Similar to its predecessor, in ''Wargrounds 2.0''<nowiki/>'s primary game mode, Battle Royale, players compete in a continuously shrinking map to be the last player(s) remaining. Players parachute onto a large game map, where they encounter and eliminate other players. Players start with 150 health with two armor plates attached for an additional 100 health. As the game progresses and players are eliminated, the playable area shrinks, forcing the remaining players into tighter spaces. A new feature in Wargrounds 2.0, Circle Collapse, allows multiple circles to spawn within the map, which close independently of one another, before converging into one single safe zone. Like ''Wargrounds'' (2020), upon death, players are sent to the "Gulag", a small-sized arena where killed players battle one another for a chance at respawning into the map. In Wargrounds 2.0, Gulag matches were initially introduced in 2v2 format, and included an artificial intelligence (AI) combatant called "the Jailer", whom players can hunt down to acquire a key and escape, in addition to the traditional method of winning Gulag matches. This change was reverted for Season 2 to the original 1v1 format, while the Jailer is also removed in favor of the overtime point capture system. In-game cash currencies also return, allowing players to buy various items at several buy stations scattered across the map, including custom loadouts with personalized weapons and perk setups. ''Wargrounds 2.0'' features many vehicles such as the ATV, cargo truck, Hatchback, SUV and many more.

During the match, events can happen throughout the game. There are three different types of events: Jailbreak (every player in the gulag is redeployed into the map and back into the game); Fire Sale (items in the buy station are discounted up to 100% for one minute); and Restock (supply boxes are refilled and can be opened again). Only one of these events can happen in a single game.
== Gameplay ==
''ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0'' is a large-scale multiplayer game played on an expanded version of the open-world region used in the campaign of ''Modern Ops''.<ref name="FirstDetails" /> Players deploy in squads, collect weapons and equipment, complete objectives, fight enemy players, and attempt to extract before being eliminated. The game uses weapons, movement systems, vehicles, and locations from ''Modern Ops'', including tactical sprint, weapon mounting, door interaction, field upgrades, and the Gunsmith weapon-customization system.<ref name="Systems" /> Compatible content from ''Dark Warfare 5'' was added on December 10, 2020, including weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, and themed content, although weapon values and movement tuning are balanced separately for ''Wargrounds 2.0''.<ref name="DarkWarfareSeasonOne" /><ref name="SeasonOneWargrounds" /> Compatible content from ''Iron Front'' is planned to be added during that game's post-launch period.<ref name="IronFrontIntegration" />

A new extraction game mode, named DMZ, is also featured at the release of ''Wargrounds 2.0''. In DMZ, players battle against both AI-controlled and player-controlled opponents while attempting to exfil with loot they found within the playable area (also known as the Exclusion Zone). Players start out with a limited inventory, which allows storage of extracted loot from matches; said inventory can be expanded by completing Faction missions, allowing for more guaranteed loadout weapon slots or the opportunity to unlock base weapons and cosmetic rewards, usable in both Wargrounds 2.0 and ''Modern Ops II''.
Standard Wargrounds matches take place across districts containing loot, contracts, extraction points, vehicles, enemy patrols, and player-controlled squads.<ref name="Systems" /> Objectives include reconnaissance, sabotage, supply recovery, bounty hunting, and area control, with completed activities awarding equipment, match currency, and progression. Players can choose to avoid combat, pursue objectives, ambush other squads, or extract early with collected rewards. The game features persistent loadout progression tied to its parent titles, while equipment found during a match can be lost if a squad is eliminated before extraction.<ref name="Systems" />

At launch, AI combatants were a prominent feature in Wargrounds 2.0, as they defended various strongholds and black sites throughout the main map, in both Battle Royale and DMZ. Players were able to engage in combat with the AI-controlled enemies in order to seize the strongholds and gain access to the loot items within. Following numerous balancing updates and changes, AI combatants were completely removed from Battle Royale modes in ''Modern Ops II'' Season 4.
Battle Royale is a separate playlist in ''Wargrounds 2.0''.<ref name="BattleRoyale" /> The mode places squads into the Al Mazara region without the extraction objective, requiring them to scavenge equipment, use vehicles, complete optional contracts, and survive against other squads until one squad remains. The playlist uses the same weapons, movement, map spaces, and progression links as the wider ''Wargrounds 2.0'' game, while focusing on elimination survival rather than extracting with collected rewards.<ref name="BattleRoyale" />

In ''Modern Ops II'' Season 2, Wargrounds 2.0 featured the return of Resurgence, a game mode in which player combatants can respawn and rejoin matches after being killed, provided that at least one member in their squad remains alive following a short cooldown period. Squad members can help reduce the cooldown period by completing contracts or killing other players.
Zombies Operations is an extraction-style mode added with the ''Dark Warfare 5'' Season 1 integration.<ref name="SeasonOneWargrounds" /> Squads enter infected areas of the map, fight undead enemies, collect intelligence, complete occult and military objectives, recover resources, and extract before being overwhelmed. The mode uses compatible ''Dark Warfare 5'' Zombies systems, including Salvage, armor, weapon rarity, enemy escalation, and objective events, but adapts them to the larger ''Wargrounds 2.0'' map structure and extraction rules.<ref name="SeasonOneWargrounds" />

''Modern Ops II'' Season 3 reintroduced the game mode Plunder, in which teams have to search for stacks of Cash scattered around the map to accumulate $2 million. Once found or if time is almost up, the game goes into overtime, multiplying all Cash sums twice. The team who has gathered the most money when the clock runs out is declared the winner. Players respawn automatically in this game mode. In addition, for the first time, a Ranked competitive mode was introduced in ''Wargrounds'', developed in partnership with Treyarch using the official Call of Duty League ruleset.
== Development ==
''Wargrounds 2.0'' was developed by SOI Studios alongside ''Modern Ops''.<ref name="Announcement" /> The game was described as a post-launch extension of the parent title rather than a separate mainline entry in the ''ShooterofIO'' series.<ref name="PostLaunch" /> Mob Productions first announced it without detailed gameplay information on April 10, 2019, stating only that it would release after ''Modern Ops''.<ref name="Announcement" /> During the June 10 worldwide reveal, the publisher said that the game was being built from the same technology and world systems as the open-world campaign, including its larger Al Mazara region, vehicles, traversal systems, and mission structure.<ref name="FirstDetails" />

At launch, Unhinged was introduced. Unhinged was a limited-time game mode in ''Wargrounds 2.0'' where teams can request enemy players to join their squad. Once all the players have accepted, a new HUD will be shown on their screen, showing their new teammates and all the allies can be declared winner if they are the last team standing. Six players is the max that can be part of the squad. Unhinged was removed following the arrival of the Season 01 Reloaded patch.
On August 5, 2019, SOI Studios published additional information about the game's design and its relationship to ''Modern Ops''.<ref name="Systems" /> The studio described ''Wargrounds 2.0'' as a way to reuse the campaign's open-world technology in a multiplayer setting without turning the main campaign into an online-only experience. The team said the game was designed around squad decision-making, risk, extraction, and player encounters rather than a fixed match objective, with contracts and extraction points used to create smaller goals across the map. SOI Studios also said that the game would share progression with ''Modern Ops'' multiplayer, allowing weapons and loadouts to remain part of the wider game economy while still giving ''Wargrounds 2.0'' its own match structure.<ref name="Systems" />

Wargrounds Bootcamp is a training mode featured in the video game ''ShooterofIO: Modern Ops III,'' which was introduced during the game's third season. this mode was created to help players familiarize themselves with the gameplay mechanics and controls of ''Wargrounds 2.0''. It takes place on the Urzikstan map. There are a total of 44 players in this game mode, 24 of them being bots.
On March 20, 2020, Mob Productions announced that ''Wargrounds 2.0'' would be integrated with ''Dark Warfare 5'' in late 2020.<ref name="DarkWarfareIntegration">{{cite web |author=Mob Productions |date=March 20, 2020 |title=Dark Warfare 5 and Wargrounds 2.0 Integration Announced |url=https://www.mobproductions.example/news/dark-warfare-5-wargrounds-2-0-integration |website=Mob Productions |access-date=March 10, 2021}}</ref> In a June 18 interview, Air Studios said the integration had mainly affected development through early technical standards, as weapons, Operators, cosmetics, movement systems, progression items, and other compatible content had to be built so that they could work in ''Wargrounds 2.0''.<ref name="AirInterview">{{cite web |author=GameWire staff |date=June 18, 2020 |title=Air Studios Talks Dark Warfare 5, Wargrounds 2.0, and Rebuilding Zombies |url=https://www.gamewire.example/interviews/air-studios-dark-warfare-5-interview |website=GameWire |access-date=March 10, 2021}}</ref> When the integration launched on December 10, 2020, Air Studios became credited as a developer of ''Wargrounds 2.0'' alongside SOI Studios.<ref name="SeasonOneWargrounds" />

=== Seasonal changes ===
Mob Productions announced a future integration with ''Iron Front'' on March 10, 2021.<ref name="IronFrontIntegration" /> The announcement confirmed that ''Wargrounds 2.0'' would continue as the franchise's cross-title free-to-play game after the ''Dark Warfare 5'' cycle, with War Games' World War II-based title planned to add compatible content during post-launch. In 2021, it was leaked that a battle royale video game was being developed for the ''ShooterofIO'' series. Monsteristic pubically denied these claims and said they have no information to share regarding any game featuring battle royale but said players should definitely "stay tuned". In a interview in mid-2021, Monsteristic stated that if they release a battle royale game, it will need to be reworked "from the ground up" to be updated alongside the annual premium releases. By early 2022, Monsteristic announced that they are working with SOI Studios to release a successor to the [[ShooterofIO: Wargrounds|2007 game ''Wargrounds'']].

ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a 2019 free-to-play first-person shooter game developed by SOI Studios and Air Studios, and published by Mob Productions for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as part of the ShooterofIO video game series.[1][2] It was introduced as part of 2019's ShooterofIO: Modern Ops and was later integrated with 2020's ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 during that game's first season.[3][4] Wargrounds 2.0 itself is free to download and does not require purchase of either parent title, although owners of Modern Ops received access before its wider free-to-play launch.[5][6] The game features cross-platform progression links with its parent titles and includes extraction-based squad play, a Battle Royale mode, and Zombies Operations, an extraction-style mode based on Dark Warfare 5 Zombies content.[7][8][9]

Wargrounds 2.0 was announced by Mob Productions on April 10, 2019, and was detailed further during the worldwide reveal for Modern Ops on June 10.[10][3] Its promotional artwork was released on September 1, 2019, when Battle Royale was also revealed.[11][8] The game opened to owners of Modern Ops on December 3, 2019, before becoming free to play on December 10 with the start of Modern Ops Season 1.[6][2] On December 10, 2020, Air Studios was added as a developer alongside SOI Studios when the Dark Warfare 5 integration and Zombies Operations mode were released.[9] On March 10, 2021, Mob Productions announced that Wargrounds 2.0 would also integrate with War Games' World War II-based title ShooterofIO: Iron Front during that game's post-launch content cycle.[12]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a large-scale multiplayer game played on an expanded version of the open-world region used in the campaign of Modern Ops.[3] Players deploy in squads, collect weapons and equipment, complete objectives, fight enemy players, and attempt to extract before being eliminated. The game uses weapons, movement systems, vehicles, and locations from Modern Ops, including tactical sprint, weapon mounting, door interaction, field upgrades, and the Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[7] Compatible content from Dark Warfare 5 was added on December 10, 2020, including weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, and themed content, although weapon values and movement tuning are balanced separately for Wargrounds 2.0.[4][9] Compatible content from Iron Front is planned to be added during that game's post-launch period.[12]

Standard Wargrounds matches take place across districts containing loot, contracts, extraction points, vehicles, enemy patrols, and player-controlled squads.[7] Objectives include reconnaissance, sabotage, supply recovery, bounty hunting, and area control, with completed activities awarding equipment, match currency, and progression. Players can choose to avoid combat, pursue objectives, ambush other squads, or extract early with collected rewards. The game features persistent loadout progression tied to its parent titles, while equipment found during a match can be lost if a squad is eliminated before extraction.[7]

Battle Royale is a separate playlist in Wargrounds 2.0.[8] The mode places squads into the Al Mazara region without the extraction objective, requiring them to scavenge equipment, use vehicles, complete optional contracts, and survive against other squads until one squad remains. The playlist uses the same weapons, movement, map spaces, and progression links as the wider Wargrounds 2.0 game, while focusing on elimination survival rather than extracting with collected rewards.[8]

Zombies Operations is an extraction-style mode added with the Dark Warfare 5 Season 1 integration.[9] Squads enter infected areas of the map, fight undead enemies, collect intelligence, complete occult and military objectives, recover resources, and extract before being overwhelmed. The mode uses compatible Dark Warfare 5 Zombies systems, including Salvage, armor, weapon rarity, enemy escalation, and objective events, but adapts them to the larger Wargrounds 2.0 map structure and extraction rules.[9]

Development[edit | edit source]

Wargrounds 2.0 was developed by SOI Studios alongside Modern Ops.[10] The game was described as a post-launch extension of the parent title rather than a separate mainline entry in the ShooterofIO series.[1] Mob Productions first announced it without detailed gameplay information on April 10, 2019, stating only that it would release after Modern Ops.[10] During the June 10 worldwide reveal, the publisher said that the game was being built from the same technology and world systems as the open-world campaign, including its larger Al Mazara region, vehicles, traversal systems, and mission structure.[3]

On August 5, 2019, SOI Studios published additional information about the game's design and its relationship to Modern Ops.[7] The studio described Wargrounds 2.0 as a way to reuse the campaign's open-world technology in a multiplayer setting without turning the main campaign into an online-only experience. The team said the game was designed around squad decision-making, risk, extraction, and player encounters rather than a fixed match objective, with contracts and extraction points used to create smaller goals across the map. SOI Studios also said that the game would share progression with Modern Ops multiplayer, allowing weapons and loadouts to remain part of the wider game economy while still giving Wargrounds 2.0 its own match structure.[7]

On March 20, 2020, Mob Productions announced that Wargrounds 2.0 would be integrated with Dark Warfare 5 in late 2020.[13] In a June 18 interview, Air Studios said the integration had mainly affected development through early technical standards, as weapons, Operators, cosmetics, movement systems, progression items, and other compatible content had to be built so that they could work in Wargrounds 2.0.[14] When the integration launched on December 10, 2020, Air Studios became credited as a developer of Wargrounds 2.0 alongside SOI Studios.[9]

Mob Productions announced a future integration with Iron Front on March 10, 2021.[12] The announcement confirmed that Wargrounds 2.0 would continue as the franchise's cross-title free-to-play game after the Dark Warfare 5 cycle, with War Games' World War II-based title planned to add compatible content during post-launch. Details about the exact weapons, modes, map changes, progression items, and seasonal schedule for the Iron Front integration were not included in the announcement.[12]

Release[edit | edit source]

Wargrounds 2.0 was announced on April 10, 2019, alongside new information about Modern Ops.[10] First gameplay details were released during the June 10 worldwide reveal for Modern Ops, where the game was presented as a post-launch experience connected to the campaign map.[3] On August 2, 2019, Mob Productions confirmed that it would be released alongside the start of the first season of free post-launch content for Modern Ops.[1] On October 16, the publisher announced that access would open on December 3 for players who owned Modern Ops, while the game would become free to play on December 10 alongside Season 1.[5] Access opened for owners of Modern Ops on December 3, 2019, one week before the game became free to play on December 10.[6][2]

The planned Dark Warfare 5 integration was announced on March 20, 2020, with the integration scheduled for late 2020.[13] On November 13, Mob Productions confirmed that the integration would begin on December 10 alongside Season 1 of Dark Warfare 5.[4] The update was released on December 10, adding Dark Warfare 5 weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, themed content, and the Zombies Operations mode to Wargrounds 2.0.[9] On March 10, 2021, Mob Productions announced that Iron Front would also integrate with Wargrounds 2.0 during post-launch.[12]

Post-launch[edit | edit source]

The Dark Warfare 5 integration launched for Wargrounds 2.0 on December 10, 2020, alongside Season 1 of the premium game.[9] The update added compatible Dark Warfare 5 weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, themed rewards, balance changes, and Zombies Operations, while Air Studios became credited as a developer of Wargrounds 2.0 alongside SOI Studios.[9] Zombies Operations adapted Dark Warfare 5 Zombies systems into a larger extraction format, with squads entering infected zones, completing objectives, collecting resources and intelligence, fighting undead enemies, and extracting before the match escalated.[9]

Season 2 of the Dark Warfare 5 integration began on February 11, 2021, and expanded Wargrounds 2.0 with new weapons, Operators, progression rewards, Zombies Operations contracts, and Battle Royale balance changes.[15] The update added infected bunkers to the map, expanded undead enemy patrols in Zombies Operations, and introduced objective chains based around recovering Havel Program research materials.[15]
