Blackstar (stylized as BLACKSTAR) is an upcoming American supernatural superhero thriller film based on the Blackstar comic-book series created by Daniel Mercer. Directed by Evan Rourke and produced by Mara Ellison, the film stars Callum Reid as Adrian Vale / Blackstar. It is produced by Titan Forge Studios.

Inspired in part by the 1997 comic-book storyline Blackstar: City Without Morning, the film follows Adrian Vale, an emergency physician who was permanently connected to a mysterious energy known as the Void following an astronomical event years earlier. When thousands of residents of the city of Vesper disappear during a single night, Vale enters the quarantined area and discovers that the incident may be connected to the event which originally transformed him into Blackstar.

Development of the film was publicly announced by Titan Forge Studios during San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, with Rourke, Ellison and Reid confirmed to be involved. The studio described the film as a standalone project rather than the beginning of a planned shared universe. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in February 2027.

Blackstar is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on October 6, 2028.

Premise

Years after an unexplained astronomical phenomenon known as the Black Fall permanently connects emergency physician Adrian Vale to an extradimensional energy known as the Void, Vale lives with supernatural abilities which have severely affected his personal life.

When a catastrophic event strikes the fictional city of Vesper, thousands of people inexplicably disappear during a single night. Authorities isolate and seal the affected section of the city after losing contact with those inside.

Vale, whose abilities allow him to manipulate darkness, absorb certain forms of energy and briefly enter a hostile dimension existing alongside the physical world, enters the quarantined city. His investigation eventually suggests that the disappearances are connected to the same phenomenon responsible for the Black Fall and his transformation into Blackstar.

Cast

• Callum Reid as Adrian Vale / Blackstar: A former emergency physician who became connected to the Void following the Black Fall. Vale possesses the ability to manipulate darkness and absorb certain forms of energy, although using his powers carries physical and psychological consequences.

Additional cast members have yet to be announced.

Production

Development

Blackstar is based on the comic-book character of the same name created by Daniel Mercer, who first appeared in Blackstar #1 in 1994. The comics portrayed Adrian Vale as an emergency physician whose exposure to an unexplained astronomical phenomenon known as the Black Fall connected him to the Void, a hostile dimension existing alongside the physical world.

The series became known for combining elements of traditional superhero fiction with psychological horror, crime fiction and supernatural fiction. Unlike a conventional public superhero, Blackstar was generally depicted as an urban legend, with sightings and photographs of him frequently causing Vale to be blamed for supernatural incidents that he had attempted to prevent.

Titan Forge Studios developed a live-action film adaptation with Evan Rourke attached to direct and Mara Ellison producing. The filmmakers elected not to depict Vale's initial transformation as a conventional superhero origin story, with the film instead beginning after he has already operated as Blackstar and experienced significant consequences from his abilities.

The film draws heavily from the 1997 comic storyline Blackstar: City Without Morning, though Rourke and Titan Forge stated that it would not be a direct adaptation. Elements retained from the storyline include the isolation of part of Vesper and a supernatural event involving the disappearance of its population.

Announcement

Titan Forge Studios officially announced Blackstar on July 25, 2026, during the studio's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. The project was revealed as a surprise announcement near the conclusion of the presentation.

Following what appeared to be the final announcement of the panel, the lights in Hall H were switched off and a distorted fictional emergency transmission was played. The transmission stated that contact had been lost with everyone inside an unidentified city at 2:13 a.m. on September 17. Security-camera footage subsequently depicted abandoned streets with vehicles still running and businesses left open.

The transmission suggested that the missing residents had not been killed before footage showed an unidentified figure standing beneath a flickering streetlight. The presentation then cut to a title card revealing BLACKSTAR and an October 6, 2028 release date.

Rourke subsequently appeared on stage alongside Ellison and confirmed that principal photography was scheduled to begin in February 2027.

Rourke described the project as a "grounded supernatural thriller" rather than a conventional superhero origin film. He said that Vale's experiences as Blackstar had already destroyed a significant part of his life before the events of the film and that the story would focus on his reluctance to act as a hero despite being uniquely capable of confronting the threat in Vesper.

Casting

During the Comic-Con presentation, Callum Reid was announced as having been cast as Adrian Vale / Blackstar. Reid appeared onstage following the announcement and stated that he had concealed his involvement in the project for approximately six months.

Further casting was expected to be announced before the beginning of principal photography.

Design

Concept artwork of Blackstar's costume was presented exclusively to attendees at the Comic-Con panel. The design moved away from conventional superhero armour and consisted primarily of a weathered black tactical coat worn over a fitted protective suit. Sections of the costume appeared burned or corrupted as a consequence of Vale's connection to the Void.

Blackstar's white eyes, a defining feature of the character's appearance in the comics, were retained for the film. Rourke stated that the filmmakers intended to achieve much of the eye effect practically during production rather than creating it entirely through visual effects in post-production.

Rourke said that the film's interpretation of Blackstar was deliberately intended to appear frightening, arguing that someone encountering the character at night should initially be uncertain whether he represented a threat.

Filming

An early camera and costume test was conducted prior to the film's official announcement in July 2026. Approximately 55 seconds of footage produced during the test was screened for attendees at San Diego Comic-Con.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in February 2027.

Release

Blackstar is scheduled to be released exclusively in cinemas on October 6, 2028.

Marketing

The film's first promotional material was presented during its announcement at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026.

The announcement presentation began with fictional security-camera footage depicting an apparently abandoned metropolitan area before revealing the film's title and release date. Titan Forge subsequently screened approximately 55 seconds of unfinished footage recorded as part of an early camera and costume test.

The footage depicted Adrian Vale walking alone through the evacuated streets of Vesper as emergency broadcasts played from abandoned vehicles. After movement was visible inside a nearby apartment building, dark veins of energy began spreading across Vale's hand. A woman called Vale's name from within the building, after which every light inside the building illuminated simultaneously, revealing hundreds of silhouettes standing behind its windows. Vale's eyes then turned white before the footage cut to the film's title.

No footage from principal photography had been released at the time of the announcement, as filming was not scheduled to begin until February 2027.

Future

During the film's announcement, Titan Forge Studios stated that Blackstar had not been developed as the beginning of a predetermined interconnected film franchise.

Producer Mara Ellison said that the filmmakers intended the film to function as a complete standalone story if no sequel was produced and that its narrative would not primarily serve to establish other films or characters.

Ellison nevertheless indicated that additional stories set within the property could be developed depending on the film's reception, citing the amount of source material available from the comics.
