On July 13, 2024, Goodwin released a presentation that was a hour and a half in duration on all the platforms revealing the plans of the universe and stated the first two films had already finished filming. In this presentation, Goodwin announced multiple films and stated a crossover film titled ''[[The X-Men Chronicles]]'' was in development planned to release in 2027. He also confirmed that a [[Doctor Doom]] film was in development alongside a film called ''[[The Mutants (2025 film)|The Mutants]]''. The Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU) films are a series of American superhero films produced by Mob Productions based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics, Mob Comics, and DC Comics. The MCU is the shared universe in which all of the films are set. The films have been in production since 2019, and in that time Mob Productions have multiple films in various stages of development.

Freddie Goodwin has produced every film in the series alongside Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool and Deadpool II.

Mob Productions releases its films in groups called "Phases" which all are distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The first film is Deadpool (2024), The Flash (2024), Bart and X.S (2024), Iron Man (2025), and Z Justice (2025) belong to Phase One. Phase Two will feature The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force (2025), Superman: Legacy of Hope (2026), Thor (2026) and will conclude with Harbingers (2026). Phase Three will feature Blade (2027), Harbingers: Dimension X (2027), Captain America: The First Hero (2027), Fantastic Four (2028), and will conclude with Harbingers: Endgame (2028). The first three Phases are collectively known as "The Chaos Saga".

The following three Phases are collectively known as "The Multiversal Saga" which begins with Deadpool II (2029), continues with The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force: The Birth of Inertia (2030), Infinity War Part I (2030), The Dangerous X-Men – Part One (2030), The Dangerous X-Men – Part Two (2031), and the final film of Phase Four being Infinity War Part II (2032).

Development

Films and Disney+ series

By 2007, Mob Productions was planning to produce its own films independently and distribute them through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures,[1] concurrently SOI Studios, a company who already produced three films, began planning a shared universe and announced the "SOIverse",[2] which would feature eight films before being complete, however SOI Studios failed to release the final three films due to agreements with companies who gave budget for the films.[3] In an attempt to save the SOIverse, SOI Studios worked with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures,[4][5] who at the time, worked with Mob Productions, who had a similar idea and had SOI Studios CEO Jackson Greene meet up with Freddie Goodwin.[6] Goodwin agreed to make two of the three films. He only requested that the final film, which was retitled to Deadpool II (2029) would be part of the then-upcoming Mob Cinematic Universe.[7][8][9] SOI Studios agreed and began work.[10]

By September 2012, Goodwin was in talks with Warner Bros. and Mob Productions in merging the two companies to create television and films under one brand name.[11][12] The deal was delayed multiple times because of agreement differences with both presidents of the two companies.[13] During the April 2013 public online presentation, Goodwin announced he had been working hard with the other company to come to a good deal.[14][15]

In June 2016, it was pubically announced that SOI Studios would merge with Mob Productions with Goodwin retaining the role of president.[16][17][18][19] In 2018, multiple leaks had revealed a Deadpool, The Flash, and Iron Man film projects.[20][21] Goodwin pubically confirmed the films and stated the three films will all be part of "Phase One".[21][22][23][24][25]

In 2020, Ryan Reynolds was announced to reprise his role as as Wade Wilson with other cast members from Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).[26][27] Goodwin stated that the film would feature different aspects of the first two films that Reynolds had made and turn the material into MA15+ material,[28] feeling the need to create something that isn't R18+ right away.[29][30][31]

During the development of Deadpool (2018), Goodwin confirmed that a sequel for The Flash (2024) that is planned to be released in a later phase.[32][33] At the time, the film was expected to be released in the same Phase,[34] similarly how Marvel released two Iron Man films in a single phase.[35] Goodwin confirmed that they are developing a Iron Man film, which would lead into events that may happen in a future film.[36][37]

During production on Deadpool 2 (2018), a reboot for the MCU was being planned by Mob Productions with Goodwin attached to write the screenplay.[38] In June 2021, Reynolds was confirmed to be reprising his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the film.[39] Development on the first film was mixed with a potential second film as confirmed in June 2022.[40] By then, Goodwin announced he has worked on every project in the MCU and will focus entirely on the future of the franchise.[41] In December 2019, after the release of Fox's Deadpool 2, Goodwin began work on a new Deadpool franchise to have Ryan Reynolds star in which will reboot the films.[42] In February 2020, Reynolds agreed to do the film, as long as he produced it alongside Goodwin.[43]

In July 2023, Goodwin took the stage at SDCC to announce future projects for the MCU.[44][45] He stated that Phase One would not have more films, though later announced that Fantastic Four, would release in 2025 as part of Phase One, and will set up the Doctor Doom film coming in Phase Three. Goodwin announced more films including Blade, a project related to Spider-Man, and a film adapting the Infinity War storyline from the Marvel Comics.[46] In September 2023, Goodwin announced two films titled Infinity War Part I and Infinity War Part II, respectively for a undetermined release date.[47][48][49][50][51]

The films that were announced in 2023's SDCC were confirmed to be part of a greater plan Goodwin confirmed, and stated they had begun developing Fantastic Four, before Deadpool and The Flash, which they originally planned to be released during Phase Two.[52][53][54] He confirmed that the team were excited to release the film and were unsure if they should release the film as early as it is coming.[55] Around the same time, Goodwin announced X-Men vs. The Avengers, but later cancelled the film due to issues regarding the timeline and how the films would fit in the story.[56][57]

Development on a film based on the DC character the Flash began in the late 1980s when Warner Bros. Pictures hired comic book writer Jeph Loeb to write a screenplay.[58] Warner Bros. hired David S. Goyer to write, direct, and produce a new version of The Flash in December 2004 after he impressed them with his script for Batman Begins (2005). Goyer approached Ryan Reynolds to portray Wally West / The Flash after working with him on the Marvel Comics-based film Blade: Trinity (2004) and intended to have the character Barry Allen appear in a supporting role.[59][60] Goyer was influenced for the film's tone by Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the Flash comic book runs by Mike Baron, Mark Waid and Geoff Johns.[61] By early February 2007, Goyer left the project over creative differences with the studio, and Shawn Levy was hired to direct and oversee the writing of a new draft written by Chris Brancato, which used elements from Goyer's script. Later that month, Warner Bros. announced the development of a Justice League film, with Michelle and Kieran Mulroney writing the screenplay.[62][63] George Miller signed on to direct the film, titled Justice League: Mortal, in September, with Adam Brody cast as the Flash.[64][65] It was envisioned as the start of a franchise with planned sequels and spin-offs, including the Flash film.[66][67]

Levy left The Flash in October 2007 because of scheduling conflicts with Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009).[68] David Dobkin took over as director and began developing the film as a spin-off from Justice League: Mortal, with a focus on Wally West. Craig Wright was writing a script for the film the next month, before Justice League: Mortal was canceled and Warner Bros. set a 2008 release for The Flash. Further development was delayed by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.[69][70] Charles Roven joined the project as a producer by July 2009, with Geoff Johns consulting and writing a film treatment that Dan Mazeau adapted into a screenplay.[71] In October, Roven said the studio was not confident enough in their take to green-light the film, though Mazeau disputed this and said the film was moving forward as planned. In June 2010, Green Lantern (2011) writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim were hired to write a new treatment for The Flash based on a recent comics run by Johns that featured Barry Allen. However, Mob Productions took matters into their own hands and made changes to the screenplay to fit into their own narrative for the MCU.[72][73]

After the critical and commercial failure of the 2015 film Fantastic Four, co-written and directed by Josh Trank and based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, 20th Century Fox began looking at new directions to take the franchise. Having also produced two earlier Fantastic Four films directed by Tim Story a decade prior, the studio did not want to just make another Fantastic Four film.[74] By June 2017, Seth Grahame-Smith was writing a new film that would shift focus to Franklin and Valeria Richards, the children of original Fantastic Four leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Taking inspiration from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic books, the screenplay included original Fantastic Four members the Thing and the Human Torch, and was described as kid-centric with a tone closer to The Incredibles (2004) than Trank's darker film.[75] The basis of the screenplay came from a separate script that Carter Blanchard had adapted from the children's book Kindergarten Heroes by Mark Millar. Millar previously consulted with Fox on their Marvel-based films.[76] In July, Noah Hawley, who had created the Marvel Television series Legion, was hired to develop a separate film focused on Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four's primary antagonist.[74] The Walt Disney Company officially acquired 21st Century Fox in March 2019 and gained the film rights for the Marvel Comics characters that Fox controlled, including the Fantastic Four, for its subsidiary Marvel Studios.[77][78] The Marvel-based films that Fox had been developing were placed "on hold".[79]

New films were announced on February 18, 2024, those films being Captain America: The First Hero and Fantastic Four which will all be part of Phase Three.[80][81] Along with the film announcements, Goodwin pubically announced that the Doctor Doom film has been delayed indefinitely.[82][83] In June 2024, Goodwin announced that the company was losing lots of employees' though confirmed the films and other projects that are coming won't be delayed or recieve any changes in any way.[84][85]

In June 2019, Goodwin, the visionary leader at Mob Productions, strategically outlined a robust expansion plan involving the development of six additional Phases following the conclusion of Phase Three.[86][87][88] This expansive roadmap showcased a detailed and structured vision, designed to further evolve and enrich their cinematic universe over the coming years.[89][90]

On February 18, 2024, Mob Productions made a significant announcement indicating the initiation of Phase Four, set to commence in July 2025.[91][92] The very next day, additional details were unveiled, introducing a significant change in their content distribution model. Unlike the previous approach of monthly releases, Goodwin revealed that the new schedule would alternate between television series and films. Specifically, he confirmed a pattern that would follow a sequence of film, series, film, series, thereby establishing a new rhythm for their storytelling across various media platforms.[93][94][95][96][97][98]

During a comprehensive presentation in April 2024, Goodwin revealed several ambitious projects slated for release on Disney+. The lineup began with a television series titled "Ajax," focusing on the backstory of the villain Francis Freeman/Ajax, a character best known from his antagonistic role in the Deadpool series. Goodwin detailed that the series would consist of four episodes, designed to bridge the narrative to "Deadpool II."[99] He confirmed that "Ajax" was scheduled for a premiere on July 10, 2025, with episodes releasing on a weekly basis.[100] Following this, he announced "Impulsion," a 10-episode series aimed at setting the stage for the film "The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force: The Birth of Inertia."[101] This series was planned for a November 2025 release, with two episodes being released each week. Additionally, Goodwin teased the release of another series titled "Moonknight,"[102] set for 2026, and hinted at a fourth series, details of which would be revealed early in 2025. He also highlighted an upcoming X-Men film, which would be released in two parts during Phase Four.[103] Regarding the "Infinity War" films, he noted their role in concluding one narrative arc while simultaneously setting up the events of Phase Five.[104]

Goodwin delved deeper into the transformative changes in the narrative approach that Mob Productions was set to adopt with the forthcoming "Multiversal Saga." Diverging from previous sagas, which typically followed a single, continuous storyline, the "Multiversal Saga" was designed to comprise multiple, distinct narratives across each phase. Goodwin emphasized that while these narratives would vary, each would unmistakably belong to the broader MCU fabric, marked by its unique thematic and character linkages. This innovative structure was intended to enhance the narrative richness and allow for a more varied exploration of the universe's dimensions and characters.

Furthermore, Goodwin openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the preceding "Chaos Saga." He critiqued it for its lack of originality and the excitement that fans had come to expect from Mob Productions' ventures. Goodwin pointed out that the "Chaos Saga" had failed to captivate audiences in the way that other competing franchises had achieved. He noted a significant shortfall in narrative depth and audience engagement, which he attributed to its predictable plotlines and underdeveloped character arcs. This reflection was part of a broader critique of the saga’s failure to innovate within the established framework of serialized cinematic storytelling, a domain where other companies had made notable advancements and received commendation.

In light of these reflections, Goodwin was motivated to steer the new saga towards uncharted narrative territories, aiming to infuse the upcoming phases with a fresh dynamism and complexity. This approach was expected not only to renew audience interest but also to set a higher standard of creativity and innovation within the genre, ensuring that each phase of the "Multiversal Saga" would offer a unique and engaging cinematic experience. This strategic pivot was seen as essential for maintaining the relevance and vibrancy of the MCU as it expanded further into its universe with new characters and storylines.

Reflecting on the planning stages, Goodwin recalled that as early as 2019, the idea of interspersing television series into the release schedule had been considered. This was part of a strategic approach to content dissemination that predated most of their current plans. He addressed potential concerns regarding the volume of content, asserting that Mob Productions would only delay projects if absolutely necessary. During discussions about the future of the "Untitled Iron Man Sequel," he revealed that it was under consideration for either delay or cancellation due to these strategic evaluations.

Regarding the structure of Phase Four, Goodwin noted that all upcoming series would be capped at six episodes, with the exception of "Moonknight," which would feature 10 episodes. He clarified that future Phases would not include more than three television series unless the duration of a Phase extended beyond two years.

By June 2024, Goodwin had meticulously planned the narratives through to 2031, detailing the story arcs up to the end of Phase Nine. He outlined the closure of Phase Three in 2025 and noted that Phase Six would be notably longer than previous phases, beginning shortly after the conclusion of Phase Five. The "Multiversal Saga," officially named in September 2024, was designed to explore the multiverse within the MCU extensively.

In 2026, Goodwin declared an intentional slowdown in film production, reducing the annual release from three to two films, with this change to be implemented post-Phase Five. He explained that Phase Six would be the longest, partly due to this reduced rate of film releases, allowing for a more expanded and explorative approach to storytelling within the franchise.

By March 2012, SOI Studios intended to produce films to be released in his cinematic universe idea inspired greatly by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. SOI Studios president Freddie Goodwin began to plan a full slate of films to include a "chapter" of his overall story idea, which he had planned to be in a film. However, he decided the story would be told better through a dozen films through different phases.

2029 onwards

Goodwin further addressed significant changes in the narrative approach of the franchise, introducing the "Multiversal Saga." This new saga would not adhere to a single storyline but instead, each phase would encapsulate distinct narratives, all identifiable as part of the MCU. He expressed his disappointment with the previous "Chaos Saga," criticizing its perceived lack of originality and excitement, noting that it fell short of the narrative depth and engagement achieved by similar formats in other productions by other companies.

Theatrical disttribution

The Chaos Saga

The first saga is "The Chaos Saga" and features a grand total of 14 films.[125] The first film and first installment of Phase One, Deadpool was released on February 8, 2024 to all states at the same time.[126] The second film and second installment of Phase One, The Flash, was released on July 28, 2024.[127] The third film and third installment of Phase One, Bart and X.S, was released on November 28, 2024.[128] The fourth film and fourth installment of Phase One, Iron Man, was released on April 22, 2025.[129] The fifth film and fifth and final installment of Phase One, Justice Z, was released on June 10, 2025.[130][131][132][133][134][135][136]

The sixth film and first installment of Phase Two, The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force, was released on October 28, 2025,[137] the seventh film and second installment of Phase Two, Superman: Legacy of Hope, was released on February 22, 2026.[138] The eighth film and third installment of Phase Two, Thor, was released on June 16, 2026.[139] The ninth film and fourth and final installment of Phase Two, Harbingers, was released on October 19, 2026.[140][141][142][143][144]

The tenth film and first installment of Phase Three, Blade, was released on May 12, 2027,[145] the eleventh film and second installment of Phase Three, Harbingers: Dimension X, was released on August 24, 2027,[146] the twelth film and third installment of Phase Three, Captain America: The First Hero, was released on December 5, 2027,[147] the thirteenth film and fourth installment of Phase Three, Fantastic Four, was released on April 24, 2028.[148] The fourteenth film and final installment of Phase Three and "The Chaos Saga", Harbingers: Endgame, was released on June 20, 2028.[149][150]

The second saga is "The Multiversal Saga" and will feature more than 20 projects alongside six television series seasons.[151][152][153][154]

The fifteenth film and first installment of Phase Four, Deadpool II, was released on September 23, 2029. The sixteenth film and second installment of Phase Four is The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force: The Birth of Inertia, scheduled to be released on February 18, 2030. The seventeenth film and third installment of Phase Four is Infinity War Part I, scheduled to be released on April 10, 2030. The eighteenth film and fourth installment of Phase Four is The Dangerous X-Men – Part One, scheduled to be released on August 20, 2030. The ninteenth film and fifth installment of Phase Four is The Dangerous X-Men – Part Two, scheduled to be released on September 22, 2031. The twentieth film and eighth and final installment of Phase Four is Infinity War Part II, scheduled to be released on April 18, 2032.

Disney+ releases

The Chaos Saga

All films from Phase One became available on Disney+ 6 weeks after they finish their theatrical run.[155] Deadpool became available on March 21, 2024.[156] The Flash became available on September 8, 2024.[157] Bart and X.S became available on January 9, 2025.[158] Iron Man became available on June 3, 2025.[159] Justice Z became available on July 22, 2025.[160]

Starting from Phase Two, each film became available on Disney+ 8 weeks after their theatrical run.[161][162] The Flash and the Multiverse of the Speed Force became available on December 23, 2025.[163] Superman: Legacy of Hope became available on April 19, 2026.[164] Thor became available on August 11, 2026.[165] Harbingers became available on December 14, 2026.[166][167]

The first film of Phase Three, Blade became available on July 7, 2027.[168] Harbingers: Dimension X became available on October 19, 2027.[169] Captain America: The First Hero became available on January 30, 2028.[170] Fantastic Four became available on June 19, 2028.[171] Harbingers: Endgame became available nine weeks later on August 22, 2028.[172][173]

The Multiversal Saga

All films from Phase Four through to Phase Six will be released 4 weeks after their theatrical run. Deadpool II became available on October 21, 2029.

Home media & blu-ray

Each film in the Mob Cinematic Universe can be purchased in multiple formats including blu-ray and 4K Resolution. All films were available at local stores or are able to be purchased online for a better price.

Unlike the release schedule of a streaming service, Mob Productions didn't release films soon after they left cinemas. Instead, six weeks following the conclusion of a phase, they'd release a bundle for a set price ($90). The Mob–CU: Phase One Bundle was released on July 22, 2025. The Mob–CU: Phase Two Bundle was released on November 30, 2026. The Mob–CU: Phase Three Bundle was released on August 1, 2028.

This format was both praised and disliked from the community. The positive reviews praised the pricing and that all the films of that specific phase were all on one singler disk, whilst a more expensive version would feature a disk for all films, priced at $120 instead of $90. Though, with the Phase Two and Phase Three bundles, the option with more disks wwas cheaper than the single disk option. The negative backlash though criticised the expensive price to purchase the films on disk and felt that was a way to increase Disney+ subscriptions. Some even refused felt that the single-disk option was slow and very bad to navigate.

Accolades and critism

The films of the Mob Cinematic Universe have been nominated for numerous awards. However, it has caused the creation of hundreds of memes. The franchise has been given negative reviews for being too much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Potential/Cancelled projects

These projects were in development as films from Mob Productions before being either cancelled:[188][189][190]

  • Doctor Doom: A film that focuses on the character on the same name. Goodwin pubically announced that the Doctor Doom film has been delayed indefinitely on February 18, 2024.[82][191][192][193][83]

Upcoming crossover with The Boys universe

Following a meeting between Sony Pictures and Mob Productions in 2025,[194][195] Goodwin noted that they had to work alone without any producer or development teams coming in from other franchises.[196] Goodwin said he felt it would be a "bad" choice to have writers and producers make something that should be in the hands of people who have helped make the Mob Cinematic Universe what it is today.[196] Goodwin confirmed a crossover is possible as long as other party [Sony] is willing to give them the rights to use their property.[197] In a similar call with Sony, Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, stated he didn't want to have his television series be worked on by anyone without his part in development.[198][199][200][201] Discussions for the crossover were placed on hold due to the ongoing disagreements.[202]

By March 2026, the discussions had begun again and both parties continued to have disagreements. Reynolds approached Goodwin and revealed he had three more films planned to produce for the MCU and planned to cancel them if Goodwin didn't let Kripke produce and write the films within the MCU.[203][204] These additional discussions lasted until June 2026.[205][206] Finally, by November 2026, Goodwin agreed to the plan and deal because of the need of keeping the character Deadpool within the MCU.[207][208][209]

In December 2026, Goodwin announced a new film that features the Avengers, Justice League, X-Men, and Harbingers is in development, and will incorperate the characters from The Boys into the MCU.[210][211] Goodwin cited that the idea is very similar to that of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), in which characters from other universes appear in the MCU and leave at the end of the film.[212][213]
