The International Darts Federation (IDF) is a professional darts governing body established in 2005 to oversee and develop the sport globally, particularly outside the traditional UK-centric organizations. The IDF organizes a series of professional darts tournaments, including the flagship annual IDF World Championship, the Premier League, World Grand Prix, and various tour and normal ranking events. The federation maintains a comprehensive world ranking system known as the Order of Merit, which ranks players based on their performances in sanctioned events throughout the season.

History

Darts, while having a strong professional presence in the United Kingdom through organizations like the PDC and BDO, saw a need for an internationally focused body to grow the sport worldwide. The IDF was formed to unify competitive darts under a global banner, providing more opportunities for players outside the UK and expanding the sport’s reach.

The IDF launched its first World Championship in 2006, rapidly becoming a significant event attracting top talent globally. The federation established a season structure featuring multiple tiers of events: Majors, Premier events (including the World Championship, Premier League, and Grand Prix), Normal events, and Tour events. This tiered system allowed players of various skill levels to compete and progress through the ranks.

Since its inception, the IDF has fostered competitive darts growth in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, increasing television coverage and sponsorship deals internationally. The IDF’s Order of Merit system drives player qualification for premier events, with points awarded based on tournament finishes.

Major Competitions

  • IDF World Championship: The pinnacle event, held annually since 2006, featuring a knockout format with seeded players based on the Order of Merit. The tournament attracts the world’s best darts professionals and is broadcast internationally.
  • Premier League: A 16-week league competition involving the top eight ranked players battling weekly in knockout brackets. Points accrued determine qualifiers for the Premier League Finals Night.
  • World Grand Prix: An invitational major tournament featuring unique double-start and double-finish leg formats, challenging players’ versatility and strategy.
  • Grand Prix and other Majors: Key tournaments throughout the season offering significant ranking points and prize money, integral to the professional darts calendar.
  • Tour and Normal Events: A wide range of events across the year providing ranking points and competitive opportunities for rising stars and established players alike.

Order of Merit

The IDF Order of Merit is a dynamic ranking system updated after every tournament, awarding points based on player finishes. It determines eligibility and seedings for major events, with the top-ranked players invited to premier competitions. The Order of Merit encourages consistent performance across the season and is considered the definitive professional ranking in IDF-sanctioned darts.

Television Coverage

The IDF has secured broadcast agreements with multiple international sports networks, allowing coverage in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Its events are streamed live and supplemented by highlights and analysis programs, increasing the sport’s accessibility and fan engagement worldwide.

Player Development and Global Growth

The IDF supports global darts development through youth programs, women's darts series, and emerging market initiatives. It has contributed to the rise of new darts stars from non-traditional regions and promotes darts as an inclusive, global sport.

Notable Players

Since its founding, the IDF has been home to some of the most prominent players in the sport, including multiple-time World Champions and Premier League winners. Players like Luke Littler, Ethan Steel, Alex Brow, and others have made significant impacts under the IDF banner.
