| Minecraft: The First Night | |
Villagers is an upcoming American computer-animated fantasy adventure comedy-drama television series created by Naomi Elridge for Disney+. Based on the Minecraft video game developed by Mojang Studios, it is produced by Mob Studios, Mob Studios Animation, Mob Productions, and Mojang Studios. The series is the first television installment of the Minecraft Universe (MIU) and forms part of its opening storyline, "Chapter One: The Broken Seed".
Set approximately one year before the events of Minecraft: The First Night (2028), the series follows village elder Sola, redstone engineer Mina Quill, cartographer Nia Vale, and the inhabitants of several Overworld settlements as they confront shortages, damaged trade routes, unexplained redstone activity, and the arrival of an Illager scouting force. Unlike the films, which primarily follow players such as Steve and Alex, Villagers focuses on ordinary inhabitants whose survival depends on construction, trade, shared knowledge, and cooperation.
Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Ayo Edebiri reprise their respective roles as Sola, Mina, and Nia from Minecraft: The First Night. The supporting cast includes Ke Huy Quan, Michaela Coel, Nick Mohammed, and Richard Ayoade. Elridge serves as showrunner and wrote the first episode, with Priya Desai, Owen Mercer, Talia Grant, and Simon Voss contributing to the season.
The series was announced in July 2026 as one of three television productions included in "Chapter One: The Broken Seed". Voice recording began later that year, followed by principal animation. In November 2026, Mob Studios confirmed that the first season would consist of eight episodes and premiere on February 16, 2028. By July 2027, principal voice recording was substantially complete, animation had progressed beyond the halfway point, and the first three episodes had entered lighting and final assembly.
Villagers is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on February 16, 2028, with its eight episodes being released weekly through April 5. It will be the first released project in the Minecraft Universe, although Mob Studios considers Minecraft: The First Night to be the formal beginning of the franchise's theatrical continuity.
Premise
Before the arrival of Steve, village elder Sola attempts to unite several isolated settlements as shortages of iron, food, and building materials place increasing pressure on the region. Her efforts are complicated by competing trade guilds, disagreements between village professions, damaged roads, and reports of abandoned settlements beyond the boundaries of the villagers' established maps.
Redstone engineer Mina Quill discovers that several villages were constructed over sections of an ancient redstone network. The system appears to connect settlements that have no recorded contact with one another and begins activating without an identifiable power source. Cartographer Nia Vale investigates changes to the surrounding terrain and finds that roads, caves, and structures have begun appearing differently from how they were previously mapped.
As the villagers attempt to understand the disturbances, an Illager scouting force begins targeting trade routes and abandoned structures. The Illagers believe that the world's generation should be controlled through ritual rather than unrestricted crafting and view the villagers' continued expansion as a threat. Sola must persuade communities with different customs, professions, and priorities to work together before the scouts become part of a larger invading force.
Voice cast
Main
- Michelle Yeoh as Sola, the elected elder of the principal village. She attempts to unite several settlements while balancing shortages, trade disputes, and disagreements over how the villagers should respond to the Illager threat. Elridge described Sola as an experienced leader whose authority depends on negotiation rather than command.[1]
- Stephanie Hsu as Mina Quill, a redstone engineer who discovers an abandoned network beneath the villages. Mina approaches crafting as a technical discipline and becomes increasingly concerned that the network is responding to events beyond the settlements. Hsu also serves as an executive producer.[2]
- Ayo Edebiri as Nia Vale, a cartographer who documents altered terrain, abandoned communities, and inconsistencies between older maps and the present Overworld. Her willingness to investigate speculation frequently conflicts with Mina's preference for verifiable evidence.
- Ke Huy Quan as Oren, the village's bell keeper and unofficial historian. Oren records births, trades, attacks, and changes to the settlement through a collection of bells, written ledgers, and oral traditions.
- Michaela Coel as Tamsin, a farmer and trade representative who opposes Sola's attempts to redistribute food between settlements without guarantees that the supplies will be repaid.
- Nick Mohammed as Pell, a librarian responsible for preserving crafting records and agreements between village professions. Pell believes that several pages concerning the abandoned redstone network were deliberately removed from the village archive.
- Richard Ayoade as Moss, a wandering trader whose unusual routes allow him to carry information between otherwise isolated settlements. His stories are frequently dismissed as exaggerations despite containing details that later prove accurate.
Recurring
The series features a recurring ensemble portraying farmers, armorers, toolsmiths, shepherds, clerics, fishermen, masons, guards, traders, and residents of neighboring settlements. Mob Studios said background villagers would be voiced by a regular ensemble so that minor characters could recur across episodes and later Minecraft Universe projects.[3]
The season also includes Illager scouts and representatives of several regional trade guilds. The leader of the wider Illager movement does not appear directly during the first season.

Development
During development of the Minecraft Universe, Mob Studios wanted at least one television series to establish the Overworld as an inhabited setting before the arrival of Steve. Elridge proposed a series focusing on villagers during the franchise's initial writers' group in early 2026. She believed the films would have limited time to explore the professions, customs, trade systems, and daily construction that allowed settlements to function.[4]
Elridge said the series originated from discussions about how villagers survived before players began altering their communities. Rather than explaining the villagers' origin, the writers focused on the social structures that had developed around farming, crafting, trading, building, and defense. Different settlements were designed with distinct architecture, leadership systems, professions, and beliefs concerning players and world generation.
The series was initially developed under the working title The Village. Early versions followed a different settlement in each episode, but Elridge believed the anthology structure prevented the audience from forming attachments to its characters. The concept was revised to follow one central community while using trade routes, neighboring villages, and traveling characters to expand the setting.
Sola, Mina Quill, and Nia Vale were incorporated into the series after their creation for Minecraft: The First Night. Elridge worked with the film's director, Jackson Miller, and screenwriter, Freddie Goodwin, to ensure that the series would establish their relationships without revealing information intended for the film.
Villagers was officially announced during Mob Studios' Minecraft Universe presentation on July 31, 2026. It was included alongside Redstone and Deep Dark as one of three television projects forming part of "Chapter One: The Broken Seed". Elridge was announced as creator and showrunner.[5]
The studio initially withheld the series' episode count and release date. In September 2026, Mob Studios confirmed that the series had entered production. An update issued on November 19 revealed an eight-episode order and scheduled the premiere for February 16, 2028.[6]
Writing
Elridge wrote the first episode and developed the season with Priya Desai, Owen Mercer, Talia Grant, and Simon Voss. The writers divided the season between stories concerning village professions, trade, construction, resource management, the abandoned redstone network, and the growing Illager threat.[7]
The series was designed to treat peaceful activities from Minecraft as sources of conflict rather than pauses between action sequences. Farming decisions affect whether settlements survive shortages, construction projects create disagreements over labor and resources, and trades can alter the political relationships between villages. Elridge said the characters' decisions were intended to have consequences even when no hostile mobs were present.
The writers developed several village cultures rather than depicting every settlement as identical. Some communities elect elders, while others are led by professional councils, merchant families, or religious figures. Their architecture reflects available materials, environmental conditions, and relationships with neighboring settlements.
The Illagers were written as a political and religious movement rather than an interchangeable army. They believe that unrestricted crafting and expansion interfere with the intended generation of the world. Different Illager orders disagree over whether villages should be controlled, converted, isolated, or destroyed.
The abandoned redstone network provides the season's continuing mystery. Mina initially believes it was built to transport signals and supplies between settlements, but the system appears to react to environmental changes that have not yet occurred. The series does not fully explain the network's creators or its connection to the Seed.
Elridge said the first season would remain understandable without knowledge of the wider Minecraft Universe. References to dimensional instability and the Seed are primarily presented through changes to the environment rather than direct exposition.
The final episode, "Before the First Night", takes place shortly before Steve awakens in the forest at the beginning of Minecraft: The First Night. It does not recreate the film's opening or require viewers to continue immediately into the film.[8]
Casting
Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Ayo Edebiri were approached about the series while recording preliminary material for Minecraft: The First Night. Mob Studios intended for performers to portray the same characters across film and television whenever scheduling allowed.
Yeoh agreed to reprise her role as Sola after Elridge explained that the series would explore the character's leadership before Steve's arrival. Elridge said Sola was more than the village elder who provided instructions during a crisis and wanted to depict the compromises required to maintain cooperation between professions and settlements.[1]
Hsu reprises her role as Mina and serves as an executive producer. The writers used the series to expand Mina's technical understanding of redstone and establish her longstanding partnership with Nia. Edebiri participated in improvisation sessions with Hsu that influenced the characters' differing approaches to investigation.
Ke Huy Quan, Michaela Coel, Nick Mohammed, and Richard Ayoade were announced as members of the supporting cast in November 2026. Elridge said the actors were selected for their ability to balance comedy with serious material rather than provide isolated celebrity appearances.[9]
Voice recording began in July 2026 and continued into 2027. The principal cast recorded several group sessions to allow interruptions, arguments, and background conversations to influence the episodes' staging. By July 2027, principal recording was complete apart from additional dialogue and replacement sessions.[10]
Animation and design
The series is produced through stylized computer animation by Mob Studios Animation. It uses the same basic character proportions and environmental rules developed for the Minecraft Universe films while employing simplified models, smaller environments, and a separate production pipeline suited to episodic television.
The visual style incorporates painted surfaces, illustrated maps, trade ledgers, banners, and textures inspired by illuminated manuscripts. Elridge wanted the environments to appear as though the villagers had documented their own history through objects, architecture, and decoration rather than through extensive spoken exposition.
Each profession has distinct clothing, tools, movement, and workspaces. Farmers use broader and more repetitive movements associated with planting and harvesting, librarians handle objects more carefully, and smiths move around heavier equipment. The animators developed recurring background routines so that village residents continue working when they are not central to a scene.
The principal settlement was designed with a construction history showing how it expanded over several generations. Older buildings use locally gathered wood and stone, while newer structures incorporate materials obtained through trade. Abandoned foundations and repurposed workshops indicate earlier periods of growth and decline.
The series' action sequences emphasize improvised defenses, bells, iron golems, barriers, farming tools, and the organization of residents rather than conventional armies. Illager raids are depicted from the perspective of communities with limited combat experience.
Production was underway on all eight episodes by July 2027. Voice recording was substantially complete, animation had progressed beyond the halfway point, and the first three episodes had entered lighting and final assembly.[10]
Marketing
Villagers was announced with the wider Minecraft Universe slate on July 31, 2026. Early concept artwork depicted Sola standing at the center of an expanding village while incomplete roads extended toward neighboring settlements.[5]
Mob Studios revealed the series' title treatment, episode count, and release date in November 2026. The title design resembles a wooden village sign assembled from differently aged materials, with a bell incorporated into the lettering.[6]
The first footage was shown during Mob Studios' Minecraft Universe anniversary presentation on July 31, 2027. It included scenes of Sola overseeing construction, Mina repairing an abandoned redstone line, Nia mapping nearby settlements, and villagers preparing for an Illager raid. The footage was not released publicly as a complete trailer.[11]
The presentation also revealed the titles of all eight episodes. Mob Studios said a public trailer would be released closer to the series' premiere.
Release
Villagers is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on February 16, 2028. Its eight episodes will be released weekly, with the season finale scheduled for April 5.[12]
The series will be the first released project in the Minecraft Universe, preceding the theatrical release of Minecraft: The First Night on June 9, 2028. Mob Studios considers the film the formal beginning of the theatrical continuity and has said that audiences will not be required to watch Villagers to understand it.
Future
The characters featured in Villagers are intended to continue appearing throughout the Minecraft Universe. Yeoh, Hsu, and Edebiri reprise their roles in Minecraft: The First Night, while Mina and Nia subsequently lead Redstone.
The Illager movement and the abandoned redstone network are expected to continue influencing later projects, although Mob Studios has not confirmed a second season. Elridge said the first season was written with a complete central story and would not end solely as preparation for another television series or film.[13]
