Series overview
Minecraft is a gripping series centered around Steve Stonecutter, a skilled and compassionate craftsman in a fantastical world. Steve's peaceful life is upended when he encounters Herobrine, his malevolent doppelgänger, whose arrival threatens the balance of their world. Herobrine, a sinister mirror image of Steve, possesses similar skills but uses them for dark purposes, seeking to reshape the world in his own image.
Set five months before the events of Minecraft Season 1, Agent Derp picks up in 2022 with Johnson Derp or simply known as "Derp" being ordered to track and locate a bounty. This long mission takes him through the world, he'll meet friends, Alex Stonecutter... and will finally... hopefully... become a Agent for the Good Justice Society.

Each episode delves into Steve's quest to thwart Herobrine's nefarious plans. Along the way, Steve uncovers the mysterious origins of Herobrine, revealing a complex connection between them. The series is a journey of discovery, where Steve learns about the true extent of his abilities and the responsibility that comes with them. He gathers a diverse group of allies, each with unique talents and backgrounds, united by the common goal of stopping Herobrine.

Minecraft is not just a battle of good versus evil; it's a story about understanding one's identity, the power of unity against divisiveness, and the consequences of choices made. With each encounter between Steve and Herobrine, the stakes get higher, leading to a climactic confrontation that tests the limits of Steve's courage, ingenuity, and commitment to his principles. This series combines action, fantasy, and emotional storytelling, appealing to an audience that appreciates a deep narrative interwoven with thrilling adventures.

| ShortSummary        = Young, untrained Derp barely survives an attack by crimson-armored vindicators in the frozen taiga before being rescued by a mysterious GJS operative, awakening under Rook’s watch inside a fortified safehouse where he’s informed his survival was the first part of a test: track a rogue figure known as the Walker, recover the stolen artifact he carries, and do it alone because he’s the only one the target won’t sense coming. Sent into the wilds with a map and a too-big cloak, Derp crosses the plains and stumbles into Alex, who sees through his inexperience and chooses to help despite the danger, accompanying him into a warped valley scarred by void-energy where they confront the Walker holding a pulsing crystalline cube and wielding tendrils that bend reality. Outmatched, Derp protects Alex but fails to stop the Walker, who escapes after taunting him and warning that Rook sent the wrong pawn. Defeated but alive, Derp returns expecting dismissal, only for Rook to reveal the opposite: the mission continues, Alex is now part of it, and Derp’s failure proved he’s the unpredictable asset the GJS needs. At dawn, Derp and Alex stand over the ridge accepting their new partnership, determined to hunt the Walker down and retrieve the artifact before it reshapes their world.

| ShortSummary        = Derp and Alex arrive at the mountain-fortress headquarters of the Good Justice Society, where Rook reveals that the Walker’s stolen relic — the Demerald — is destabilising entire provinces and feeding a force older than the End or Nether. Derp stumbles through a disastrous but “passable” Agent orientation, earning a reluctant greenlight to continue the mission, and Alex secures inclusion only because Derp insists he can’t survive without her. Their briefing exposes the truth about the relic: each surge the Walker triggers charges a structure capable of opening a void gate to the ancient entity he serves. Tracking him into the Mirelands, Derp and Alex confront him again, only to be outmatched as the Walker uses the Demerald to open a crackling void rift, taunts Derp about being expendable, and hints at a hidden power inside him before escaping through the portal and collapsing the swamp around them. Back at GJS Command, Rook confirms Derp’s survival of void exposure shouldn’t be possible unless he carries a connection the Society has never disclosed, making him the key to stopping — or empowering — the Walker’s plan. Shaken but resolute, Derp accepts his new role as an official Agent while Alex stands firmly at his side, the two preparing for the inevitable moment when the Walker stops running and comes directly for him.

| ShortSummary        = Derp and Alex return to GJS headquarters still reeling from Derp’s void flickers, only for a battered Buddy to stumble in with a warning that the Walker is hunting Derp and building a machine fueled by Demerald shards and widening void fissures. After a tense interrogation reveals Buddy fled the Walker’s wrath and now wants to help prevent a catastrophe, Derp chooses to bring him onto the team. The trio track the Walker across the Bone Cliffs, battle a massive void golem Buddy destroys by detonating its core, and reach a half-built void engine where the Walker appears to taunt Derp about “awakening” and to twist Buddy’s memories into a weapon against him. Buddy resists, reaffirming his loyalty, while the Walker unleashes a wave of void creatures before vanishing and leaving his machine humming toward completion. Back at GJS, Rook warns that if the machine opens the Rift the multiverse will be flooded with void fragments, and Derp, Alex, and Buddy commit to stopping the Walker at dawn — fully aware that the Walker’s true target is Derp himself.

| ShortSummary        = Derp, Alex, and Buddy arrive at the void-ravaged Mirelands to discover the Walker’s machine nearly complete and guarded by the terrifying Angel of Death, forcing the GJS to launch a desperate full-scale strike. As Rook rallies his agents for a mission that none expect to survive, Derp volunteers to confront the Walker directly while Alex and Buddy refuse to let him go alone. The battle erupts around the towering construct as void creatures pour through a widening rift, the Walker taunts Derp about the void awakening inside him, and the Angel of Death prepares to enter the Realms. Amid the chaos Buddy identifies the machine’s core and, in a reckless act of redemption, destroys it with explosive talismans, sacrificing himself and severing the Angel’s connection to the Rift. With the machine collapsing and the Angel weakened, Derp and Alex strike together, driving a Demerald shard into the Angel’s core and annihilating it in a blast that seals the portal. Though the Walker escapes, the GJS survives, Buddy is lost, and Derp’s void-flickering eyes make clear that the Walker’s plan to awaken something inside him has already begun — leaving Derp and Alex vowing to finish the fight the Walker started.

Development
In 2012, Mojang received offers from Hollywood producers who wanted to produce Minecraft-related TV shows; however, Mojang stated they would only engage in such projects when "the right idea comes along." In July 2013, Freddie Goodwin began developing a animated television series that would explore the story that fans created between Steve and Alex. Goodwin explained he took inspiration from Squared Media when writing the scripts and stated multiple villains would appear in the season, but only one would be the "big one" that would cause chaos in the season. Goodwin wrote most of the episodes alongside Greene. The episodes were all directed by Goodwin. He expressed interest in making a second season if the cast would want it and that the first season recieves positive reviews and reception from fans.

Writing
A writer's room for the series had been formed in 2017 by the time development of the series was announced in 2020. In addition to Goodwin and Greene, writers for the series, announced as the Producers of the season. In November 2021, it was confirmed that the team would adapt storylines from Squared Media productions.

Goodwin expressed interest in doing more than one season and stated the first season would tell "one of many stories". According to both Goodwin and Greene, the season is like the MCU, the team looked at multiple storylines from Squared Media, and took some characters and focused on that. Goodwin confirmed the story would be part "Animation Life 1–3" and potentially other storylines from the Comics.
Development
In 2022, after the release of the first season of the original series, Freddie Goodwin announced a spin-off titled "Agent Derp" would be released in 2025 and that he doesn't know how many episodes the series would feature. In June 2023, it was confirmed to consist of 4 episodes. In 2022, Mob Productions announced they plan to release one series each year either a season of the main series, or a spin-off focusing on a singler character. By June 2023, Mob Productions had already officially confirmed the series had finished production in December 2022 and will be coming at a later date. The release date was pushed forward from March 2025 to December 2024.

Casting and voice recording
Writing
Mob Productions plan for the series was to have two actors star the series for the two lead roles. However, they decided to take a more traditional approach with set actors for set characters throughout the seasons. During this time, Jack Black was cast to play Steve and Zendaya joined as Alex. Tom Holland joined the project as Derp in 2021. In 2024, Zendaya announced that she has left the project feeling she only wanted to do a single season. Mob Productions announced that the character would be recasted. In June 2024, it was confirmed that Amy Poehler would voice Alex in future seasons.
Lead writer Wilma Zimmerman, who wrote the seventh episode of the first season of Minecraft, stated multiple times that the series' would be set before the events of the first season of Minecraft by a unknown parameter of time. In June 2023, Zimmerman confirmed the series to be set a total of 5 months before the main series.

Photorealistic animation
Casting
Unlike other animation, Goodwin wanted to use photorealistic animation for Minecraft. They kept the 3D dimension blocked shapes of the game to keep the feeling of the game theme. However, they weren't strict on what they can add and do within the universe.
In March 2022, Tom Holland announced that he was discussing with Mob Productions on his future as Derp and his contract. By May 2022, Holland was officially confirmed to be reprising his role in all future projects featuring Derp. In March 2024, it was announced officially that Josh Brolin would reprise his role as the Angel of Death and Amy Poehler as Alex Stonecutter.

Music
Animation
In order to keep the theme and music for the series as close to the video game, Goodwin approached C418, Lena Raine, Kumi Tanioka, and Aaron Cherof to make the score for the series.
The series will feature the same animation style that the main series uses and will be done through the use of the Unreal Engine.
