The first season of the American television series ''[[The Flash (2014 TV series)|The Flash]]'' premiered on [[The CW]] on October 7, 2014, and concluded on May 19, 2015, after airing 23 episodes. The series is based on the [[DC Comics]] character [[Flash (Barry Allen)|Barry Allen / Flash]], a costumed superhero crime-fighter with the power to move at superhuman speeds. It is a [[Spin-off (media)|spin-off]] from ''[[Arrow (TV series)|Arrow]]'', existing in the same [[Arrowverse|fictional universe]], and was produced by [[Berlanti Productions]], [[Warner Bros. Television]], and [[DC Comics|DC Entertainment]], with [[Andrew Kreisberg]] serving as [[showrunner]].
 
The series follows [[Barry Allen (Arrowverse)|Allen]], portrayed by [[Grant Gustin]], a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed, which he uses to fight criminals, including others who have also gained superhuman abilities. | ShortSummary    = Wells begins testing Barry's powers by having him perform multiple tasks at superspeed. In the middle of the tests, a group of men attempt to hijack an armored truck carrying a diamond on its way to a museum. | ShortSummary    = Barry speeds off to stop a car thief; but the thief's skin turns to steel and Barry breaks his hand while punching. He runs back to the lab before he can be hurt further. | ShortSummary    = Eddie proposes a task force to hunt down the Flash. | ShortSummary    = While looking for Eddie and Eobard, Barry confronts a would-be thief at the gold reserve, before being disoriented by an unknown psychological attack. Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Iris confronts Barry about being the Flash. He is able to stop the thief, who turns out to be Eiling, mind-controlled by Grodd. With a lead from Iris, Barry, Joe and Cisco head into the sewers to look for Grodd. The trio realize that Grodd is getting smarter and larger, and during an attack, Joe is kidnapped by Grodd. Barry is able to fight off Grodd's psychic attack and trick him into jumping in front of an on-coming train. Eiling is freed. Meanwhile, Thawne works on a device that will allow him to return to his own time. He reveals to Eddie, Iris and Barry's marriage in the future. Later Thawne completes the device and is revealed to be hiding in a secret chamber inside S.T.A.R. Labs.

| ShortSummary    = Cisco discovers that Eobard has been supercharging his speed through his wheelchair, which is why he is so much faster than Barry. The particle accelerator is activated by Eobard, who has managed to repair it. The team is able to find and rescue Eddie, who ends his relationship with Iris. Worried that the metahumans imprisoned inside the particle accelerator will be killed when it reaches full power, the team plans to relocate them to Oliver's prison on Lian Yu. In order to set up a safe transport, Barry requests Leonard's help. Leonard agrees but only after Barry erases all of Leonard's criminal record. Barry ultimately appeared twice in ''Arrow''{{'}}s second season, with the planned backdoor pilot canceled in favor of a traditional pilot by The CW executives, who had been impressed by early cuts of Barry's first two episodes on ''Arrow''. The first season of the American television series The Flash premiered on January 20, 2026, on The CW, and concluded on March 10, 2026. The season consisted of eight episodes. The series was developed by Freddie Goodwin and was based on the DC Comics character Barry Allen / Flash, created by Robert Kanigher, John Broome, and Carmine Infantino.

Set within the same continuity as Superboy and The Nightingale, the season follows forensic investigator Barry Allen after he gains superhuman speed following a catastrophic particle accelerator incident in Central City. While attempting to understand his new abilities, Barry uncovers a conspiracy connected to the accelerator explosion, mysterious metahuman murders, and a hidden figure manipulating events from within S.T.A.R. Labs.

The season stars Dylan O'Brien as Barry Allen / Flash, alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, and Michael Emerson.

Premise

Months after a particle accelerator explosion strikes Central City, forensic investigator Barry Allen awakens from a coma with the ability to move at impossible superhuman speeds. As Barry attempts to embrace his role as a hero, a series of metahumans begin emerging throughout the city following the accelerator disaster.

With the help of scientists at S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry becomes the Flash and investigates increasingly dangerous threats tied to the explosion. However, Barry gradually uncovers evidence that the accelerator incident was not an accident, leading him toward a hidden conspiracy involving time manipulation, metahuman experimentation, and the murder of his mother years earlier.

Production

Development

Development on The Flash began in late 2024 following the conclusion of Superboy. According to showrunner Freddie Goodwin, the series was designed to be more grounded, emotionally driven, and mystery-oriented than previous adaptations of the character.

Unlike traditional portrayals of the Flash mythos, the season heavily emphasized forensic investigation, conspiracy elements, and psychological consequences tied to Barry Allen's powers and trauma surrounding his mother's murder.

Writing

The first season was written as a contained eight-episode story with a clear beginning, middle, and ending. Goodwin stated that the writers wanted the season to feel "fast emotionally, not just physically" and described the Reverse Flash storyline as a psychological battle between obsession and hope.

The season drew inspiration from Flashpoint, The Return of Barry Allen, and The Man in the Yellow Suit, while also incorporating noir thriller influences and science-fiction mystery storytelling.

Casting

Dylan O'Brien was cast as Barry Allen in April 2025 following multiple auditions. Goodwin described O'Brien as bringing "human vulnerability and nervous energy" to the role.

Tom Cavanagh was cast as Harrison Wells, while Michael Emerson joined the series as Eobard Thawne / Reverse Flash. Emerson's performance was widely praised by critics following the season premiere.
