Flashbacks reveal Cassian’s transformation during a desert conflict, where exposure to an irradiated solar reactor fused his body with nanites, granting him the ability to channel heat and light into catastrophic bursts of energy that consume him with every use. Tracking him to an abandoned power plant, Rei uncovers his mission to eliminate the architects of Helion—among them her former commanding officer. When Dr. Evelyn Korr, a surviving Helion scientist, transmits a cryptic signal promising to “stabilize the core,” Cassian traces her to the ruined heights of Astra Tower, where she has been experimenting on vagrants to recreate his condition. Korr reveals her intent to reforge Helion as a controllable weapon rather than a sentient system, sparking a catastrophic battle that tears through the tower. As she injects herself with an unstable derivative and mutates into a radiant skeletal entity radiating lethal gamma-light, Cassian channels his remaining energy to hurl her from the shattered structure, her body igniting as ultraviolet fire consumes the skyline. Cassian, meanwhile, is dying—his cells igniting faster than they heal, his body a furnace barely containing the power consuming it. Hunted through the ruined subway tunnels by Unit Kestrel, a kill team of irradiated supersoldiers fueled by synthetic blood, he annihilates them in a blinding heat surge before the last operative transmits his location to AetherCore Industries, the conglomerate that financed Project Helion. Within AetherCore, Director Marius Holt initiates Operation Sundiver, repurposing Helion fragments recovered from Dr. Korr’s remains into weaponized prototypes. His first subject, Delta, a child host infused with liquid-metal nanites, survives a gunshot through the skull. As Rei infiltrates the city morgue to examine a recovered Helion corpse, she finds its heart still beating—mechanical, rhythmic, alive.
