Development on a sequel to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Man of Steel (2013) began by October 2014, with Henry Cavill set to reprise his role as Superman. Plans changed after the troubled production of Justice League (2017) and the Man of Steel sequel was no longer moving forward by May 2020. Gunn began work on a new Superman film around August 2022. In October, he became co-CEO of DC Studios with producer Peter Safran and they began work on a new DC Universe. Gunn was revealed to be writing the film in December. The title Superman: Legacy was announced the next month, Gunn was confirmed to be directing in March 2023, and Corenswet and Brosnahan were cast that June. The subtitle was dropped by the end of February 2024, when filming began in Svalbard, Norway. Production primarily took place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with location filming around Georgia and Ohio. Filming wrapped in July. The film takes inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among others.
Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on June 17, 2026, and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 26. It is the first film of the DCCU's Chapter One: Crisis. Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow received critical acclaim, with praise directed at its darker tone, action sequences, visual effects, and writing. However, some critics noted that the film at times felt more like a "setup" for future installments. It grossed $892 million worldwide against a budget of $170 million, becoming a major box-office success and the highest-grossing Superman film to date. A sequel is in development.

After stopping a catastrophic volcanic eruption in Peru, Superman discovers an anomalous energy signal deep beneath the Andes: a breach in the Phantom Zone. Investigating the site, he is ambushed by Kryptonian war remnants and barely escapes. Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence, led by Amanda Waller and General Sam Lane, begins tracking increased metahuman activity and debates contingency plans for Superman. Their concerns escalate when General Dru-Zod—once a trusted military leader on Krypton—emerges from the Phantom Zone alongside a squad of militant Kryptonian followers. Zod announces his intent to rebuild Krypton on Earth by force, using captured genetic codices and Earth’s yellow sun to accelerate the rebirth of Kryptonian culture.

Plot
Zod confronts Clark, urging him to abandon his human identity and join the cause to resurrect Krypton. He reveals that the codex Jor-El implanted within Kal-El as an infant contains the collective genome of the Kryptonian race. Clark is torn, burdened by the knowledge that he carries his species’ last hope for survival. Seeking guidance, Clark returns to the Fortress of Solitude, where a restored Jor-El AI reveals a deeper truth: Krypton’s fall was partly due to Zod’s authoritarian regime, and Jor-El sent Kal-El to offer Krypton’s ideals a new beginning, not a repeated one.
Clark Kent lives a quiet life in Metropolis, using his powers covertly to help those in need. His peaceful existence is disrupted when a Kryptonian beacon activates in orbit, triggering a worldwide incident and alerting a dangerous figure from his past. General Dru-Zod, a war-hardened survivor of Krypton, emerges from the Phantom Zone and declares that Earth's destiny is to become the next Krypton—whether humanity agrees or not.

As global panic sets in, Clark is forced to reveal his powers to the world after saving thousands during a disaster triggered by Zod’s arrival. Public opinion turns from awe to fear, with governments questioning whether Superman is protector or threat. Meanwhile, Lois Lane investigates Zod’s past and uncovers classified records linking LexCorp to ancient Kryptonian tech.
As Zod launches an orbital terraforming device above Metropolis to begin reshaping Earth’s atmosphere, Superman appeals to the Justice Gang—Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern—for help. During a high-altitude battle, Superman disables the device, but Zod retaliates by unleashing a Phantom Zone bomb, trapping parts of the city in extradimensional stasis. With time running out, Clark is forced to make a devastating choice: surrender the codex or watch the Earth be erased. Refusing to allow either future, he devises a risky plan to collapse the Phantom rift and sever Zod’s access to the dimension.

Clark seeks answers at the Fortress of Solitude, where he confronts a projection of his father, Jor-El. Haunted by the legacy of Krypton’s downfall, Clark returns to face Zod and chooses to defend Earth, not as a god, but as one of its own. The final battle spans continents, culminating in Superman using intelligence and restraint—rather than brute force—to return Zod to the Phantom Zone.
In a brutal final confrontation in the ruins of a torn Metropolis, Superman battles Zod while the Justice Gang attempts to stabilize the dimensional rift. Lois, working with Jimmy Olsen and an imprisoned Kryptonian defector named Faora, reveals to the world that Zod’s plan would eradicate all human life within a generation. Superman ultimately defeats Zod by triggering a feedback loop in the rift reactor, banishing Zod and his army back into the Phantom Zone—but not before Zod warns that "he is only the beginning."

In the aftermath, Superman is now a global figure. Some revere him, others fear him. But Clark makes his choice clear: he will stand with humanity, no matter the cost.
The film ends with Superman injured but vindicated, his reputation restored in the eyes of the public. The codex is safely hidden once again, and Clark finally accepts that he is both human and Kryptonian—not a god, not a weapon, but a guardian. In the closing scene, Amanda Waller recovers a sliver of Phantom Zone tech from the wreckage, and Faora stares into the sky, whispering that others will come.

Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow is a 2026 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Produced by DC Studios under its Elseworlds division and distributed by Warner Bros. The film is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and written by Sara Hayes, with David Corenswet starring as Clark Kent / Superman. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Richard Armitage as General Zod, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Production

Following the restructuring of the DC Cinematic Universe under Freddie Goodwin, Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow was chosen as the franchise’s inaugural film. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga was confirmed in September 2024, with the intention to deliver a grounded, mythic interpretation of Superman’s internal conflict.

Principal photography began in March 2025 in Vancouver, with additional location shoots in Iceland, Morocco, and Metropolis-inspired sets built in Chicago. Visual effects were handled by Weta Digital and ILM, with a focus on blending practical action and minimal CGI clutter.

Benjamin Wallfisch composed the score, with a new Superman theme introduced to distance the film from previous DCEU entries.

Release

The film was released theatrically on June 26, 2026, in the United States and internationally. It debuted in premium formats including IMAX and Dolby Cinema. The first trailer was released in January 2026 and generated over 60 million views within 72 hours.

Sequel and Future

A sequel is currently in development. The mid-credits scene teasing a LexCorp executive salvaging Phantom tech is expected to lead into future events in the DCCU's Crisis chapter, which includes upcoming titles such as The Brave and the Bold and Justice League: Infinite.
