The fourth season of the American superhero television series The Flash, based on the Barry Allen incarnation of the Flash from DC Comics, consists of 13 episodes.

The season is divided into two parts. The first part consists of five episodes, while the second consists of eight episodes.

Gustin Barry and Patton Iris are pulled into Central City as temporal distortions begin overlapping different eras throughout the city. Barry, Wally and Cisco encounter Edward Clariss / the Rival, a speedster restored from the timeline Barry erased while undoing Merrick Wren's exposure of his identity. Clariss reveals that Barry's actions erased his wife and son, while Cisco discovers that a mysterious figure known as the Time Trapper restored Clariss and is holding the deleted timeline open. During Founders Night, Clariss fractures the plaza across multiple eras and attempts to kill Iris and Patton Iris. Barry intervenes at super-speed and redirects Clariss' momentum, accidentally breaking his neck. Barry voluntarily surrenders while Cisco confirms that every alternative action he could have taken would also have caused a death. Charged with second-degree murder, Barry agrees to temporarily surrender his Flash equipment. Meanwhile, Time Trapper declares that Barry's death of Clariss is only the "first account" in his plan to make Central City judge the consequences of Barry's alterations to time.
