Development of the game began in April 2024, following the cancellation of the original version by Mob Productions. The project was restarted as a new edition designed to allow easier integration with other titles in the franchise. Wargrounds 2.0 was released on November 22, 2025. The game was shut down on March 28, 2026, though the Battle Royale mode was moved to Modern Ops 2.

ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is an open-world player-versus-environment (PvE) extraction mode that succeeds the Operations mode introduced in 1: Modern Ops (2023). The mode features large-scale maps, persistent progression, and session-based gameplay similar to the DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Warzone (2022). It integrates with premium ShooterofIO titles beginning with ShooterofIO: Modern Ops 2, supporting shared progression across weapons, attachments, equipment, perks, killstreaks, camos, and cosmetic items. At launch, the mode includes three large-scale maps and the full weapon arsenal from Modern Ops 2, with seasonal updates planned to introduce additional content.

In Wargrounds 2.0, up to 24 players deploy across shared open-world environments in separate squads. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes, during which players explore the map, engage AI-controlled enemies, complete dynamic Contracts, and secure loot from strongholds and enemy encampments. Squads may extract early to retain collected equipment or continue deeper into high-threat areas for greater rewards. If the session timer expires, a poisonous gas storm begins closing in on the map, forcing remaining players to reach extraction points before the area becomes inaccessible.

Players deploy with a customizable loadout consisting of a primary weapon, secondary weapon, melee item, Field Upgrade, lethal and tactical equipment, and a Perk Package. Additional items can be collected during matches and stored using a Backpack system that allows players to carry spare ammunition, utility equipment, Field Upgrades, and additional weapons. Extracted gear can be permanently stored or converted into schematics used to craft equipment for future sessions. Narrative objectives known as Operations Quests provide story-driven mission chains tied to the mode’s progression.
On August 5, 2019, SOI Studios published additional information about the mode's design and its relationship to Modern Ops. The studio described Wargrounds 2.0 as a way to reuse the campaign's open-world technology in a multiplayer setting without turning the main campaign into an online-only experience. The team said the mode was designed around squad decision-making, risk, extraction, and player encounters rather than a fixed match objective, with contracts and extraction points used to create smaller goals across the map. SOI Studios also said that the mode would share progression with Modern Ops multiplayer, allowing weapons and loadouts to remain part of the wider game economy while still giving Wargrounds 2.0 its own match structure.

The world is divided into multiple difficulty zones that contain different enemy types, loot pools, and threat levels. Lower-tier areas allow players to gather resources with relatively low resistance, while higher-tier regions feature elite enemies, miniboss encounters, and more valuable rewards.

An alternative variant, "Cursed Mode", removes the match timer and focuses on endless survival. Difficulty increases over time through a Curse Meter that eventually triggers a "Blood Hunt", during which miniboss enemies actively pursue players. The mode also introduces additional mechanics such as "Dark Bargains", which exchange loot for temporary advantages, and "Cursed Schematics" used to craft powerful but fragile equipment.
Mob Productions also confirmed that post-launch content for Modern Ops would use a seasonal model rather than paid downloadable-content packs. As part of that model, Wargrounds 2.0 is planned to receive updates through free seasons, including additional contracts, limited-time events, map changes, weapons, and gameplay adjustments.

A Factions system provides additional long-term progression. Players can align with different groups that offer unique objectives, upgrades, and cosmetic rewards. Reputation with each faction is tracked separately, and allegiances may be changed between Seasons without losing previously earned rewards.

In addition to cooperative PvE gameplay, Wargrounds 2.0 includes a large-scale Battle Royale mode. In this mode, squads compete to become the last team remaining while scavenging weapons, equipment, and armor across the map. A shrinking safe zone gradually forces players into closer engagements. Eliminated players receive one opportunity to redeploy through a one-on-one duel in a separate arena known as the "Gulag", while teammates may also revive or redeploy allies through in-match systems.

ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is an upcoming first-person shooter multiplayer mode developed by SOI Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is planned as a post-launch experience for ShooterofIO: Modern Ops, which serves as its parent title. The mode is scheduled to be released worldwide on December 10, 2019, for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as part of the first season of free post-launch content for Modern Ops.[1]

Wargrounds 2.0 was first announced on April 10, 2019, when Mob Productions confirmed the release date and platforms for Modern Ops.[2] It was later detailed during the June 10 worldwide reveal for Modern Ops, where Mob Productions described it as a large-scale mode built from the campaign's open-world region and shared technology.[3] Further information, including its release date and connection to seasonal content, was announced on August 2, 2019.[1]

Gameplay

ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a large-scale multiplayer mode played on an expanded version of the open-world region used in the campaign of Modern Ops.[3] Players deploy in squads, collect weapons and equipment, complete objectives, fight enemy players, and attempt to extract before being eliminated.[3] The mode uses weapons, movement systems, vehicles, and locations from Modern Ops, including tactical sprint, weapon mounting, door interaction, field upgrades, and the Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[4]

Matches take place across districts containing loot, contracts, extraction points, vehicles, enemy patrols, and player-controlled squads.[4] Objectives include reconnaissance, sabotage, supply recovery, bounty hunting, and area control, with completed activities awarding equipment, match currency, and progression. Players can choose to avoid combat, pursue objectives, ambush other squads, or extract early with collected rewards. The mode features persistent loadout progression tied to Modern Ops, while equipment found during a match can be lost if a squad is eliminated before extraction.[4]

Development

Wargrounds 2.0 is being developed by SOI Studios alongside Modern Ops.[2] The mode was described as a post-launch extension of the parent title rather than a separate mainline entry in the ShooterofIO series.[1] Mob Productions first announced the mode without detailed gameplay information on April 10, 2019, stating only that it would release after Modern Ops.[2] During the June 10 worldwide reveal, the publisher said that the mode was being built from the same technology and world systems as the open-world campaign, including its larger Al Mazara region, vehicles, traversal systems, and mission structure.[3]

On August 5, 2019, SOI Studios published additional information about the mode's design and its relationship to Modern Ops.[4] The studio described Wargrounds 2.0 as a way to reuse the campaign's open-world technology in a multiplayer setting without turning the main campaign into an online-only experience. The team said the mode was designed around squad decision-making, risk, extraction, and player encounters rather than a fixed match objective, with contracts and extraction points used to create smaller goals across the map. SOI Studios also said that the mode would share progression with Modern Ops multiplayer, allowing weapons and loadouts to remain part of the wider game economy while still giving Wargrounds 2.0 its own match structure.[4]

Release

Wargrounds 2.0 was announced on April 10, 2019, alongside new information about Modern Ops.[2] First gameplay details were released during the June 10 worldwide reveal for Modern Ops, where the mode was presented as a post-launch experience connected to the campaign map.[3] On August 2, 2019, Mob Productions confirmed that the mode would be released on December 10, 2019, alongside the start of the first season of free post-launch content for Modern Ops.[1]

Mob Productions also confirmed that post-launch content for Modern Ops would use a seasonal model rather than paid downloadable-content packs.[1] As part of that model, Wargrounds 2.0 is planned to receive updates through free seasons, including additional contracts, limited-time events, map changes, weapons, and gameplay adjustments.[1][4]
