ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a first-person shooter multiplayer mode developed by SOI Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is a post-launch experience for ShooterofIO: Modern Ops, which serves as its parent title and was released on November 5, 2019. Access to the mode opened worldwide on December 3, 2019, for players who owned Modern Ops, ahead of a planned free-to-play release on December 10 alongside the start of the game's first season of free post-launch content.[1][2][3]
Wargrounds 2.0 was first announced on April 10, 2019, when Mob Productions confirmed the release date and platforms for Modern Ops.[4] It was later detailed during the June 10 worldwide reveal for Modern Ops, where Mob Productions described it as a large-scale mode built from the campaign's open-world region and shared technology.[5] Further information, including its release date and connection to seasonal content, was announced on August 2, 2019, while Battle Royale was revealed as one of its modes on September 1.[1][6] On October 16, Mob Productions announced that access would open on December 3 for owners of Modern Ops, followed by a free-to-play release on December 10.[2] The owner-access release went live on December 3, 2019.[3]
Gameplay
ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a large-scale multiplayer mode played on an expanded version of the open-world region used in the campaign of Modern Ops.[5] Players deploy in squads, collect weapons and equipment, complete objectives, fight enemy players, and attempt to extract before being eliminated.[5] The mode uses weapons, movement systems, vehicles, and locations from Modern Ops, including tactical sprint, weapon mounting, door interaction, field upgrades, and the Gunsmith weapon-customization system.[7]
Standard Wargrounds matches take place across districts containing loot, contracts, extraction points, vehicles, enemy patrols, and player-controlled squads.[7] Objectives include reconnaissance, sabotage, supply recovery, bounty hunting, and area control, with completed activities awarding equipment, match currency, and progression. Players can choose to avoid combat, pursue objectives, ambush other squads, or extract early with collected rewards. The mode features persistent loadout progression tied to Modern Ops, while equipment found during a match can be lost if a squad is eliminated before extraction.[7]
Battle Royale is a separate playlist in Wargrounds 2.0.[6] The mode places squads into the Al Mazara region without the extraction objective, requiring them to scavenge equipment, use vehicles, complete optional contracts, and survive against other squads until one squad remains. The playlist uses the same weapons, movement, map spaces, and progression links as the wider Wargrounds 2.0 mode, while focusing on elimination survival rather than extracting with collected rewards.[6]
Development
Wargrounds 2.0 is being developed by SOI Studios alongside Modern Ops.[4] The mode was described as a post-launch extension of the parent title rather than a separate mainline entry in the ShooterofIO series.[1] Mob Productions first announced the mode without detailed gameplay information on April 10, 2019, stating only that it would release after Modern Ops.[4] During the June 10 worldwide reveal, the publisher said that the mode was being built from the same technology and world systems as the open-world campaign, including its larger Al Mazara region, vehicles, traversal systems, and mission structure.[5]
On August 5, 2019, SOI Studios published additional information about the mode's design and its relationship to Modern Ops.[7] The studio described Wargrounds 2.0 as a way to reuse the campaign's open-world technology in a multiplayer setting without turning the main campaign into an online-only experience. The team said the mode was designed around squad decision-making, risk, extraction, and player encounters rather than a fixed match objective, with contracts and extraction points used to create smaller goals across the map. SOI Studios also said that the mode would share progression with Modern Ops multiplayer, allowing weapons and loadouts to remain part of the wider game economy while still giving Wargrounds 2.0 its own match structure.[7]
Battle Royale was revealed on September 1, 2019, as a separate playlist for Wargrounds 2.0.[6] SOI Studios described the playlist as using the same large map, movement, vehicles, weapons, and contract systems as the extraction-focused version of the mode, but with match flow centered on squad survival rather than leaving the map with recovered equipment.[6] On October 16, Mob Productions positioned the December 3 owner-access period as an early opening for Modern Ops players ahead of the wider free-to-play launch on December 10.[2]
Release
Wargrounds 2.0 was announced on April 10, 2019, alongside new information about Modern Ops.[4] First gameplay details were released during the June 10 worldwide reveal for Modern Ops, where the mode was presented as a post-launch experience connected to the campaign map.[5] On August 2, 2019, Mob Productions confirmed that the mode would be released alongside the start of the first season of free post-launch content for Modern Ops.[1] On October 16, the publisher announced that access would open on December 3 for players who owned Modern Ops, while the mode would become free to play on December 10 alongside Season 1.[2] Following the release of Modern Ops on November 5, Wargrounds 2.0 remained scheduled as a post-launch mode for December.[8] Access opened for owners of Modern Ops on December 3, 2019, one week before the planned free-to-play launch.[3]
Mob Productions also confirmed that post-launch content for Modern Ops would use a seasonal model rather than paid downloadable-content packs.[1] As part of that model, Wargrounds 2.0 is planned to receive updates through free seasons, including additional contracts, limited-time events, map changes, weapons, and gameplay adjustments.[1][7]
The mode's promotional artwork was released on September 1, 2019.[9] The same announcement revealed Battle Royale and confirmed that the September beta for Modern Ops would include a playable version of Wargrounds 2.0 Battle Royale.[6][10]
