ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the fourth main entry in the Dark Warfare sub-series and a main installment in the ShooterofIO series, following ShooterofIO: 1950 (2017). The game was announced on May 15, 2018, and is scheduled to be released on November 6, 2018, for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[1][2]

The game will include a single-player campaign, a competitive multiplayer component, and Zombies.[3] Its worldwide reveal on June 12, 2018, confirmed the release date and detailed several campaign systems, while providing limited information about multiplayer and Zombies.[2] A Zombies reveal was released on August 7, focusing on the launch map "Gravenhurst".[4] Multiplayer was revealed on August 22, 2018, confirming 12 core maps, several returning and new modes, and changes to class creation, movement, and scorestreak progression.[5]

Gameplay

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 will be a first-person shooter game.[3] It will comprise three main game modes: a single-player campaign mode; a competitive multiplayer component; and the cooperative Zombies mode.[3] The campaign includes reactive alarm states, optional intelligence recovery, alternate entry routes, and a Field Evidence system used to collect files, recordings, photographs, and physical objects for additional story context.[6][7] Air Studios said these additions were intended to make campaign missions more responsive without changing the mode into an open-world structure.[6]

The multiplayer mode is set to feature 12 core 6v6 maps at launch, accompanied by returning modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Headquarters, Capture the Flag, and Secure Line.[5] New modes include Breachline, in which teams fight to open and defend sequential access points across a map, and Blackout Control, a variant built around temporary radar disruption and objective capture.[8] The reveal confirmed the return of traditional custom classes, perks, scorestreaks, weapon progression, public playlists, private matches, and 6v6 core playlists, while introducing Blacksite Streak Tuning, a system that gives additional score value to objective play and support actions without replacing scorestreaks.[5] Movement changes include faster mantle recovery and smoother slide-to-fire timing compared with ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III, while the mini-map retains standard red-dot behavior for unsuppressed gunfire in most public modes.[5]

Zombies is a round-based cooperative survival mode centered on the launch map "Gravenhurst", which is set in a European town affected by an unstable Aetheris breach.[4][9] The mode includes perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapons, main quests, traps, hidden radios, and high-round survival.[4] A new system called Fractures temporarily changes parts of a map by altering enemy spawns, opening short-lived routes, or revealing quest objects.[10]

Premise

Dark Warfare 4 continues the covert military tone of the Dark Warfare sub-series. The campaign concerns renewed activity surrounding classified sites and materials connected to earlier black operations, although Air Studios had not released a full story synopsis by August 2018.[6]

The Zombies story continues the Aetheris storyline from earlier Dark Warfare games. The August 7 reveal confirmed that Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen return as the main Zombies crew, with "Gravenhurst" following the group as they investigate a town where physical space has begun to overlap with Aetheris.[11]

Development

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 is being developed by Air Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2009), ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare II (2012), and ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare III (2015).[12] It is published by Mob Productions and uses the SOI Engine.[1]

The game continues the franchise's current-generation platform approach, with versions confirmed for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[13] No PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U versions were announced.[13]

Air Studios said the campaign systems were developed to support the tone of the Dark Warfare sub-series.[6] In a June 12 developer overview, the studio described the campaign as focused on "pressure, evidence, and escalation" rather than large-scale battlefield freedom.[6] The developer said that missions would include more optional information and reactive elements than earlier entries, while still following a directed narrative structure.[7]

Air Studios described the Zombies reveal as a continuation of the design approach used in Dark Warfare III rather than a reboot of the mode.[4] The studio said that Fractures were created to make maps feel unstable without replacing the traditional structure of round-based survival.[10]

For multiplayer, Air Studios said it wanted to keep the mode familiar after the divisive changes made to the multiplayer component of ShooterofIO: Shadows.[5] The studio described its approach as preserving core competitive readability while making smaller changes to objective scoring, mantle recovery, and scorestreak pacing.[5]

Marketing and release

ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 was announced on May 15, 2018.[1] The announcement confirmed the title, developer, publisher, 2018 release window, supported platforms, and the return of Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.[1][3]

The initial announcement used a short teaser trailer and a publisher news post rather than a full gameplay reveal.[14] On May 22, 2018, Air Studios released a follow-up teaser announcing that the game's worldwide reveal would take place on June 12, 2018.[15]

On June 1, 2018, Air Studios released the opening five seconds of the worldwide reveal trailer.[16] The preview was presented as a short promotional clip ahead of the June 12 reveal and did not include a gameplay breakdown.[16]

The worldwide reveal took place on June 12, 2018.[2] It confirmed the worldwide release date of November 6, 2018, and included the first broader gameplay overview for the campaign.[2][6] The same presentation gave limited information about multiplayer and Zombies, including confirmation of 6v6 multiplayer playlists and the name of the Zombies launch map, "Gravenhurst".[17][18]

On June 19, 2018, Air Studios confirmed that the dedicated Zombies reveal for Dark Warfare 4 would take place sometime in August 2018.[19] The announcement did not include additional Zombies gameplay details beyond the previously announced launch map name.[19]

On July 10, 2018, Air Studios released a cinematic teaser for "Gravenhurst", the launch Zombies map.[20] The teaser confirmed that the full Zombies reveal would take place on August 7, 2018. It was presented as a story-focused promotional video and did not include a full gameplay breakdown.[20]

The dedicated Zombies reveal was released on August 7, 2018.[4] It focused on "Gravenhurst", confirmed the return of Noah Mad, Sarah Caster, Nikolai Dawn, and Edward Richtofen, and outlined the mode's round-based structure, main quest, Wonder Weapon, perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, and Fractures.[4][11][10]

The multiplayer reveal was released on August 22, 2018.[5] It confirmed 12 launch maps, returning modes, the new modes Breachline and Blackout Control, traditional custom classes, scorestreaks, standard mini-map behavior, and changes to objective score and movement recovery.[5][8] The reveal also confirmed that a multiplayer beta would take place in September 2018.[21]

Early coverage of the announcement focused on Air Studios' return to the Dark Warfare sub-series and the confirmation that Zombies would return after ShooterofIO: 1950 used DMZ as its cooperative mode.[22] Coverage of the June 12 reveal focused mainly on the campaign systems and the confirmed November release date, while noting that fuller multiplayer and Zombies presentations were still expected later in the marketing cycle.[23] Coverage of the August 7 presentation described Zombies as the most detailed part of the game's marketing up to that point, while coverage of the August 22 multiplayer reveal noted its return to a more familiar competitive structure after Shadows.[24][25]
