological lineage, while Alex Singh represented the life created for him by his adoptive parents. Cross said the writers did not view either identity as false, explaining that the conflict came from other characters insisting that Alex must choose one and reject the other.

The fictional organizations Obsidian and Helix were created to present opposing human responses to extraterrestrial life. Obsidian was conceived as an institution that had monitored Alex since his arrival but remained divided over whether to protect, study or control him. Helix was written as a more openly exploitative organization seeking access to Aethari and Veyari technology. Brow said neither group was intended to be entirely separate from Alex's personal history, with their involvement gradually revealing that the circumstances of his arrival were more complicated than he had believed.

Supreme Marshal Varyx appears in the premiere but is largely withheld from the middle of the season before returning in "When the Stars Kneel". Brow said the writers wanted Varyx to remain present through the consequences of his earlier actions rather than repeatedly confronting Alex. He described the character as "the shadow hanging over the season", adding: "The audience should feel that he is coming long before he physically returns." Varyx's renewed pursuit of Alex forms the primary conflict of the final three episodes.

The first bronze drafts of "Ashes from Tomorrow" and "The Shape of Falling" were completed on May 22, 2026. Bronze drafts of "Saints Don't Descend" and "Everfall" followed on June 3. "Blood Remembers" and "When the Stars Kneel" were completed on July 27, while both parts of the season finale, "The World We Leave Behind" and "The World We Choose", were completed on July 29. The credited writer of "Saints Don't Descend" had not been publicly announced by that date.

Brow wrote the premiere and "Blood Remembers", and co-wrote "The Shape of Falling", "When the Stars Kneel" and both parts of the finale with Cross. Cross co-wrote "Everfall" with Gold. Brow and Cross described the final two episodes as one continuous story divided at its emotional turning point rather than two independently structured episodes.

Regarding the finale, Brow said the season had been constructed around a choice Alex would eventually have to make about who possessed authority over his life. He said the conclusion was intended to resolve the question introduced in the premiere: "Is he the child Earth found, the heir another world lost, or something he gets to define for himself?"

Aramis Knight was cast in the lead role of Alex Singh / Alexander Val'Aeth / Superboy. Brow said Knight was selected because the production needed an actor who could present Alex as physically powerful while still conveying the character's exhaustion and reluctance to return to public life. Knight underwent wire, movement and fight training in preparation for the role, with the production developing separate physical styles for Alex's controlled flight and his less stable uses of Aethari energy.

Rebecca Ferguson and Joel Kinnaman joined the cast as Obsidian director Elena Cross and tactical commander Mason Reed, respectively. The characters were written as having opposing methods but a shared history connected to Alex's arrival. Goodwin described Elena as someone who had "spent most of her life preparing for Alex to become a threat", while Reed was conceived as a soldier increasingly uncertain that Obsidian's secrecy could still be justified.

Lee Pace was cast as Kael, the Aethari guardian responsible for bringing Alex to Earth, while Christopher Judge was cast as Supreme Marshal Varyx. Brow said Pace's performance was intended to leave the audience uncertain whether Kael was acting as Alex's protector, servant or jailer. Judge performed Varyx through a combination of on-set acting, prosthetics and performance capture. His voice was recorded without substantial digital alteration, with the sound department instead using environmental effects to give the character a greater physical presence.

Xolo Maridueña and Dylan Minnette were cast as Alex's childhood friends Jackson Reyes and Ethan Miller. Maridueña described Jackson as one of the few people who continues to treat Alex as a person rather than an alien or superhero. Ethan was written as a more complicated connection to Alex's former life, having spent years investigating the South City incident and becoming involved with Helix.

Oscar Isaac was cast as former Aethari sovereign Seran Val'Aeth, Alex's biological father, with Morena Baccarin cast as his mother, Lysara Val'Aeth. Brow said Seran and Lysara were not intended to replace Jack and Lisa Singh in Alex's life, explaining that the season instead examines the discomfort of meeting biological parents who remember a relationship that Alex was too young to retain.

The remaining principal cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Obsidian xenotechnology specialist Dr. Imani Shaw, Isabela Merced as systems analyst Maya Torres, Michael Jai White as Falcon Bar owner Marcus Hale, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Jack Singh and Parminder Nagra as Lisa Singh. Ramamurthy and Nagra appear through scenes set during Alex's childhood, archival recordings and memories that continue to influence him in the present-day storyline.

The recurring cast includes Andrew Scott as the Helix commander Proctor, Ruth Wilson as Dr. Sloane Varr, Doug Jones as Sentinel and Winston Duke as the Veyari officer Veyr-Thal. Keith David and Shohreh Aghdashloo provide the voices of the Custodian and the Anchor, respectively.

Filming
Principal photography began in April 2026 and was still underway as of July 29. The season was filmed in production blocks rather than episode order, allowing sets representing Obsidian, Helix and the alien Anchor network to be reused across multiple episodes. Brow directed the premiere as a separate opening block before Goodwin assumed directing duties for the remainder of the season.

The production used a combination of constructed sets, location filming and virtual production. The Falcon Bar and sections of South City were built as practical environments, while Obsidian's underground facility was constructed as a connected multi-level set to allow scenes to move between its command center, laboratories and lower containment areas without relying entirely on digital extensions.

Location photography representing Chicago was combined with second-unit footage of the city's streets and riverfront. Arctic sequences were filmed using refrigerated sets, artificial snow and exterior landscape plates, while the Everfall storyline combined rainforest location work with a large practical entrance set. Scenes set aboard Veyari vessels and within the Anchor network used partial physical environments surrounded by digital extensions.

Knight performed a significant portion of Alex's wire work. The production differentiated his movement from conventional flying superheroes by giving Alex's flight a slight instability whenever his emotions disrupted his control. Goodwin said the intention was for the audience to recognize Alex's emotional state through movement before he spoke.

Filming of the final two episodes was designed as the season's largest production block. Sets created for South City, the Veyari dreadnought and the Aethari world of Aethara were used together for the finale. The producers said the final episodes required more stunt performers, practical destruction and visual-effects photography than the first six episodes combined. Principal photography was expected to conclude in August 2026.

Design and visual effects
The production developed separate visual languages for Aethari, Veyari, Obsidian and Helix technology. Aethari technology was designed around curved silver surfaces, fluid light and structures that appeared grown rather than manufactured. Veyari machinery used darker materials, rigid geometry and crown-like projections, while human technology remained visibly mechanical and imperfect.

Alex's abilities were depicted using silver-gold energy intended to resemble light moving beneath metal. The visual-effects team avoided presenting the energy as conventional electricity or fire, instead designing it to react to Alex's body and surroundings as though it possessed weight. Varyx's energy and the Veyari Crown were given a colder white appearance to distinguish their use of the same underlying technology.

Varyx's armor consisted of a practical suit enhanced with digital height, facial details and moving sections. Judge's physical performance was retained wherever possible, while visual effects increased the character's scale and added the crown structures extending from his armor. The damaged portion of the armor was designed to preserve the injury Varyx received during the first South City attack.

The Anchor, Everfall and the Throne Gate were created through a combination of practical set pieces and computer-generated environments. Goodwin said the alien structures were designed to appear ancient without resembling ruins, explaining that they were "still working exactly as intended, which is much more frightening than finding something broken."

Music
The season's composer had not been publicly announced as of July 29, 2026. The producers said the score would combine orchestral themes with processed choral and electronic elements. Alex's theme was designed to remain incomplete during the early episodes, with additional instrumentation introduced as he gradually accepts parts of his human and Aethari identities.

Development[edit | edit source]

Development on Superboy began at Elridge House Productions in late 2025, with Blackveil Studios subsequently joining the series as a co-producer. The project was developed as a new serialized interpretation of the Superboy character centered on Alex Singh, an extraterrestrial raised on Earth who abandoned his public identity following the destruction of South City. An eight-episode first season was commissioned in early 2026.

Writing[edit | edit source]

Casting[edit | edit source]

Aramis Knight was cast in the lead role of Alex Singh / Alexander Val'Aeth / Superboy.
