Minecraft is a 2016 American adventure film based on the video game of the same name by Mojang Studios. Produced by Mob Productions, Mojang, and SOI Studios, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is being directed by Freddie Goodwin, from a screenplay written by Wilma Zimmerman, Benjamin Knowles, Homer Gutierrez and Myla Salazar. It is the first film in the Minecraft film series. It follows Steve and Alex as they battle in a war that is caused by Herobrine, Steve's biggest nemesis.

Plans for a Minecraft film adaption began in February 2014 when Markus Persson revealed that Mojang was in talks with Warner Bros. to develop the project. Several filmmakers, including Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney, were initially hired to direct, with several writers, such as Kieran and Michele Mulroney, Jason Fuchs, and Aaron and Adam Nee, attached. However, in the end, they decided to attach Freddie Goodwin in charge of the project. Filming began in 2015 and concluded in January 2016.

Minecraft premiered worldwide on June 10, 2016, and was released to the Mob Productions YouTube channel on June 10, 2017, the year following. The film recieved positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, humor, writing, and musical score. The film made $1.62 billion in its time in cinemas. The success of the film created a franchise, with the film being followed by Minecraft: Block Wars, which was released on December 12, 2019.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Steve Stonecutter wakes up in a empty file world that hasn't been fully generated yet. Suddenly, the world is generated quickly, and Steve drops to the surface. Steve meets Jerry, the wolf. Steve explores the world, and discovers a heap of animals that either live in the water, land, and sky. He becomes best friends with Jerry. Steve and Jerry play games with the bone, and then things begin to freeze, the sky turns dark, and a thunder storm appaers, mobs begin to spawn and Jerry gets scared. Many Zombies appear, Steve is given a shotgun by someone unknown, and Steve manages to kill the mobs.

After killing all the mobs, Steve looks into the lake to only find in his reflection, that he has glowing white eyes, but he really doesn't. Behind Steve, a dark black cloud appears near the higher point of the mountain, and it's revealed to be Null. Steve attempts to use the shotgun to kill Null, but Null destroys the shotgun, chases Steve into the forest, and kills Jerry. Steve uses that time and stabs Null, but Null just teleports away in a glitch effect.

Steve realises what happened and looks at Jerry, who has just passed away. Steve drops to his knees and mourns Jerry, and hosts a funeral for Jerry, gives him some water daily, and then suddenly "Jerry" returns to life.

In the Underworlds of Steve's dimension, a cube with a figure who looks like Steve, but isn't turns around to reveal glowing white eyes, revealing that fact that he is Herobrine.

Steve contacts Alex Stonecutter, who gets to Max and talks to Steve, they agree to meet up. While, Max is hesitant to allow Alex, as it's revealed Max is a really mean person and has been abusive to Alex. Back at the area with Steve, Steve prepares a fight, prepares a Diamond Sword, and walks towards a teleportation area. While, Alex prepares to meet up with Steve.

Steve teleports to the Hypixel lobby, where mobs spawn and raid. The lobby is completely destroyed. Steve is beat up by Entity 303 and sent back to his dimension. Steve, who wants to get payback, learns of the Underworlds, the home to Herobrine, Steve finds the area, destroys the cube, but it unleashes Herobrine's spirit, who bashes Steve, and almost kills him, but is distracted by Derp, a new character who loves to use fish as weapons.

Alex breaks Max's arm, and escapes, but a unknown figure sends her into a artic area. It's revealed that Null sent her, and is prepared to kill her, as he reveals he knows Alex is very dangerous and may ruin his plans with Entity 303. Alex kills Null, using cyro freeze acid and flees. Steve faces off against Entity 303 and Reaper. He is knocked out by the both of them, while Herobrine's real body is trying to escape the cube. However, is unsuccessful.

Alex reveals herself and takes out one of the guards with Entity 303 and Reaper, forcing the both of them to flee. Alex uses a Regeneration Potion to help heal Steve, and takes his last name as Alex Stonecutter. Herobrine finally escapes and gains access to the Nether, only a single step away from corrupting the overworld, so Steve and Alex bring a army of helpers, including Derp. A war begins and Herobrine takes over Alex's soul, creating Alexbrine, but Steve manages to get her back. They manage to remove the spirit all together and they win the war.

Alex and Steve plan to stay together to fight crime around the world if they need to. They walk off on a path into the distance.
