ShooterofIO: Modern Ops is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by SOI Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the twelfth installment in the ShooterofIO series and a reboot of the Modern Ops sub-series, which began with ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops (2007). The game is scheduled to be released worldwide on November 5, 2019, for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[1]
The game was confirmed on March 10, 2019, after its title appeared early through a publisher listing and related promotional material.[2] Mob Productions later confirmed that the game would reboot the Modern Ops sub-series and use SOI Engine 2, a new iteration of the series' game engine.[3][4] A worldwide reveal event was held on June 10, 2019, detailing the game's open-world campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the post-launch mode ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0.[5]
Gameplay
ShooterofIO: Modern Ops will be a first-person shooter game.[2] It will comprise three main components: an open-world single-player campaign; a competitive multiplayer mode; and ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0, a post-launch experience connected to the main game.[5][6] The campaign is set in the open-world city of Al Mazara and its surrounding region, where players can complete story missions, gather intelligence, attack enemy-controlled locations, acquire vehicles, and approach objectives through stealth, direct combat, or support from allied units.[7] The mode also includes safehouses, civilian areas, optional contracts, wanted levels, and persistent equipment gained through campaign progression.[7]
The multiplayer mode features traditional custom classes, weapon progression, perks, scorestreaks, public playlists, and private matches.[8] SOI Studios confirmed that the game would include core 6v6 maps at launch, alongside larger Combined Arms maps using vehicles and expanded objective routes.[8] The reveal also introduced Field Upgrades, which are charge-based equipment abilities earned during a match, and Gunsmith, an expanded weapon-customization system that allows players to alter weapon handling through attachments.[9]
ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 is a post-launch large-scale mode planned to release after the main game.[10] The mode will take place on a larger version of the campaign map and will feature squads deploying into the region to scavenge equipment, complete objectives, fight other players, and extract before being eliminated.[10] Mob Productions described the mode as a separate post-launch experience built from the technology and world systems of the campaign, but did not announce a release date during the June 10 reveal.[10]
Premise
The campaign follows a reimagined Task Force Viper during a modern conflict involving Redline, a private military network operating across Al Mazara under the command of Viktor Saren.[11] SOI Studios described the reboot as a new continuity for the Modern Ops sub-series, using names and concepts from the 2007 game while changing the setting, structure, and characterization for the 2019 title.[11][3]
Development
ShooterofIO: Modern Ops is being developed by SOI Studios, which previously developed ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops (2007), ShooterofIO: Modern Ops 2 (2010), ShooterofIO: Modern Ops 3 (2013), and ShooterofIO: Shadows (2016).[12] Mob Productions identified SOI Studios as the developer when the game was confirmed on March 10, 2019.[2]
Before its confirmation, the game had been the subject of reports connected to Mob Productions' 2019 release schedule. On March 8, 2019, Video Game Weekly reported that a new Modern Ops title had appeared in internal retail and media materials, while Game Frontier later reported that the title had briefly appeared on a Mob Productions publishing schedule before being removed.[13][14] Mob Productions acknowledged the title shortly after the reports, confirming the game for release in 2019 but not providing a gameplay trailer or full reveal at that time.[2]
On March 30, 2019, Mob Productions announced that the game would be a reboot of the Modern Ops sub-series rather than a remaster or direct remake of ShooterofIO 1: Modern Ops.[3] On April 10, SOI Studios confirmed that the game would use SOI Engine 2, describing the engine as a new iteration of the technology used for previous ShooterofIO entries.[4] The same announcement confirmed the game's platforms and release date, while Mob Productions also announced ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0 as a post-launch experience.[1][6]
On May 10, 2019, Mob Productions announced that the game would include three modes and identified the campaign as an open-world experience, with a fuller presentation scheduled for June 10.[15] Around the same time, reports from gaming outlets and industry insiders compared the campaign's reported structure to a large open-world action game.[16][17] Additional reporting on May 20 described the campaign as "GTA meets ShooterofIO", although Mob Productions had not confirmed the comparison before the reveal event.[18]
The June 10 worldwide reveal confirmed that the campaign would be a full open-world mode rather than a series of linear missions.[5][7] SOI Studios said the team developed the campaign around a single connected region, with story missions placed inside an open map containing enemy-controlled districts, safehouses, side activities, and vehicle travel.[7] The team said the reboot structure allowed them to reuse the central conflict of the original Modern Ops while changing the scale and presentation of the campaign.[11] The reveal also showed multiplayer and Wargrounds 2.0, both of which were described as sharing technology, weapons, and locations with the campaign.[8][10]
Marketing and release
ShooterofIO: Modern Ops was confirmed on March 10, 2019, after its title was accidentally revealed through an online listing and related promotional references.[2] The early confirmation did not include a platform list, gameplay trailer, beta schedule, or final release date.[2] Several outlets later reported that Mob Productions and SOI Studios were preparing a fuller reveal for June 2019, although the publisher had not officially announced a reveal date at the time.[19][20]
On March 30, 2019, Mob Productions confirmed that the 2019 game would reboot the Modern Ops sub-series.[3] On April 10, Mob Productions confirmed that ShooterofIO: Modern Ops would be released worldwide on November 5, 2019, for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[1] The publisher also announced ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0, a post-launch experience planned to release after the main game.[6]
On May 10, 2019, Mob Productions announced that the worldwide reveal event for ShooterofIO: Modern Ops would take place on June 10.[15] The announcement also confirmed the game's three-mode structure and stated that the open-world campaign would be shown during the reveal.[15] The game's promotional artwork was released on May 20, 2019.[21]
The worldwide reveal event was held on June 10, 2019.[5] It included the game's first full trailer, an open-world campaign demonstration, an initial multiplayer overview, and first details for ShooterofIO: Wargrounds 2.0.[5][7][8][10] Coverage of the reveal focused heavily on the scale of the campaign, with several outlets comparing the announced open-world structure to earlier insider reports about the game.[22]
