The fourth season of the American superhero television series The Flash, based on the Barry Allen incarnation of the Flash from DC Comics, consists of 13 episodes.

The season is divided into two parts. The first part consists of five episodes, while the second consists of eight episodes.

An alternate-universe Barry Allen and Iris West are pulled into Central City as temporal distortions cause different periods of the city's history to overlap. Barry, Wally and Cisco encounter Edward Clariss, a speedster known as the Rival who originated from the timeline Barry erased after reversing Merrick Wren's exposure of his identity. Clariss reveals that the altered timeline erased his wife and son, while Cisco discovers that the Time Trapper restored Clariss and his powers. During Founders Night, Clariss fractures the plaza across several time periods and attempts to kill both versions of Iris. Barry intervenes and redirects Clariss's momentum, unintentionally killing him. Barry voluntarily surrenders while Cisco determines that the other actions Barry could have taken would also have resulted in a death. Barry is subsequently charged with second-degree murder and ordered to surrender his Flash equipment except during emergencies. The Time Trapper then declares Clariss's death the beginning of an "accounting" for Barry's alterations to time.

Barry pleads not guilty to second-degree murder as his trial begins, while Wally, Cisco and the alternate Barry respond to temporal distortions spreading across Central City. Testimony from both versions of Iris and the alternate Barry establishes that Clariss posed an immediate threat, although none can determine whether Barry had another safe option. Cisco later identifies one possible sequence in which everyone survives, but cannot establish whether Barry could have known to make that choice. The Time Trapper subsequently causes the courthouse to overlap with several periods of its history, forcing Judge Cole to temporarily authorize Barry's return as the Flash. Barry, Wally, Cisco and the alternate Barry evacuate the building before Barry confronts the Time Trapper, who continues blaming him for the consequences of his alterations to time. The Time Trapper later freezes Central City and gives Barry twenty-four hours for the trial to reach a verdict, warning that he will impose his own judgment if it does not.

As Barry's trial continues, Cisco testifies that although later simulations reveal several ways Clariss could have survived, a temporal compression limited the options Barry could perceive during the attack. Iris and the alternate Iris uncover evidence confirming that Clariss's erased wife and son existed, while Cisco discovers that the Time Trapper deliberately preserved Clariss after Barry altered history. Barry takes the stand, admitting that he killed Clariss but maintains that he intended only to prevent him from killing the two Irises. As temporal incursions spread across Central City, Barry, Wally, Cisco and the alternate Barry temporarily displace the Time Trapper, who reveals that he prevented the breach between their universes from closing and shortens his deadline in retaliation. The jury subsequently reaches a verdict, but before it can be announced, the Time Trapper transports the courthouse and everyone inside to Central City in 2166, demanding that the verdict be delivered there.

The jury acquits Barry of both second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter before the Time Trapper reveals that the courthouse has been transported to Central City in 2166. There, Dr. Lyra Mercer explains that five periods in the city's history are connected to an event known as the Split, in which two universes attempt to occupy the same temporal coordinates. Meanwhile, Wally, the alternate Barry and the alternate Iris investigate devices linking the five periods and initially disable several of them, only to discover that the devices are anchors preventing the timelines from separating. The Time Trapper reveals that Clariss's death is the fifth point and intends to use it to separate the two universes. After the anchors fail, the group is scattered across different periods of Central City's history. Barry is returned to Founders Plaza moments before Clariss's death, where the Time Trapper offers him the opportunity to change the event while warning that one universe must surrender its claim to history.

Barry refuses the Time Trapper's offer to prevent Clariss's death, accepting that changing the event would erase the consequences and choices that followed it. Cisco devises a plan to stabilize Central City's five temporal points using the natural rhythms of each era, with Wally restoring 1894, Eddie synchronizing the Mercury power grid in 1936, Cisco stabilizing 2026 and the alternate Barry securing 2166. A temporal echo of Clariss subsequently stabilizes the fifth point after asking Barry to remember his erased family. When the two universes begin collapsing together, Cisco uses Eddie's chronal pattern as a template while both Barrys run through the five points in opposite universal phases, successfully separating their realities without erasing either. The team then forces the Time Trapper into the space between moments, and the alternate Barry and Iris return home. Eddie's history becomes temporally stable, while Barry publicly reveals his identity to Central City, announcing that he is the Flash.

Following Barry's public identity reveal, increased media attention disrupts his personal life and prompts CCPD to require independent review of cases involving the Flash. Iris is removed from the Flash beat because of their relationship. Barry and Eddie investigate Russell Glosson, a former Kord Dynamics scientist who can absorb and store kinetic energy, and Glosson later uses stolen capacitors to create a field that progressively removes motion across Central City. Because using his speed strengthens the field, Barry approaches Glosson without super-speed and discovers that the capacitors become unstable when their stored energy is depleted. With Wally and Cisco disabling external relays, Barry releases the central capacitor and convinces Glosson to help redirect its energy through a breach, preventing the destruction of downtown. Glosson is arrested, while Barry publicly establishes boundaries regarding his family and private life but confirms that he will continue operating as the Flash.
