While Barry, Wally and Cisco continue protecting Central City from criminals scavenging Wren's abandoned technology, CCPD receives a new Major Crimes transfer, Eddie Thawne, whose appearance is identical to Eobard Thawne. Traumatized by the resemblance, Barry attacks Eddie before realizing he has no Speed Force signature. Testing reveals that Eddie shares almost identical DNA with Eobard despite possessing different fingerprints, memories and an extensively documented life in Keystone City. Cisco's abilities reveal that Eddie is not Eobard but appears to be an "echo" of altered history, accompanied by visions of a mysterious blue crystal. Meanwhile, brief temporal loops begin occurring throughout Central City and converge at Union Station, where a commuter train becomes trapped repeating the same four seconds. Barry evacuates its passengers while Eddie manually disables the rail power, allowing Barry, Wally and Cisco to stop the train when the accumulated kinetic energy is released. Barry subsequently apologizes to Eddie and accepts that he is a different person. That night, Eddie follows a strange hum beneath Union Station and discovers the blue crystal, which engulfs his hand in cold blue fire before leaving a cobalt-colored mark beneath his skin.
