Development

In September 2022, Mob Productions renewed the series for a second season which was confirmed to have 10 episodes. In October 2022, Zendaya left the project due to personal reasons. The season was originally planned to release in 2023, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. By early 2023, Amy Poehler was cast as Alex Stonecutter. In discussing the events of the second season, showrunner Freddie Goodwin, announced he would be leaving the series after the second season and planned to leave the story open for the third season which would be developed by his friend named Jackster. During the second season, Goodwin announced he had planned for a 20 episode season, but scrapped the idea after feeling it was "too ambitious" for the type of series it is.

In reworking the story for the second season, Goodwin felt it would be a good idea to have it be set in the same time frame as the first season. He once again confirmed the season would be based off Squared Media material and would pay tribute to TechnoBlade in the fifth episode of the second season. When questioned upon the possible return of Herobrine, Goodwin pubically stated that Herobrine won't return at all for a long time since he's "dead". Goodwin ended answering the question by stating the team had a idea to have Herobrine back for one episode, but scrapped the idea due to it being too early for a villain to return in that fashion. Soon after, it was revealed that Warewolf, Null, and Entity 303 will appear at some point in the season.

In June 2024, Goodwin revealed the season would directly connect to the events that will occur in Agent Derp, that was moved up to release in September 2024.

Casting

On July 8, 2023, it was announced that Jack Black, Tom Holland, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks would return for their roles from the first season. In August 2023, Zendaya left the project due to personal reasons and the feeling of doing a single season within the series.

In September 2023, Amy Poehler was cast as Alex Stonecutter. Poehler announced that she is a big fan of the games concept and was excited to work on the television series; which she inadvertently confirmed the usage of Unreal Engine animating systems. By November 2023, Poehler revealed she had begun recording her lines for the character and felt it was a "huge task to get right enough so the voice change doesn't affect the character too much".

Unreal Engine

The use of the Unreal Engine was confirmed by Poehler in September 2023. Goodwin confirmed they used the Unreal Engine slightly for the finale of the first season and felt ready to use it for the entire second season. Goodwin uses the Unreal Engine to accomplish photorealistic animation for second season of Minecraft. They kept the 3D dimension blocked shapes of the game to keep the feeling of the game theme.
