| On his first full shift as a patrol officer, Kai Morrow is paired with training officer Lena Park and responds to routine calls, including a brief foot pursuit resulting in a narcotics arrest and a welfare check that leads to an elderly woman being transported for medical care and referred to Adult Protective Services. Later, Kai and Park respond to a robbery in progress at a corner market, where Sergeant Adam Cross establishes containment and conducts negotiations while Kai remains assigned to perimeter support and follows command instructions. The suspect ultimately surrenders and is taken into custody without injury, though another officer is later disciplined for arriving without authorization and escalating the situation. After completing his reports at the station, Kai returns to patrol and, near the end of the shift, discovers a homicide scene in an industrial alley involving a severed human arm and a blood-marked symbol, prompting a Code 3 response, the involvement of supervisors, and the scene being designated as a major case investigation. | |||||||

| Following the discovery of the alley homicide, Kai returns to patrol with Park as Major Crimes takes over the investigation and patrol units are instructed to limit their involvement to observation and reporting. A Code 2 call to a construction site leads Kai and Park to blood evidence and a carved symbol on a temporary plywood wall, prompting the site to be locked down and transferred to detectives, who identify the victim as missing worker Evan Ruiz and determine the killing was intentional. As detectives interview witnesses and uncover inconsistencies in the accounts of the foreman and cleanup crew, evidence begins to point toward former construction laborer Caleb Drake, who has a history of violent offenses and carving similar symbols, leading Major Crimes to quietly place him under surveillance. Meanwhile, Park allows Kai to take the lead on a minor theft call at a liquor store, which he resolves without arrest, reinforcing his measured approach to policing. Later, Kai observes Drake following their patrol unit and documents the encounter without escalation, a report that helps detectives establish Drake’s movements and contributes to his eventual arrest for Ruiz’s murder. After the case is closed, Kai receives understated recognition from Park and command for his documentation, before returning home to Emma and confronting the growing personal weight of the job despite the successful outcome. | |||||||
