ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is a 2020 first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the thirteenth main installment of the ShooterofIO series and the fifth main entry in the Dark Warfare sub-series, following ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 (2018) and continuing the storyline that began with ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009). Set during a fictionalized historical conflict, the single-player campaign follows Task Force Bravo as they investigate surviving networks connected to the Havel Program, abandoned black sites, and covert military operations hidden from public record.[1][2] As with previous ShooterofIO titles, the game also includes a multiplayer component and the cooperative Zombies mode.[3][4]

Development on Dark Warfare 5 was led by Air Studios after a War Games project originally planned for 2020 was moved to 2021 following creative disagreements between War Games and Supreme Studios.[5] Mob Productions confirmed the game on March 20, 2020, announcing current-generation and next-generation console versions and a planned integration with the free-to-play title ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0.[6][7] Marketing continued with the poster and mode announcement on April 16, a full reveal on May 16, and a July 1 presentation that detailed multiplayer, Zombies, beta dates, and additional launch information.[3][8][9] A multiplayer beta was held across PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in October 2020. The game was released worldwide on November 13, 2020, and Mob Productions confirmed that Season 1 and the Wargrounds 2.0 integration would begin on December 10.[10][11]

Dark Warfare 5 received generally favorable reviews from critics.[12][13][14] Reviewers praised the campaign's atmosphere, historical setting, mission variety, and the rebuilt Zombies mode, while criticism was directed at uneven multiplayer pacing, technical issues on older consoles, and the campaign's reduced scope compared with the previously considered open-world format.[15][16] Season 1 began on December 10, 2020, adding new multiplayer content, Zombies content, and the game's integration with Wargrounds 2.0.[17]

Gameplay

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 is a first-person shooter game with a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and cooperative Zombies mode.[3][8] The campaign is built around mission-based levels rather than the open-world format used by ShooterofIO: Modern Ops.[1][18] Missions include stealth infiltration, direct combat, evidence recovery, hostage rescue, sabotage, and defensive encounters. Several levels contain larger combat spaces with multiple buildings, roads, paths, enemy positions, optional areas, and alternate approaches within mission-specific locations.[1][18]

The multiplayer mode uses custom classes, weapon progression, perks, scorestreaks, field upgrades, public playlists, private matches, and a Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[19] It includes standard 6v6 maps, larger objective-based maps, and modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, Secure Line, Patrol, Control Point, and Hardpoint. Movement includes sprinting, crouching, proning, mantling, sliding, tactical sprint, weapon mounting, and door interaction, with tuning based around grounded movement, weapon weight, physical animation, and responsive handling. Multiplayer also includes Combat Pacing, which groups some playlists by player count and map size, and an expanded Field Upgrade system in which equipment charges during a match rather than being selected as a permanent class ability.[19] Season 1 adds additional multiplayer maps, weapons, and integration with Wargrounds 2.0, allowing compatible Dark Warfare 5 content to appear in the free-to-play game.[17]

Zombies is a cooperative round-based survival mode.[4] At launch, the mode includes the map Totenwald, set around a collapsed Havel Program research site hidden beneath a forest village.[20] The mode retains waves of undead enemies, points, perk machines, wall weapons, mystery boxes, traps, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, and map-based progression, while adding rebuilt systems for character growth, match modifiers, enemy escalation, and objective layers. Aether Runes act as selectable match modifiers, while Salvage is used during matches to craft equipment, repair armor, and upgrade weapon rarity. Ritual Events appear as optional round objectives that reward upgrades, currency, or access to hidden areas when completed. Zombies includes public and private matches, round-based progression, difficulty escalation, weapon rarity tiers, armor, exfil opportunities, and shared weapon progression with multiplayer.[4][20] Season 1 expands the mode with an additional survival map, new Ritual Event variants, new enemy types, and seasonal challenges connected to the wider post-launch progression system.[17]

Premise

The campaign returns the Dark Warfare sub-series to a historical setting after the futuristic setting of Dark Warfare 4.[18] The story follows covert military and intelligence operations involving hidden programs, misinformation, private military forces, and classified research connected to earlier Dark Warfare events.[1][18] Air Studios described the campaign as a fictional story built within a real historical foundation, using real locations, conflicts, and historical references as the basis for events occurring behind the scenes within the game's universe.[18]

Development

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 was developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015), and Dark Warfare 4.[6] On June 15, 2020, reports stated that the 2020 ShooterofIO release had not originally been planned as Dark Warfare 5 and had not initially been assigned to Air Studios. According to the reports, a War Games-led title was originally scheduled for 2020 but was moved to 2021 after creative disagreements between War Games and Supreme Studios, a newly involved studio working with Mob Productions. Air Studios then took full charge of the 2020 release, which became Dark Warfare 5.[5]

The planned integration between Dark Warfare 5 and Wargrounds 2.0 was announced alongside the game's confirmation.[7] In an interview published on June 18, Air Studios said the integration mainly affected development through early technical standards, as weapons, Operators, cosmetics, movement systems, progression items, and other compatible content had to be built so that they could later function inside Wargrounds 2.0.[18] The studio said the main game was still being designed around its own campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes first, and that weapon or movement values could be balanced separately once content entered Wargrounds 2.0.[18]

Air Studios said an open-world campaign inspired by Modern Ops had been considered earlier in development but was cancelled because the team did not have enough time to build it to the intended standard.[18] The cancelled version would have used a more open historical setting with side objectives, larger spaces, vehicles, and behind-enemy-lines mission flow, but the studio said it would have required more development time for artificial intelligence, mission design, environments, vehicles, and meaningful open areas. After the open-world format was dropped, the team moved toward a more traditional mission structure closer to Dark Warfare 4, with greater emphasis on handcrafted levels, pacing, set pieces, characters, and mission variety.[18]

The game was fully revealed on May 16, 2020, with a campaign presentation, multiplayer overview, Zombies gameplay reveal, Windows version confirmation, and November 13 release date.[8] Air Studios presented the campaign as broader than Dark Warfare 4 despite the removal of the open-world structure, with missions built around larger combat arenas, stealth opportunities, optional spaces, and multiple approaches.[1][18] The studio also said the campaign would include choices in some missions, with certain events developing differently depending on player discoveries, completed objectives, trust, and how situations are handled, though it did not confirm multiple endings.[18]

The July 1 multiplayer reveal expanded on the game's competitive component.[19] Air Studios said the mode was designed to preserve the structure of Dark Warfare multiplayer while modernizing weapon handling, class building, map flow, and support systems. The reveal detailed Gunsmith, Field Upgrades, scorestreaks, larger objective-based maps, standard 6v6 maps, and several returning modes. The studio also described the game's movement as grounded rather than slow, with weapon weight, direction changes, and animation physicality intended to give the multiplayer a heavier feel than the more futuristic entries while still remaining responsive.[19][18]

The Zombies reveal focused on rebuilt systems for the mode.[4] Air Studios said the team wanted Zombies to remain round-based while making match progression more flexible than in Dark Warfare 4. Salvage, armor repair, weapon-rarity upgrades, Aether Runes, Ritual Events, exfil, and new enemy-escalation rules were presented as the main additions, while perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, traps, radios, and high-round survival remained core parts of the mode.[4] The studio also said Zombies would have connections to the campaign, although the mode was intended to stand on its own without requiring campaign completion.[18]

Marketing and release

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 was announced on March 20, 2020.[6] The announcement confirmed PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X versions and stated that the game would be integrated with Wargrounds 2.0 in late 2020.[6][7] Mob Productions released the game's poster and confirmed its campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes on April 16.[3] The full reveal took place on May 16, confirming the Windows version, first gameplay demonstrations, multiplayer overview, Zombies systems, and worldwide release date of November 13, 2020.[8]

Reports on June 15, 2020, stated that the game had become the 2020 ShooterofIO release after a War Games project was delayed to 2021 because of creative disagreements involving War Games and Supreme Studios.[5] On June 18, Air Studios discussed the game's production, cancelled open-world campaign concept, Wargrounds 2.0 integration, historical setting, campaign structure, movement, Zombies changes, and planned seasonal support.[18]

On July 1, 2020, Mob Productions and Air Studios held a multiplayer and Zombies reveal for Dark Warfare 5.[2] The presentation showed multiplayer systems, launch playlists, weapon customization, field upgrades, scorestreaks, map types, Zombies progression systems, and additional information about the game's connection to Wargrounds 2.0.[19][4] Mob Productions also confirmed the beta schedule. A PlayStation 4 pre-order beta took place from October 8 to 9, followed by a PlayStation 4 open beta from October 10 to 12. A cross-platform early-access beta for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One was held from October 15 to 16, followed by an open cross-platform beta from October 17 to 19.[9] The beta included selected multiplayer maps, 6v6 modes, larger objective-based modes, Gunsmith progression, Field Upgrades, scorestreaks, and a limited progression cap.[9][21]

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 was released worldwide on November 13, 2020.[10] On the same day, Mob Productions confirmed that Season 1 would begin on December 10 and would launch the game's integration with Wargrounds 2.0.[11] The integration was announced to bring compatible Dark Warfare 5 weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, and themed content into Wargrounds 2.0, with separate balancing for the free-to-play title where needed.[11][18] Air Studios also published launch information for Zombies, confirming Totenwald as the game's launch Zombies map and outlining its round-based progression, Ritual Events, Salvage economy, armor system, and exfil structure.[20]

Season 1 began on December 10, 2020.[17] The update added the multiplayer maps Depot 16, Snowline, and Karsk Outpost, the weapons Volk-45 and M1919, new multiplayer playlists, additional seasonal challenges, and new operator cosmetics. Zombies content included the new map Projekt Nachtfall, additional Ritual Event variants, new enemy behavior, and balance changes to Salvage, armor, and weapon rarity upgrades. The update also began the game's integration with Wargrounds 2.0, adding Dark Warfare 5 weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, and themed content to the free-to-play title.[17]

Post-launch

Season 1 began on December 10, 2020, and was the first major post-launch update for Dark Warfare 5.[17] Unlike several previous ShooterofIO releases, the season was identified only by its number and did not use a subtitle. The update added the multiplayer maps Depot 16, Snowline, and Karsk Outpost, the weapons Volk-45 and M1919, limited-time playlists, additional seasonal challenges, operator cosmetics, and balance changes across multiplayer and Zombies.[17]

The Zombies portion of Season 1 added Projekt Nachtfall, a second round-based survival map connected to abandoned Havel Program research facilities.[17] The update expanded the mode's rebuilt systems with additional Ritual Event variants, new enemy behavior, seasonal progression challenges, and tuning changes to Salvage, armor repair, and weapon rarity upgrades. Season 1 also began the integration between Dark Warfare 5 and ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0, adding compatible weapons, Operators, cosmetics, progression items, and themed content from Air Studios' game to the free-to-play title while allowing Wargrounds 2.0 to keep separate balance values.[17]

Reception

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[12][22][13][23][14]

Critics responded positively to the campaign, particularly its atmosphere, mission variety, historical setting, and return to the conspiracy-driven tone of earlier Dark Warfare games.[15][24] Reviewers said the move away from the open-world format of Modern Ops made the campaign feel more focused, with stronger pacing and more carefully authored set pieces, although some noted that the larger mission spaces sometimes suggested a broader game that had been reduced in scope during development.[16][26] Game Informer praised the campaign's use of optional intelligence, alternate routes, and player choices, while IGN said the story succeeded most when it leaned into paranoia and historical fiction rather than direct military spectacle.[24][15]

The multiplayer component received a more mixed response than the campaign.[16][25] Critics praised the weapon feel, Gunsmith system, grounded movement, map readability, and return of traditional class-based progression, but were divided on Combat Pacing, scorestreak balance, and the heavier movement model. Several reviews said the slower rhythm helped distinguish the game from the more futuristic Dark Warfare 4, while others felt that some maps encouraged defensive play and made 6v6 matches less fluid than previous entries.[16][25][26] The next-generation versions were generally praised for more stable performance and faster loading, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were criticized for visual compromises, texture pop-in, and occasional frame-rate drops.[22][23][13][14]

Zombies was widely viewed as one of the game's stronger modes.[15][24] Reviewers praised Totenwald for its layout, atmosphere, optional Ritual Events, Salvage economy, armor system, and more flexible match progression, with several critics calling it more approachable than the quest-heavy maps from earlier Air Studios entries while still retaining the round-based structure of the series.[15][16] Some criticism was directed at the mode launching with only one map and at the need for post-launch content to give the rebuilt systems more variety, but most reviews described Zombies as a strong foundation for the game's planned seasonal support.[24][26]

Reviewers also commented on the game's relationship with ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0.[15][16] While the integration was not active at review time, critics noted that the shared weapons, Operators, cosmetics, and progression items could give the game a longer post-launch life if balancing remained separate between the premium title and the free-to-play game. Some reviewers were cautious about how much of the game's seasonal identity appeared tied to future updates, but said the launch package felt more complete than if major multiplayer or Zombies systems had been held back for Season 1.[16][26]
