Season 3

The fourth season of the American adult animated horror television series The Aether, based on the Aether storyline from the Call of Duty: Zombies franchise, premiered on Netflix on October 6, 2032, and concluded on November 24, 2032. The season was developed by Jason Blundell, who returned as showrunner and executive producer.

Produced entirely through CGI animation and performance capture, the fourth season continued the storyline established in the previous season while reintroducing Edward Richtofen, Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki as main characters following their apparent erasure from existence. As dimensional fractures began spreading across reality once again, Samantha Maxis and the surviving members of Project Janus uncovered evidence suggesting fragments of the original multiverse had survived within the Dark Aether.

The season starred Nolan North, Steve Blum, Fred Tatasciore, Tom Kane, and Julie Nathanson reprising their roles from the previous seasons and video games, alongside Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and Jennifer Hale returning from the third season. Tony Todd also returned as the Shadowman.

The fourth season premiered with its first two episodes on October 6, 2032, with the remaining episodes released weekly until November 24, 2032. The season received widespread critical acclaim, with critics praising the return of the original crew, the season's large-scale horror storytelling, visual effects, performances, and emotional character focus.

Production

Development

Netflix renewed The Aether for a fourth season in December 2030 following the critical success of the previous season. Shortly after the announcement, Jason Blundell confirmed that the season would feature the return of the original crew in a major capacity.

According to Blundell, the fourth season was developed as a large-scale continuation intended to merge the newer mythology introduced during the third season with the core characters and themes of the original Aether storyline.

Writing

The writers structured the season around the consequences of attempting to erase the Aether permanently. Central themes included fate, memory, sacrifice, and the inability of history to remain buried.

Blundell stated that the return of Richtofen, Dempsey, Nikolai, and Takeo was planned from the beginning of the series' post-season two storyline, with the fourth season intended to explore how fragments of erased realities could continue existing within the Dark Aether.

Casting

In February 2031, Nolan North, Steve Blum, Fred Tatasciore, and Tom Kane were confirmed to reprise their roles as the original crew after being absent as main characters during the third season.

Julie Nathanson, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, Jennifer Hale, and Tony Todd also returned from previous seasons.

Animation

The fourth season continued the series' use of CGI animation and performance capture technology. Production placed greater emphasis on cinematic horror visuals, large-scale environments, and creature animation.

Several episodes featured environments inspired by distorted versions of classic locations from the original games, recreated through photorealistic rendering techniques.

Visual effects

Visual effects were provided by Framestore, DNEG, Pixomondo, and Rodeo FX. The season reportedly featured more than 2,600 visual effects shots, making it the largest production in the series at the time.

The visual effects teams focused heavily on dimensional instability effects, undead simulations, and large-scale environmental destruction.

Release

The fourth season premiered on Netflix on October 6, 2032. The first two episodes were released simultaneously, followed by weekly episode releases through November 24, 2032.

The season was released globally in 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos.

Reception

Critical response

The fourth season received widespread critical acclaim. Critics praised the return of the original crew, the emotional character writing, atmosphere, visual effects, and ambitious expansion of the series mythology.

Several reviewers highlighted the chemistry between Nolan North, Steve Blum, Fred Tatasciore, and Tom Kane as one of the season's strongest elements.

Audience viewership

According to Netflix, the fourth season became the most-watched season of the series during its premiere month. The return of the original crew generated significant online discussion and increased viewership among longtime Call of Duty: Zombies fans.
