Dark Warfare 4 received generally positive reviews, with praise for its Zombies mode, atmosphere, campaign presentation, and return to a more familiar multiplayer structure, while criticism was directed at its conservative campaign design and some uneven multiplayer maps.

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is a first-person shooter built around Campaign, Multiplayer, and cooperative Zombies. The game uses the SOI Engine and continues the franchise's current-generation-only platform approach, with no 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U versions announced.
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is a first-person shooter game. It comprises three main game modes: a single-player campaign mode; a competitive multiplayer component; and the cooperative Zombies mode. The campaign includes reactive alarm states, optional intelligence recovery, alternate entry routes, and a Field Evidence system used to collect files, recordings, photographs, and physical objects for additional story context.

Movement includes sprinting, crouching, going prone, mantling, vaulting, sliding, and contextual climbing through low openings, damaged walls, and interior combat spaces. Air Studios described movement as faster than ShooterofIO: 1950 but more controlled than the studio's earlier experimental builds, with the goal of preserving the tense pacing of Dark Warfare III while making close-quarters combat smoother.
The multiplayer mode features 12 core 6v6 maps at launch, accompanied by returning modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, Capture the Flag, and Secure Line. New modes include Breachline, in which teams fight to open and defend sequential access points across a map, and Blackout Control, a variant built around temporary radar disruption and objective capture. The game uses traditional custom classes, perks, scorestreaks, weapon progression, standard mini-map behavior in most public modes, and Blacksite Streak Tuning, which gives additional score value to objective play and support actions without replacing scorestreaks. Movement changes include faster mantle recovery and smoother slide-to-fire timing compared with ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III.

Weapons include assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, light machine guns, marksman rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, launchers, and melee weapons. Attachments affect recoil, range, handling, aim speed, magazine capacity, optics, suppression, and movement behavior. Air Studios stated that the weapon sandbox is designed around readable recoil, stronger weapon identity, and fewer extreme handling combinations than several earlier modern-set entries.
Zombies is a round-based cooperative survival mode centered on the launch map "Gravenhurst", which is set in a European town affected by an unstable Aetheris breach. The mode includes perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, main quests, traps, hidden radios, and high-round survival. A new system called Fractures temporarily changes parts of a map by altering enemy spawns, opening short-lived routes, or revealing quest objects; players can disable Fractures before starting a Zombies match.

Progression is shared across Multiplayer and Zombies where supported. Players earn experience through eliminations, assists, objective play, match completion, weapon usage, challenges, Zombies rounds, quest progress, and seasonal assignments. Profile progression unlocks weapons, attachments, perks, equipment, scorestreaks, Zombies upgrades, cosmetics, calling cards, emblems, and challenge rewards.
Plot
The campaign follows Task Force Bravo as they investigate renewed activity surrounding classified facilities connected to earlier black operations. After a rescue unit disappears inside an abandoned communications site, the task force discovers that several sealed facilities have begun transmitting emergency codes years after their closure. The investigation leads the group through a chain of covert operations involving black-site records, private military forces, missing personnel, and surviving command structures linked to earlier research programs. The campaign ends with Task Force Bravo destroying a buried relay system used to re-activate dormant facilities, while recovered evidence suggests that several people connected to the program escaped before the final operation.

Zombies
Campaign is the single-player story mode of Dark Warfare 4. The story follows Task Force Bravo after several abandoned black sites connected to the Havel Program and Eidolon Directorate begin transmitting emergency codes years after being officially closed. Air Studios described the Campaign as a "buried war" story, focusing on military operations that were never recorded, facilities that were erased from public maps, and surviving command structures that continue operating after their governments believe they have been dismantled.

| ShortSummary = Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen travel to Gravenhurst, a European town where buildings, streets, and memories have begun overlapping with Aetheris. Richtofen believes the breach is reacting to his return and warns that the dimension is no longer trying to escape randomly, but is searching for places connected to people who survived earlier breaches. The crew restore power, open sealed parts of the town, and assemble the map's Wonder Weapon to stabilize several Fractures. After defeating the entity beneath the town, they recover a fragment of an old Aetheris signal that points toward a second breach site. Richtofen admits that Aetheris may have followed him back through memories rather than through a physical door.

| ShortSummary = The crew follow the signal from Gravenhurst to Wulfsheim, a mountain village built around a sealed chapel and an abandoned recovery station used after the first Aetheris breaches. The town is colder and quieter than Gravenhurst, with Fractures appearing as frozen echoes of events that happened decades earlier. Richtofen discovers that the station once attempted to separate human memory from Aetheris exposure, leaving trapped figures that repeat the final hours before the village was sealed. After restoring the chapel bells and activating the recovery station, the crew use the Wonder Weapon to draw the breach into one place. They defeat the entity bound beneath the chapel, but the recovered transmission reveals that Aetheris is not opening doors at random. It is following the crew through places where the Havel Program tried to erase evidence of earlier contact.

| OriginalAirDate = 2019
| ShortSummary = The crew travel to Eisbruch, a frozen research port where the Havel Program shipped recovered Aetheris material through civilian cover routes. The site is buried under ice, but its signal tower continues broadcasting fragments of the same transmission recovered at Wulfsheim. Sarah discovers that the port was used to move people who survived early exposure, while Nikolai recognizes military markings connected to his former unit. Richtofen warns that the ice is preserving the breach rather than containing it. After restoring the port's engines and redirecting power through the tower, the crew open a passage beneath the harbor and confront the entity feeding from the frozen signal. They shut down the transmission, but the collapse reveals a buried map of other containment sites. Noah realizes that Gravenhurst, Wulfsheim, and Eisbruch were not separate breaches, but parts of one route created to hide the first true doorway into Aetheris.

| OriginalAirDate = 2019
| ShortSummary = The map recovered at Eisbruch leads the crew to Karthaus, a ruined monastery converted into a signal archive after the earliest Aetheris incidents. The site contains records from Gravenhurst, Wulfsheim, and Eisbruch, but the archive has begun rewriting itself as Fractures pull memories from each member of the crew into the building. Noah and Sarah discover that the Havel Program did not create the route, but followed one that already existed beneath older religious and military sites. Richtofen finds references to a final door hidden behind several false containment stations. After restoring the archive mechanism and burning corrupted records, the crew defeat the entity guarding the monastery's lower vault. The surviving files identify the final site as a fortified relay built to make the Aetheris breach permanent. Richtofen warns that closing it may require severing his own connection to the dimension.

| Title = The Last Door
| OriginalAirDate = 2019
| ShortSummary = Noah, Sarah, Nikolai, and Richtofen reach the final relay, a fortress-like station constructed around the original doorway into Aetheris. The site uses machinery and memory anchors gathered from previous breaches, allowing Aetheris to rebuild parts of Gravenhurst, Wulfsheim, Eisbruch, and Karthaus inside one unstable location. The crew recover the last fragments of the route and use them to reverse the relay, but Aetheris attempts to keep Richtofen by offering each survivor a restored version of what they lost. After rejecting the visions, the group overload the doorway and defeat the entity controlling the relay. Richtofen remains alive but loses his direct connection to Aetheris, while the final transmission suggests that the dimension has been sealed from Earth rather than destroyed. The crew escape as the fortress collapses, ending the main Zombies storyline of Dark Warfare 4.

The announced story begins when a rescue team disappears inside a sealed underground communications facility known as Site Kestrel. Task Force Bravo is sent to recover the missing unit, but discovers that the site is part of a wider chain of dormant installations reactivated by an unknown group called the Meridian Directorate. The Directorate is described as a successor network made up of former Eidolon handlers, private military officers, intelligence defectors, and scientists who believe the old Havel research should not have been abandoned.
Development
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), and ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015). The game was published by Mob Productions and uses the SOI Engine.

The Campaign is built around infiltration, evidence recovery, sabotage, close-quarters combat, prisoner rescue, signal interception, and large-scale containment failures. Missions take place across flooded underground facilities, a collapsing offshore data platform, a sealed mountain relay, a night-time industrial city, a remote detention complex, and a buried command bunker. Several missions include optional routes, alarm states, destructible light sources, enemy search behavior, and classified evidence that expands the story outside the critical path.
The game continued the franchise's current-generation platform approach, with versions released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. No 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U versions were announced.

Air Studios stated that Dark Warfare 4 would avoid the large open combat structure of Guardians and instead build on the contained mission design of Dark Warfare III. Campaign missions are larger than those in the earliest Dark Warfare entries, but remain structured around focused objectives and controlled escalation. Players can disable generators, overload doors, cut security feeds, rescue optional prisoners, recover hidden files, and use environmental darkness to approach several encounters quietly before firefights begin.
Air Studios said the campaign systems were developed to support the tone of the Dark Warfare sub-series. In a June 12 developer overview, the studio described the campaign as focused on "pressure, evidence, and escalation" rather than large-scale battlefield freedom. The developer said that missions would include more optional information and reactive elements than earlier entries, while still following a directed narrative structure.

Multiplayer
Air Studios described the Zombies reveal as a continuation of the design approach used in Dark Warfare III rather than a reboot of the mode. The team said that Fractures were created to make maps feel unstable without replacing the traditional structure of round-based survival. After criticism from players who were concerned that Fractures could interfere with traditional high-round play and main-quest attempts, the team announced on September 12, 2018, that the system would include a setting allowing players to disable Fractures in Zombies.
Multiplayer returns as the competitive online mode of Dark Warfare 4. It includes custom classes, weapon progression, perks, equipment, scorestreaks, public playlists, private matches, competitive playlists, challenges, and seasonal progression.

Air Studios described Multiplayer as an evolution of Dark Warfare III rather than a direct continuation of the experimental competitive direction of Shadows or the historical structure of 1950. Standard core playlists use 6v6 matches, while larger playlists support selected 10v10 modes. The studio confirmed that traditional scorestreaks return, but objective score, support actions, and streak cycling have been adjusted to reduce the dominance of passive kill-only play.
For multiplayer, Air Studios said they wanted to keep the mode familiar after the divisive changes made to the multiplayer component of ShooterofIO: Shadows. The team described their approach as preserving core competitive readability while making smaller changes to objective scoring, mantle recovery, and scorestreak pacing.

The announcement confirmed that Multiplayer maps are built around dark urban combat spaces, black sites, industrial compounds, communication facilities, underground transit routes, and storm-damaged military infrastructure. Air Studios stated that the maps are designed to be smaller and more readable than the widest Guardians maps, while maintaining more vertical pressure and interior density than 1950. Several maps include power positions that can be challenged through flank routes, destructible shutters, alternate stairwells, and lower service paths.
On September 10, 2018, Air Studios released a one-hour-and-42-minute developer Q&A video about Dark Warfare 4. The Q&A featured members of the campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, audio, animation, and progression teams, and was framed as a follow-up to the June worldwide reveal, the August Zombies reveal, and the August multiplayer reveal. The team discussed the decision to keep the campaign mission-based rather than open-world, explaining that Field Evidence and reactive alarms were designed to add context and pressure without changing the series into a choice-driven role-playing game. They also addressed multiplayer, saying that the return of 6v6, custom classes, scorestreaks, and standard mini-map behavior was intended to make the mode immediately readable after the more divisive structure of Shadows, while Blacksite Streak Tuning was designed to give objective players more consistent score value without removing kill-based streak momentum. For Zombies, the team reiterated that "Gravenhurst" was built as a full round-based map and said that Fractures were meant to create temporary instability inside familiar map flow rather than replace doors, power, perks, Pack-a-Punch, or Wonder Weapon progression. The team also discussed feedback from Dark Warfare III, stating that they wanted Dark Warfare 4 to keep the sub-series' emphasis on atmosphere, secrets, and quest-driven Zombies while reducing the amount of menu layering around cooperative progression.

Class creation returns to a traditional structure built around a primary weapon, secondary weapon, lethal equipment, tactical equipment, perks, field equipment, and scorestreaks. Perks are divided into movement, awareness, survivability, stealth, and objective categories. Field equipment includes deployable cover, motion sensors, signal jammers, shock mines, trophy systems, and temporary blackout devices. The mini-map uses standard red-dot behavior for unsuppressed weapon fire in most public playlists, while several limited modes alter radar behavior to fit the game's darker intelligence-war theme.
The September 12 changes were announced after negative player feedback to the Q&A and beta schedule. Players criticized the beta for limiting the earliest access window too narrowly and questioned whether the open period gave enough time to test networking, balance, and playlist flow before launch. Mob Productions responded by changing the beta so that all pre-orders would receive access from September 21 through September 24, followed by an all-player open beta from September 28 through October 1. Air Studios also addressed Zombies feedback by confirming the Fractures setting, stating that the feature was intended to add variety and atmosphere but should not prevent players from pursuing a more traditional round-based experience.

Skill-based matchmaking remains present but follows the broader public-matchmaking approach used by Air Studios in Dark Warfare III. Public playlists prioritize connection quality, region, latency, party size, and playlist population before broader skill evaluation. Competitive playlists use stricter skill matching, visible divisions, restricted rules, and separate seasonal rewards.
On October 2, 2018, Air Studios published a beta wrap-up after the all-player open beta concluded. The team said the beta confirmed that the core 6v6 structure was closer to earlier Dark Warfare pacing than the multiplayer of Shadows, but they also identified several issues to address before release. The planned launch changes included revised spawns on smaller maps, reduced downtime between Breachline rounds, clearer radar timing in Blackout Control, increased score for objective captures and support actions, adjusted scorestreak requirements, faster recovery after mantling, and small changes to slide-to-fire timing. The team also said that feedback from the Zombies reveal had influenced the final implementation of the Fractures setting, with Fractures remaining enabled by default but available to disable before starting a Zombies match.

Zombies
Release
Zombies is the cooperative mode of Dark Warfare 4. It continues the round-based structure of previous Dark Warfare Zombies entries and supports solo play and cooperative squads. Players fight waves of undead enemies, open map areas, buy perks, use wall weapons and Mystery Box-style weapon sources, upgrade weapons, discover hidden story content, craft Wonder Weapons, and complete main quests.
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was announced on May 15, 2018. The announcement confirmed the title, developer, publisher, 2018 release window, supported platforms, and the return of Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. The initial announcement used a short teaser trailer and a publisher news post rather than a full gameplay reveal. On May 22, 2018, Air Studios released a follow-up teaser announcing that the game's worldwide reveal would take place on June 12, 2018. On June 1, 2018, Air Studios released the opening five seconds of the worldwide reveal trailer.

The announcement confirmed that the mode continues after the ending of Dark Warfare III, in which Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, and Nikolai Dawn recovered Edward Richtofen from Aetheris but learned that the dimension had retained pieces of their pasts. Air Studios stated that Dark Warfare 4 would explore what returned with Richtofen and whether the doors closed at the end of the previous game had truly sealed Aetheris away.
The worldwide reveal took place on June 12, 2018. It confirmed the worldwide release date of November 6, 2018, and included the first broader gameplay overview for the campaign. The same presentation gave limited information about multiplayer and Zombies, including confirmation of 6v6 multiplayer playlists and the name of the Zombies launch map, "Gravenhurst". On June 19, Air Studios confirmed that the dedicated Zombies reveal would take place sometime in August 2018. On July 10, Air Studios released a cinematic teaser for "Gravenhurst", confirming the full Zombies reveal for August 7.

The reveal confirmed two launch Zombies maps without fully detailing their quests. The first map, "Gravenhurst", is set in a European town that has been partially swallowed by a buried Aetheris fault beneath its streets. The second map, "The Meridian Vault", takes place in an underground storage facility containing artifacts recovered from earlier breaches. Air Studios described both maps as full round-based experiences with main quests, unique enemies, map-specific Wonder Weapons, side Easter eggs, and hidden radios.
The dedicated Zombies reveal was released on August 7, 2018. It focused on "Gravenhurst", confirmed the return of Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen, and outlined the mode's round-based structure, main quest, Wonder Weapon, perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, and Fractures. The multiplayer reveal was released on August 22, confirming 12 launch maps, returning modes, the new modes Breachline and Blackout Control, traditional custom classes, scorestreaks, standard mini-map behavior, and changes to objective score and movement recovery. The reveal also confirmed that a multiplayer beta would take place in September 2018.

The mode brings back perk machines, Pack-a-Punch-style weapon upgrading, traps, power switches, buildable quest items, hidden audio logs, and traditional high-round survival. Air Studios also teased a new system called Fractures, described as optional map events that temporarily shift sections of a Zombies map into unstable Aetheris space. Fractures can change enemy spawns, open temporary routes, reveal hidden quest objects, or create short high-risk reward windows.

Air Studios stated that GobbleGums and Weapon Kits would return in modified forms after their use in Dark Warfare III. GobbleGums remain consumable powers, while Weapon Kits allow players to progress Zombies weapons and equip attachments where supported. The studio said that both systems had been adjusted to reduce excessive early-match power and preserve map progression.
Dark Warfare 4 was released worldwide on November 6, 2018. The game launched with its campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the Zombies map "Gravenhurst". Mob Productions described the release as Air Studios' return to the main ShooterofIO schedule after Dark Warfare III and the first new Dark Warfare game in three years.

Synopsis
Post-launch
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is set after the events of Dark Warfare III. The Campaign follows Task Force Bravo as it investigates a series of reactivated black sites connected to the Havel Program, the Eidolon Directorate, and a newly revealed successor group known as the Meridian Directorate.
The first downloadable content pack, The Pale Door, was released on December 18, 2018. The pack added the Zombies map "Wulfsheim" and four multiplayer maps: "Black Chapel", "Underpass", "Drydock", and "Relay Point". It also added the multiplayer mode Signal Lock, in which teams fight over rotating transmission points that can be temporarily disabled by holding secondary terminals.

The Meridian Directorate is described as a covert network that survived by burying itself inside old emergency systems, private military contracts, and abandoned intelligence infrastructure. Unlike the Eidolon Directorate, which attempted to weaponize classified research through control and escalation, Meridian seeks to recover hidden sites before governments, rival factions, or Task Force Bravo can discover what was left behind.
The second downloadable content pack, Black Ice, was released on February 12, 2019. The pack added the Zombies map "Eisbruch" and four multiplayer maps: "Iceport", "Vault", "Redline", and "Substation North". It also added the multiplayer mode Cold Front, a territory-control mode in which active capture zones shift after timed weather events reduce visibility across parts of the map.

The Campaign begins with the disappearance of a rescue unit inside Site Kestrel, an underground communications facility that should no longer have power. Task Force Bravo's investigation reveals that several sealed installations have begun transmitting the same emergency phrase: "the dark line is active". The phrase leads the team through a chain of operations in which old Havel research, missing personnel, and private military forces converge around a buried command system believed to have been destroyed years earlier.
The third downloadable content pack, Red Static, was released on April 9, 2019. The pack added the Zombies map "Karthaus" and four multiplayer maps: "Broadcast", "Floodgate", "Iron Yard", and "Market Night". It also added the multiplayer mode Relay Sweep, in which teams move through a chain of active relay points while preventing the opposing team from reversing control progress.

The Zombies storyline follows Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen after Richtofen's return from Aetheris. Although the crew escaped the Glass Citadel in Dark Warfare III, the dimension retained echoes of their memories and began using those echoes to locate new doors into Earth. The first two announced maps place the crew in locations where Aetheris has started to overlap with real-world space again: a town built above a buried fault, and a vault containing objects that were never meant to be recovered.
The fourth downloadable content pack, The Last Door, was released on June 11, 2019. The pack added the final Zombies map, "The Last Door", and four multiplayer maps: "Citadel", "Signal End", "Aetherline", and "Bunker Nine". It also added the multiplayer mode End State, an objective mode in which teams fight to arm and defend a final relay after capturing preliminary sites around the map. Air Studios described the DLC as the conclusion of the game's main Zombies storyline.

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is being developed by Air Studios, marking the studio's first lead ShooterofIO game since Dark Warfare III. The game follows ShooterofIO: 1950, which was developed by War Games and received generally positive reviews after the mixed response to Guardians.

Air Studios stated that the game was designed as a direct continuation of the Dark Warfare identity rather than a reinvention of the sub-series. Director Nathan Crowe said, "Dark Warfare 4 is not us trying to prove that the sub-series can become something else. It is us asking what happens when everything the earlier games buried starts moving again."

Producer Elise Warren described the project as a response to the different directions taken by the previous two franchise entries. "Shadows took a real risk with systems and identity. 1950 restored a lot of readable fundamentals. For Dark Warfare 4, we are not trying to choose between those approaches. We are taking the clarity players responded to and putting it back into a darker, stranger, more hostile Air Studios world."
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 received generally positive reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Critics praised its atmosphere, Zombies mode, campaign presentation, and more familiar multiplayer structure, while criticism focused on conservative mission design, uneven enemy behavior, and several multiplayer maps that were considered less consistent than the strongest maps from Dark Warfare III.

The game uses the SOI Engine and was developed only for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Air Studios stated that the lack of last-generation versions allowed the team to increase environmental density, improve lighting transitions, expand Zombies maps, add more reactive mission scripting, and support larger animation sets for both human enemies and undead enemies.
IGN gave the game an 8.6/10, praising it as a confident continuation of the sub-series rather than a reinvention. The review highlighted "Gravenhurst" as the strongest launch component, describing Zombies as atmospheric and well-paced, and praised the Fractures setting for allowing players to choose between a more dynamic or traditional version of the map. The review criticized the campaign for returning to familiar black-site conspiracy ideas, but said its pacing and presentation made it one of the more polished campaigns in the series.

Lead designer Caleb Voss said that the team wanted Campaign missions to feel bigger without returning to the open combat design criticized in Guardians. "A mission can be larger without being loose. We want players to have alternate entries, optional intel, alarm states, and route choices, but the mission still needs a spine. The player should always feel the pressure of why they are there."
Game Informer gave the game an 8.75/10, praising Air Studios for refining the darker tone and round-based Zombies identity of the sub-series. The magazine praised the campaign's use of Field Evidence and reactive alarms, while noting that the choices mostly added context rather than changing the narrative. It also described multiplayer as a safer but more reliable offering than the competitive component of ShooterofIO: Shadows.

Writer Rachel Kerr said that the Campaign was built around the idea of systems that continue operating after the people who created them are gone. "The Havel Program and Eidolon left behind more than files. They left behind procedures, emergency orders, facilities, and people who were trained never to stop. Dark Warfare 4 is about what happens when a dead system starts following old instructions."
GameSpot gave the game an 8/10, praising its atmosphere and Zombies mode but criticizing its familiarity. The review said Dark Warfare 4 was stronger when leaning into horror, secrets, and map exploration than when relying on military conspiracy plotting. It praised the ability to disable Fractures as a good response to player feedback, but criticized several campaign encounters for using similar alarm-state objectives.

The decision to continue the Aetheris Zombies storyline was made early in development. Kerr said, "We did not want Richtofen's return to be a victory lap. He came back, but Aetheris came back with knowledge of everyone who entered it. That is a far more frightening place to begin than simply opening another portal."
Official Xbox Magazine gave the Xbox One version an 8.5/10, praising the return of traditional multiplayer systems and the launch Zombies map. The review praised the faster mantle recovery and objective score changes in multiplayer, but criticized Blackout Control for being less immediately readable than the returning modes. It also described "Gravenhurst" as one of the most complete launch Zombies maps in the series.

Zombies systems were developed to build from Dark Warfare III while avoiding excessive feature layering. Voss said, "With Dark Warfare III, players responded to strong maps, strong quests, and the feeling that the story mattered. For Dark Warfare 4, the first rule was not to bury that under menus. Fractures are there to make the map feel unstable, not to replace the map."
Fan response at launch was generally positive, especially among players who had preferred the structure of Dark Warfare III and wanted a more traditional competitive mode after Shadows. Early discussion focused heavily on "Gravenhurst", the optional Fractures setting, and whether the campaign's Field Evidence system added enough to repeated playthroughs. Multiplayer was viewed as more accessible than Shadows, though some players criticized the launch weapon balance and the pacing of Blackout Control.

Air Studios described Fractures as the main new Zombies feature at announcement. Designer Miriam Hale said, "A Fracture is a moment where the map lies to you. The street becomes a hallway from somewhere else. A locked room appears for one minute. A radio plays a memory that should not exist. Mechanically, it creates risk and reward. Narratively, it reminds players that Aetheris is not gone."
The post-launch Zombies maps were generally well received by players, with "Wulfsheim" and "The Last Door" receiving particular attention for their atmosphere and story progression. Some criticism continued to focus on the multiplayer side of the downloadable content, with reviewers and players describing several added maps as visually strong but less consistent in competitive flow than the base game's better maps.

The Multiplayer team stated that it had studied the response to Shadows and 1950 before deciding how much to change. Voss said, "Players do not reject new ideas automatically. They reject confusion, especially in public matches. Our goal is to keep the foundation legible: 6v6, classes, streaks, objectives, map control. The new work happens inside that foundation, not instead of it."

Air Studios also emphasized that Dark Warfare 4 was not intended to erase the design lessons of earlier franchise entries. Crowe said, "Every game taught us something. Guardians taught us that scale needs discipline. Shadows taught us that theme cannot come at the cost of instant readability. 1950 reminded everyone that fundamentals matter. Dark Warfare 4 is built with all of that in mind, but it still has to feel like a game only Air Studios would make."

Marketing and release
ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was announced on May 15, 2018, through a cinematic announcement trailer, a publisher blog post, and a developer message from Air Studios. The announcement confirmed Air Studios as lead developer, Mob Productions as publisher, a 2018 release window, the return of Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies, and the platform lineup of Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The announcement trailer opened with a black screen and a distorted emergency transmission repeating the phrase "the dark line is active". It then showed Task Force Bravo entering a flooded underground facility, a soldier discovering a room filled with sealed body bags and still-running tape machines, and a city street losing power as a hidden antenna rose from beneath the pavement. The trailer also briefly showed Zombies footage, including Noah Mad standing in an empty town square as buildings shifted into Aetheris architecture behind him.

The reveal emphasized the return of Air Studios and the continuation of the Dark Warfare sub-series after two franchise entries led by other studios. Mob Productions described the game as a major 2018 release and stated that more details on Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies would be shared across dedicated reveals later in the year.

Early coverage focused on the return of round-based Zombies and the decision to directly continue the Aetheris storyline from Dark Warfare III. Several outlets praised the announcement for restoring the franchise's darker horror-covert identity after the historical direction of 1950, while others noted that Air Studios would face high expectations after the strong reception of Dark Warfare III.

Game Frontier described the reveal as "the safest exciting announcement Mob Productions could have made", arguing that the franchise was returning to one of its most reliable identities while still leaving room for Campaign and Zombies escalation. Previewers reacted positively to the announcement of Fractures in Zombies and the return to a traditional Multiplayer foundation, but remained cautious about whether the Campaign would be able to distinguish the Meridian Directorate from earlier black-site conspiracies in the sub-series.

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is a 2018 first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the fourth main entry in the Dark Warfare sub-series and a main installment in the ShooterofIO series, following ShooterofIO: 1950 (2017). The game was announced on May 15, 2018, and released on November 6, 2018, for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[1][2]

The game includes a single-player campaign, a competitive multiplayer component, and Zombies.[3] Its worldwide reveal on June 12, 2018, confirmed the release date and detailed several campaign systems, while later presentations focused on Zombies and multiplayer.[4][5][6] The game received four downloadable content packs: The Pale Door, Black Ice, Red Static, and The Last Door.[7][8][9][10]

Dark Warfare 4 received generally positive reviews, with praise for its Zombies mode, atmosphere, campaign presentation, and return to a more familiar multiplayer structure, while criticism was directed at its conservative campaign design and some uneven multiplayer maps.[11][12]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is a first-person shooter game.[2] It comprises three main game modes: a single-player campaign mode; a competitive multiplayer component; and the cooperative Zombies mode.[3] The campaign includes reactive alarm states, optional intelligence recovery, alternate entry routes, and a Field Evidence system used to collect files, recordings, photographs, and physical objects for additional story context.[13][14]

The multiplayer mode features 12 core 6v6 maps at launch, accompanied by returning modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, Capture the Flag, and Secure Line.[6] New modes include Breachline, in which teams fight to open and defend sequential access points across a map, and Blackout Control, a variant built around temporary radar disruption and objective capture.[15] The game uses traditional custom classes, perks, scorestreaks, weapon progression, standard mini-map behavior in most public modes, and Blacksite Streak Tuning, which gives additional score value to objective play and support actions without replacing scorestreaks.[6] Movement changes include faster mantle recovery and smoother slide-to-fire timing compared with ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III.[6]

Zombies is a round-based cooperative survival mode centered on the launch map "Gravenhurst", which is set in a European town affected by an unstable Aetheris breach.[5][16] The mode includes perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, main quests, traps, hidden radios, and high-round survival.[5] A new system called Fractures temporarily changes parts of a map by altering enemy spawns, opening short-lived routes, or revealing quest objects; players can disable Fractures before starting a Zombies match.[17][18]

Plot[edit | edit source]

Zombies[edit | edit source]

No.TitleOriginal air date
1"Gravenhurst"November 6, 2018 (2018-11-06)
Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen travel to Gravenhurst, a European town where buildings, streets, and memories have begun overlapping with Aetheris.
2"Wulfsheim"December 18, 2018 (2018-12-18)
The crew follow the signal from Gravenhurst to Wulfsheim, a mountain village built around a sealed chapel and an abandoned recovery station used after the first Aetheris breaches.
3"Eisbruch"February 12, 2019 (2019-02-12)
The crew travel to Eisbruch, a frozen research port where the Havel Program shipped recovered Aetheris material through civilian cover routes.
4"Karthaus"April 9, 2019 (2019-04-09)
The map recovered at Eisbruch leads the crew to Karthaus, a ruined monastery converted into a signal archive after the earliest Aetheris incidents.
5"The Last Door"June 11, 2019 (2019-06-11)
Noah, Sarah, Nikolai, and Richtofen reach the final relay, a fortress-like station constructed around the original doorway into Aetheris.

Development[edit | edit source]

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), and ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015).[19] The game was published by Mob Productions and uses the SOI Engine.[1]

The game continued the franchise's current-generation platform approach, with versions released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[20] No PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U versions were announced.[20]

Air Studios said the campaign systems were developed to support the tone of the Dark Warfare sub-series.[13] In a June 12 developer overview, the studio described the campaign as focused on "pressure, evidence, and escalation" rather than large-scale battlefield freedom.[13] The developer said that missions would include more optional information and reactive elements than earlier entries, while still following a directed narrative structure.[14]

Air Studios described the Zombies reveal as a continuation of the design approach used in Dark Warfare III rather than a reboot of the mode.[5] The team said that Fractures were created to make maps feel unstable without replacing the traditional structure of round-based survival.[17] After criticism from players who were concerned that Fractures could interfere with traditional high-round play and main-quest attempts, the team announced on September 12, 2018, that the system would include a setting allowing players to disable Fractures in Zombies.[18]

For multiplayer, Air Studios said they wanted to keep the mode familiar after the divisive changes made to the multiplayer component of ShooterofIO: Shadows.[6] The team described their approach as preserving core competitive readability while making smaller changes to objective scoring, mantle recovery, and scorestreak pacing.[6]

On September 10, 2018, Air Studios released a one-hour-and-42-minute developer Q&A video about Dark Warfare 4.[21] The Q&A featured members of the campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, audio, animation, and progression teams, and was framed as a follow-up to the June worldwide reveal, the August Zombies reveal, and the August multiplayer reveal. The team also discussed feedback from Dark Warfare III, stating that they wanted Dark Warfare 4 to keep the sub-series' emphasis on atmosphere, secrets, and quest-driven Zombies while reducing the amount of menu layering around cooperative progression.[21]

The September 12 changes were announced after negative player feedback to the Q&A and beta schedule.[22] Players criticized the beta for limiting the earliest access window too narrowly and questioned whether the open period gave enough time to test networking, balance, and playlist flow before launch. Mob Productions responded by changing the beta so that all pre-orders would receive access from September 21 through September 24, followed by an all-player open beta from September 28 through October 1.[22] Air Studios also addressed Zombies feedback by confirming the Fractures setting, stating that the feature was intended to add variety and atmosphere but should not prevent players from pursuing a more traditional round-based experience.[18]

On October 2, 2018, Air Studios published a beta wrap-up after the all-player open beta concluded.[23] The team said the beta confirmed that the core 6v6 structure was closer to earlier Dark Warfare pacing than the multiplayer of Shadows, but they also identified several issues to address before release. The team also said that feedback from the Zombies reveal had influenced the final implementation of the Fractures setting, with Fractures remaining enabled by default but available to disable before starting a Zombies match.[23]

Release[edit | edit source]

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was announced on May 15, 2018.[1] The announcement confirmed the title, developer, publisher, 2018 release window, supported platforms, and the return of Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.[1][3] The initial announcement used a short teaser trailer and a publisher news post rather than a full gameplay reveal.[24] On May 22, 2018, Air Studios released a follow-up teaser announcing that the game's worldwide reveal would take place on June 12, 2018.[25] On June 1, 2018, Air Studios released the opening five seconds of the worldwide reveal trailer.[26]

The worldwide reveal took place on June 12, 2018.[4] It confirmed the worldwide release date of November 6, 2018, and included the first broader gameplay overview for the campaign.[4][13] The same presentation gave limited information about multiplayer and Zombies, including confirmation of 6v6 multiplayer playlists and the name of the Zombies launch map, "Gravenhurst".[27][28] On June 19, Air Studios confirmed that the dedicated Zombies reveal would take place sometime in August 2018.[29] On July 10, Air Studios released a cinematic teaser for "Gravenhurst", confirming the full Zombies reveal for August 7.[30]

The dedicated Zombies reveal was released on August 7, 2018.[5] It focused on "Gravenhurst", confirmed the return of Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen, and outlined the mode's round-based structure, main quest, Wonder Weapon, perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, and Fractures.[5][31][17] The multiplayer reveal was released on August 22, confirming 12 launch maps, returning modes, the new modes Breachline and Blackout Control, traditional custom classes, scorestreaks, standard mini-map behavior, and changes to objective score and movement recovery.[6][15] The reveal also confirmed that a multiplayer beta would take place in September 2018.[32]

On September 10, 2018, Air Studios released a developer Q&A video and Mob Productions confirmed the beta schedule.[21][33] The initial beta schedule was criticized by players for its limited early access structure.[34] On September 12, Mob Productions changed the schedule so that all pre-orders would receive beta access from September 21 through September 24, while all players would receive access regardless of pre-order status from September 28 through October 1.[22] On the same day, Air Studios announced that Fractures would be optional in Zombies.[18] The multiplayer beta ran under the revised schedule, and Air Studios published a beta wrap-up on October 2, listing planned launch adjustments for spawn logic, objective score, streak pacing, movement recovery, Blackout Control readability, and the Fractures setting.[23]

Dark Warfare 4 was released worldwide on November 6, 2018.[2] The game launched with its campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the Zombies map "Gravenhurst".[2] Mob Productions described the release as Air Studios' return to the main ShooterofIO schedule after Dark Warfare III and the first new Dark Warfare game in three years.[2]

Post-launch[edit | edit source]

The first downloadable content pack, The Pale Door, was released on December 18, 2018.[7] The pack added the Zombies map "Wulfsheim" and four multiplayer maps: "Black Chapel", "Underpass", "Drydock", and "Relay Point".[35] It also added the multiplayer mode Signal Lock, in which teams fight over rotating transmission points that can be temporarily disabled by holding secondary terminals.[36]

The second downloadable content pack, Black Ice, was released on February 12, 2019.[8] The pack added the Zombies map "Eisbruch" and four multiplayer maps: "Iceport", "Vault", "Redline", and "Substation North".[37] It also added the multiplayer mode Cold Front, a territory-control mode in which active capture zones shift after timed weather events reduce visibility across parts of the map.[38]

The third downloadable content pack, Red Static, was released on April 9, 2019.[9] The pack added the Zombies map "Karthaus" and four multiplayer maps: "Broadcast", "Floodgate", "Iron Yard", and "Market Night".[39] It also added the multiplayer mode Relay Sweep, in which teams move through a chain of active relay points while preventing the opposing team from reversing control progress.[40]

The fourth downloadable content pack, The Last Door, was released on June 11, 2019.[10] The pack added the final Zombies map, "The Last Door", and four multiplayer maps: "Citadel", "Signal End", "Aetherline", and "Bunker Nine".[41] It also added the multiplayer mode End State, an objective mode in which teams fight to arm and defend a final relay after capturing preliminary sites around the map.[42] Air Studios described the DLC as the conclusion of the game's main Zombies storyline.[10]

Reception[edit | edit source]

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 received generally positive reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[11][43][44] Critics praised its atmosphere, Zombies mode, campaign presentation, and more familiar multiplayer structure, while criticism focused on conservative mission design, uneven enemy behavior, and several multiplayer maps that were considered less consistent than the strongest maps from Dark Warfare III.[12][46]

IGN gave the game an 8.6/10, praising it as a confident continuation of the sub-series rather than a reinvention.[12] The review highlighted "Gravenhurst" as the strongest launch component, describing Zombies as atmospheric and well-paced, and praised the Fractures setting for allowing players to choose between a more dynamic or traditional version of the map. The review criticized the campaign for returning to familiar black-site conspiracy ideas, but said its pacing and presentation made it one of the more polished campaigns in the series.[12]

Game Informer gave the game an 8.75/10, praising Air Studios for refining the darker tone and round-based Zombies identity of the sub-series.[45] The magazine praised the campaign's use of Field Evidence and reactive alarms, while noting that the choices mostly added context rather than changing the narrative. It also described multiplayer as a safer but more reliable offering than the competitive component of ShooterofIO: Shadows.[45]

GameSpot gave the game an 8/10, praising its atmosphere and Zombies mode but criticizing its familiarity.[46] The review said Dark Warfare 4 was stronger when leaning into horror, secrets, and map exploration than when relying on military conspiracy plotting. It praised the ability to disable Fractures as a good response to player feedback, but criticized several campaign encounters for using similar alarm-state objectives.[46]

Official Xbox Magazine gave the Xbox One version an 8.5/10, praising the return of traditional multiplayer systems and the launch Zombies map.[47] The review praised the faster mantle recovery and objective score changes in multiplayer, but criticized Blackout Control for being less immediately readable than the returning modes. It also described "Gravenhurst" as one of the most complete launch Zombies maps in the series.[47]

Fan response at launch was generally positive, especially among players who had preferred the structure of Dark Warfare III and wanted a more traditional competitive mode after Shadows.[48] Early discussion focused heavily on "Gravenhurst", the optional Fractures setting, and whether the campaign's Field Evidence system added enough to repeated playthroughs. Multiplayer was viewed as more accessible than Shadows, though some players criticized the launch weapon balance and the pacing of Blackout Control.[48]

The post-launch Zombies maps were generally well received by players, with "Wulfsheim" and "The Last Door" receiving particular attention for their atmosphere and story progression.[49] Some criticism continued to focus on the multiplayer side of the downloadable content, with reviewers and players describing several added maps as visually strong but less consistent in competitive flow than the base game's better maps.[49]
