ShooterofIO Zombies
ShooterofIO Zombies, also known as Zombies or originally as Operations in ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops (2023), is a recurring cooperative game mode in the ShooterofIO series. It is best known for being developed by Air Studios in collaboration with SOI Studios. The mode pits players against endless waves of undead enemies, with gameplay centered around surviving for as long as possible while gradually acquiring stronger weapons, abilities, and perks. Killing zombies grants the player points that can be spent on weapons, opening new areas of the map, and purchasing utilities.
The mode was first introduced in ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2024), which launched the ongoing Dark Aether Saga storyline. Prior to this, the series’ first game, ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops (2023), featured a precursor of the mode under the title "Operations". Since then, Zombies has become a staple of the franchise, appearing in multiple entries with unique maps, progression systems, and overarching narrative arcs.
Overview
Gameplay

Zombies is a co-op survival mode where up to four players must fend off increasingly difficult rounds of undead enemies. Players typically begin a match with a low-tier weapon (often a pistol or loadout gun of low rarity) and must accumulate points by killing zombies. These points are spent on unlocking new map areas, acquiring stronger weapons, and purchasing "Perk-a-Colas", which enhance player abilities.
Classic gameplay staples include the "Mystery Box", which gives players a random weapon, and the "Pack-a-Punch" machine, which upgrades weapons. Power-ups such as "Max Ammo", "Insta-Kill", "Double Points", and "Nuke" also appear at random. Later versions introduced meta-systems like Augments, which allow for permanent progression and additional abilities outside of matches.
Maps often feature easter eggs ranging from hidden songs to elaborate questlines that progress the storyline. Each new release typically adds its own Wonder Weapon, a powerful unique gun or tool tied to its map.
Setting
Zombies maps in the ShooterofIO series are set in diverse global and fantastical locations, often tied to the ongoing Dark Aether storyline. Settings range from jungles and palaces to rivers cutting through cities and entire collapsing towns. The overarching plot, known as the Dark Aether Saga, features characters such as Noah Mad, Samantha Voss, Jessica Carver, William Peck, and Edward Richtofen as they battle to prevent dimensional rifts from merging reality with the Dark Aether.
History
Creation and Modern Ops
The earliest form of Zombies was titled Operations, included in ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops (2023). This version acted as a prototype survival mode using existing multiplayer maps as arenas. While simple in scope, it established the core loop of surviving waves of undead while unlocking perks and upgrades.
Dark Warfare and the Dark Aether Saga
Zombies received its first fully-realized iteration in ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare (2024). This version introduced the Dark Aether Saga storyline and expanded mechanics. Two maps, "Undead Forest" and "Der Palace", launched with the game, followed by "Turm der Toten" (December 16, 2024), "Origins" (January 24, 2025), "Der River" (April 3, 2025), "Boomtown Zombies" (Season 04), and the final map "Foldpoint" (Season 05).
