Ajax is an American television miniseries developed by Michael Green, James Mangold, Freddie Goodwin for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. It will be the first television series in the Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by both Mob Productions and Epic Vision Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. It follows Wolverine as he becomes the superhero he is and must overcome various struggles to meet back up with an old friend.

Ajax is scheduled to be released on Disney+ on December 17, 2024, with a total of 4 episodes, and is intended to be part of Phase One of the MCU.

Cast and characters

• Ed Skrein as Francis Freeman / Ajax: A Weapon X enforcer turned rogue operative, Ajax resurfaces years after his defeat, consumed by a need to reclaim control over his pain-free existence and settle his unfinished business with Deadpool.
• Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool: Still unkillable, still unhinged. Wade’s chaotic antics mask unresolved trauma and a complicated obsession with Ajax, whom he goads into a rematch using equal parts trolling, violence, and psychological warfare.
• Tanner Buchanan as Tim Drake: Reprising his role from Impulse, Tim monitors Deadpool’s escalating violence, acting as the only grounded figure trying — and failing — to stop the inevitable.
• Dichen Lachman as Ren: A black-market mutant information broker who becomes collateral damage in the crossfire, targeted by both Ajax and Deadpool for her knowledge of buried Weapon X files.
• Milo Ventimiglia as Swift: A former hacker for post-Weapon X factions, Swift holds key intel on Deadpool’s last movements, making him Ajax’s first target in his global manhunt.
• Dylan O'Brien as Velocity (hallucination only): A ghostly manifestation of Wade in Ajax’s mind — cocky, cruel, and untethered from reality — representing the version of himself Ajax refuses to become.

• CCH Pounder as Dr. Hadley: A retired Weapon X neurologist Ajax seeks out for answers about his returning sensations, who instead forces him to confront that his numbness was never emotional immunity — just fear in disguise.

As Marc’s alternate personas — including cab driver Jake Lockley — begin asserting themselves, the boundaries between reality and delusion collapse. Flashbacks reveal Marc’s mysterious resurrection in Egypt after being betrayed on a mission. The voice of Khonshu, an ancient lunar deity, haunts him nightly, claiming to have saved Marc’s life in exchange for eternal servitude. As his mental condition worsens, Marc discovers a recording device with a voice he doesn't recognize and awakens bloodied in unfamiliar places. A therapist’s note in his pocket leads nowhere, and a mirror in his apartment reflects different versions of himself. The episode ends with Marc staring at a shattered reflection of the moon, each shard showing a different face — none of which he trusts.

A masked imposter calling himself “The Avatar Reborn” emerges, claiming to act in Khonshu’s name. Marc is lured into a trap by the Cult of Khonshu, a splinter group that sees him as a heretic. During a ritual sacrifice attempt, Marc experiences a vivid psychological breakdown, visualized as a courtroom where each of his personas accuses him of failure. Intercut with surreal imagery and past trauma, the trial pushes him toward full dissociation. Khonshu interrupts the vision and teleports Marc to a remote desert, burned and delirious. As he struggles through the heat, he finds a voice recording in his coat repeating the phrase: “This isn’t your first reset.” Haunted by visions of Egypt and alternate versions of himself, Marc questions whether his divine patron is his savior or jailer.

Marc returns to New York and establishes a safe haven for victims of metahuman and cult-related violence called The Midnight Mission. While Jake Lockley gathers intel from the streets, Marc uncovers a connection between recent disappearances and a group called the Structure, rumored to be reviving Weapon X-era enhancements. His violent assault on a trafficking outpost reveals experimental data referencing the Omega Strain. Steven Grant faces a legal challenge claiming his identity is fabricated, further unraveling Marc’s grip on reality. A homeless man claiming to be Anubis warns Marc that judgment, not justice, is his true role. Khonshu’s voice grows more erratic and threatening, speaking in riddles about “cycles” and “blood moons.” Marc’s sanctuary becomes a refuge for society’s forgotten, but also a magnet for danger. He begins waking up with injuries he doesn’t remember inflicting. Carvings beneath a museum tomb suggest that his resurrection might have been one of many — and that something ancient is using Marc to breach reality.

Marc awakens in a sterile psychiatric facility after a violent arrest, where he is told that Moonknight, Khonshu, and even Steven Grant are inventions of his fractured mind. His doctor, Emmett, closely resembles the Egyptian goddess Ammit, who urges Marc to “surrender his delusions.” The facility cycles between comforting routine and surreal horror, with mirrors refusing to reflect and clocks moving backward. Moonknight is seen fighting in the outside world, suggesting Marc may be trapped in a psychic construct. Khonshu appears as a silent, looming figure, no longer speaking but always watching. In his room, Marc uncovers hidden glyphs behind a canvas painting, identical to markings he saw in Cairo. Realizing the institution is a façade, Marc fakes compliance and uses his alternate identities to overrun the mental system. The climax erupts in a burst of moonlight as the illusion shatters and Marc regains consciousness in his sanctuary — blood-soaked, surrounded by unconscious cult members. One word is scrawled in ash across the wall: “RESURRECTED.”

Moonknight begins eliminating leaders of the Hand of the First Moon, a militant cult executing “non-divine” enhanced individuals. Their campaign is backed by global elites seeking to manipulate belief through fear and manipulation of ancient myths. Marc uncovers that his own death in Egypt was orchestrated by a CIA hit squad, not insurgents, and that Khonshu’s resurrection may have been an act of rebellion against the human order. Flashbacks reveal mercenary missions and betrayals, casting doubt on every memory he holds. Marc crafts a new identity as a disruptive force, targeting belief itself. A brutal assault on a subterranean cult base ends with Moonknight sparing an imposter avatar — only for Khonshu to kill him remotely. As Marc processes the futility of mercy under divine rule, he begins questioning whether Khonshu is losing control or consolidating it. The Midnight Mission becomes increasingly populated by terrified civilians who view Moonknight as either savior or omen. Marc spends the night lighting candles for every life he’s taken — the room glows with dozens.

As lunar anomalies disrupt satellite systems and water patterns worldwide, whispers spread that Moonknight may be the source. A Vatican scholar warns him that Khonshu may not be divine, but a psychic parasite from before linear time. The Midnight Mission reaches capacity as refugees and zealots flood its gates. Jake Lockley disappears entirely. Marc loses time for nearly a week, returning to find he’s killed in his own name. A final confrontation on the Manhattan Bridge pits Marc against a corrupted Moonknight — a being forged from Marc’s unresolved fury and survivor's guilt. He defeats it by embracing his full fractured identity, acknowledging every face as real. The cults dissolve in confusion as their symbols lose power. Marc shuts down the Mission and disappears into the streets without his armor. In the final shot, he walks into the snow, cloak tucked beneath civilian clothes — but the faint shimmer of silver glints at his wrist. Khonshu whispers one final word: “Soon.”
