Steve x Alex: The Dark Dynasty is an upcoming animated superhero film being directed by Shawn Levy and written by Levy and Freddie Goodwin. Produced by Mob Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it will be the first installment in the Steve & Alex franchise and the first film in the Craftinverse and sixth film overall in the Minecraft film series. It will be the first episode of the nine episode series. The film features Jack Black and Amy Poehler as Steve Stonecutter and Alex Stonecutter, respectively.
Minecraft: The Dark Dynasty is a third-person action-adventure video game with a strong narrative focus, diverging from the traditional sandbox gameplay of the main series. It features an over-the-shoulder free camera, a departure from the iconic first-person perspective, and is presented in a continuous shot with no camera cuts or loading screens during play. Unlike the mainline Minecraft titles, which emphasize open-ended exploration and building, The Dark Dynasty is a single-player, story-driven experience. Creative director Helena Wren described its structure as "open, but not an open world"—players can freely explore several large regions, but the main narrative guides progression. Due to its semi-open format, a fast travel system is unlocked later in the game. Swimming remains possible, but players also craft and pilot boats to cross large bodies of water. Jumping is contextual and only possible at certain traversal points, such as cliff edges, vines, or rope bridges.

The story unfolds across hostile territories corrupted by the influence of the Wither Dynasty, with players facing reimagined mobs and entirely new enemies. These include shadow-bound creepers, crimson-eyed endermen, and elite Piglin Lords who serve as mini-bosses. Unique bosses—such as the Ender Colossus, the Warden Prime, and the Bone King—appear at key story beats. Optional "Legend Trials" allow players to hunt mythical creatures like the Lava Leviathan or the Sky Serpent to gain rare materials for advanced upgrades.
Development on the film began way back in 2014 with Goodwin looking to make a complete film franchise consisting of nine feature length films. Originally, the film title was going to be Steve x Alex: Guardians of the Overworld, however was later changed to Steve x Alex: The Dark Dynasty, a change Goodwin felt was perfect. It was produced by Mob Productions and Freddie Goodwin, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Levy. The film is set to be based in Diamond Hill Village and feature scenes set before any film before it. The film will finally touch base on how Steve and Alex originally met each other. Filming began in June 2019 and concluded in March 2020. However, the film was delayed four years because of poor quality and deemed unreleasable by Disney.

The player controls an original protagonist, navigating a blend of melee combat, environmental puzzle-solving, and light crafting. Instead of starting with basic wooden tools, players wield the Blade of the Overworld, a magical sword capable of both light and heavy attacks. It can be thrown to release an energy arc, then recalled instantly to the player’s hand. The blade interacts with the environment—powering Redstone contraptions, igniting TNT chains, freezing water flows—and can be upgraded with rare runes to unlock "Legendary Techniques," powerful cooldown-based abilities. A secondary tool, the Builder’s Gauntlet, lets players instantly place pre-crafted blocks during combat or traversal, enabling the creation of defensive walls, bridges, or spike traps in real time. Hand-to-hand combat is also integrated, alongside a collapsible shield that can cparry attacks or knock back enemies.
Steve x Alex: The Dark Dynasty is scheduled to be released on September 16, 2044.

Combat incorporates a "Resolve” meter—similar to the Rage mechanic in other action titles—which fills as enemies are defeated or damage is taken. When activated, the player unleashes a flurry of empowered strikes and temporary resistance to damage. Role-playing game (RPG) elements are also present; players gather crafting resources, mine rare ores, and salvage enemy gear to create or upgrade armor and weapons with unique perks. The game’s currency, Gilded Shards, is used for crafting and trading with NPC allies. Experience points (XP) unlock new combat skills, Gauntlet upgrades, and mobility abilities such as grappling hook swings or glider deployment.

The Dark Dynasty follows Steve and Alex as they fight a gret evil who begins destroying the Overworld.

Throughout the world, chests contain enchantments, rare crafting materials, and Gilded Shards. Special collectible items—Hearts of Gaia and Essence of the Nether—permanently increase the player’s maximum health and Resolve, respectively. These meters are replenished with health orbs and Resolve crystals dropped by enemies or found in the environment. Cooldowns replace traditional resource meters for special abilities, with the player encouraged to chain environmental interaction and weapon skills for maximum efficiency.

* Matt Doherty as Entity 303
Currently, two or more roles have been casted but aren't yet announced.

Certain story segments introduce an AI-controlled companion—Ayla, a skilled archer and survivor of the Dynasty purge—who assists in combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. One button is dedicated to issuing her contextual commands, such as targeting enemies with enchanted arrows or activating distant switches. Over the course of the game, Ayla gains new abilities, armor, and elemental arrow types, including explosive Redstone shots and spectral arrows that reveal hidden paths. Her special summons call forth spectral mobs—wolves to maul enemies, iron golems to hold choke points, or phantoms to harass flying foes.

During development, the team were aiming at a December 2040 release date. == Story ==
In March 2037, Goodwin was in talks with Disney about making a new series of films and decided to make them feel like the Star Wars' Skywalker Saga; with the episode numbering of each film. By June 2020, Disney greenlit the first two films and had Guardians of the Overworld begin development in 2021. Goodwin worked with Levy in previous films Minecraft One (2018), though the latter departed the project. Goodwin approached him and asked to work with him on Guardians of the Overworld to which he agreed to join the project. In September 2020, multiple reports stated the film would feature two Steve characters and be set decades before any film before it. In February 2021, Levy hinted at a film set in the past.

Setting and characters
Minecraft: The Dark Dynasty takes place in 2019, in the expansive and diverse Overworld of the Minecraft universe, where ancient forces long thought dormant have begun to stir. The world is experiencing a period of growing instability as deep dark corruption spreads through key settlements, threatening to overwhelm villages, cities, and trade routes. Dangerous biomes once considered safe have become hostile as mobs act under mysterious unified control. Legends speak of Wardens — colossal, blind guardians of the deep — returning in greater numbers than ever before. In the wake of these threats, skilled adventurers and defenders are needed to uncover the source of the corruption and stop its spread before the Overworld collapses into chaos.

The story centers on Steve Stonecutter, an experienced adventurer and master builder known for his resilience and resourcefulness. His journey takes him to Diamond Hill City, a prosperous settlement now rotting under the infestation of sculk. Alongside him is Derp, a sharp-witted and unconventional fighter with a talent for improvisation and deep knowledge of Overworld myths. Throughout their mission, they face a variety of hostile creatures, including Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, and the fearsome Warden.

The post-credits sequence introduces Alex Stonecutter, Steve’s younger sister, a skilled survivalist and explorer who operates independently from her brother but shares his drive to protect the innocent. Her arrival in Diamond Hill hints at a larger quest that will tie directly into the looming events of The Dark Dynasty. Supporting figures include the citizens of Diamond Hill, who rally under Steve’s leadership; wandering traders offering critical supplies and intelligence; and mysterious figures connected to the ancient forces driving the corruption, whose identities remain shrouded in secrecy at the story’s outset.

In addition to the main storyline, The Dark Dynasty features side content and hidden lore entries that expand on the deep dark’s origins, the powers of the Nether Star, and ancient Overworld civilizations lost to history. These elements lay the groundwork for a wider conflict that spans multiple regions and will test the limits of both Steve and Alex’s abilities.

Plot
In 2019, Steve Stonecutter arrives in Diamond Hill City and discovers that the place has been corrupted by the deep dark, and discovers that the cave next door has a Warden living within it. Steve meets up with his friend Derp and they battle and kill the Warden and use a Nether Star to enlighten the place to cure it from the corruption.

In 2019, Steve Stonecutter arrives in Diamond Hill City to find the once-thriving settlement overrun by sculk corruption seeping up from the deep dark below. Following tremors to the city’s edge, he discovers a massive cave system housing a fully awakened Warden. Steve reunites with his longtime friend Derp, who has been tracking the spread for weeks, and together they descend into the depths to eliminate the threat. After navigating collapsing ledges, triggering swarms of silverfish, and evading sculk sensors, they engage the Warden in a brutal battle. Combining Derp’s precision crossbow fire with Steve’s enchanted sword strikes, they kill the creature and recover a Nether Star from its lair. Returning to the city, Steve uses the Nether Star to power a beacon that burns away the sculk and restores Diamond Hill to its former state.

As the city begins to recover, Steve and Derp part ways, unaware that their actions have drawn new attention. In a post-credits scene, a hooded figure approaches the city gates at sunset. Pulling back her hood to reveal herself as Alex Stonecutter, Steve’s sister, she surveys the beacon’s glow and quietly remarks, “So it’s begun,” before stepping into the city.

Discussing the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, which saw the return of film rights to Minecraft and the other games for example Minecraft Dungeons (2020) and Minecraft Legends (2023), allowing Mob Productions to produce more films due to them being under Disney. Negotiations began with Freddie Goodwin in June 2019, after the acquisition was complete. A few weeks later, Goodwin was approached by Shawn Levy and he asked to direct a film if he chose to develop more films. He agreed and began work on Steve & Alex: Guardians of the Overworld. Due to issues with making a story and the Writers Strike 2039, the team had to delay the film until 2044, which was again delayed by Disney due to lack of quality in 20% of the film.

In September 2020, multiple reports stated the film would feature two Steve characters and be set decades before any film before it. In February 2021, Levy hinted at a film set in the past.

Goodwin and Levy pubically announced in May 2021 that Grant Gustin and Amy Poehler would reprise their roles in the film and they hoped for a 2024 release. In June 2022, Gustin mistakenly confirmed he had already finished half of his lines and revealed the title to be "Steve & Alex: Guardians of the Overworld". By September 2022, leaks reported that Jenna Ortega and Owen Wilson were set to reprise their roles, though Goodwin pubically debunked the rumors.

Shortly after the filming process was complete, Disney delayed the film until 2023 and ordered a remake of multiple scenes in order to make it releasable as the film was at that stage deemed "unreleasable". By 2023, the film had begun reshoots for 80% of the film, whilst only 20% of it was deemed unreleasable by Disney. Goodwin pubically confirmed he wanted to "rewrite the film" to ensure it worked and was better. He announced the film would lead into the real game's release in 2011. During the development, Goodwin left hints of Herobrine throughout the film, but pubically confirmed that Herobrine won't be in this new series of films.

Writing[edit | edit source]

Casting[edit | edit source]

Manu Bennett replaces James Earl Jones as Herobrine in the film. Reprising their roles from previous films, Grant Gustin as Steve Stonecutter, Amy Poehler as Alex Stonecutter, and Scott Menville as Derp, respectively. Matt Doherty returns in the film as Entity 303.
