Minecraft One is an upcoming American superhero film based on the video game of the same name from Mojang. Produced by Mob Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is a prequel to Minecraft (2016) and is the tenth installment in the Minecraft Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Freddie Goodwin from a screenplay he wrote. Grant Gustin reprises his role as Steve Stonecutter, along with Amy Poehler as Alex Stonecutter, Scott Menville as Derp, andJames Earl Jones as Herobrine, respectively.

Development on a new Minecraft film began shortly after the release of the finale of the MCCU in 2023. Freddie Goodwin planned to remaster the first film and worked alone until 2027. Shawn Levy joined the project and rewrote the script twice but ultimately decided to leave the project in June 2028. In January 2029, Goodwin chose to work alone and changed the plan to instead to make a new film that has a bit of the original film. He kept multiple elements and opted to change the flow of the film. He announced in 2030 that Herobrine and Steve would return with a much different storyline. In early 2031, the screenplay had been scrapped and reworked into a prequel, serving as a film years before the first film.

Minecraft One is scheduled to be released on August 17, 2034, as part of the MCCU.

Background

Negotiations regarding a sequel to Deadpool (2024) began in 2023 when filming was completed. Ryan Reynolds agreed to return as long as he is a producer of each project his character appears in.[1] At first, Freddie Goodwin planned to direct and write the sequel as he did the same with the first film, however chose to oversee projects as the producer and CEO of Mob Productions and the work that is requried to continue the MCU.[2]

Development

The development of a sequel to the 2024 Deadpool film commenced as SOI Studios was crafting plans for the ultimately discarded "SOIverse," envisioning the sequel as a grand finale to Deadpool's narrative arc and a gateway to the conclusion of the entire universe. Concurrently, a film centered around Wolverine was also in advanced stages of development, indicating an early interest in exploring stories beyond the singular focus of the original Deadpool narrative. However, this trajectory took a significant turn in 2019 when Disney acquired SOI Studios and integrated it with Mob Productions, prompting a fresh start for the sequel's development amidst this corporate restructuring.

As the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Freddie Goodwin took the creative helm to revise the studio's strategy, emphasizing the importance of multi-character narratives over solo ventures. Initially uncertain about which character would join Deadpool, Goodwin's vision crystalized by July 2021. Amid the production of the first film, it was confirmed that the sequel would spotlight Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman returning to his iconic role from the X-Men film series, thereby blending the two beloved characters' worlds in a move poised to excite fans and expand the narrative scope.

The decision to pair Deadpool with another character led to considerations of including Cable, reminiscent of their dynamic in the first film. However, Goodwin, aiming for innovation and expansion of the universe, decided against reiterating past formulas. Opting for Wolverine introduced a second mutant to the universe and underscored the studio's ambition to weave a richer tapestry of interconnected stories, drawing from various comic sources. This approach not only aimed at diversifying the narrative landscape but also at mitigating the risks associated with single-character films, which might not achieve desired box office success.

In 2021, Goodwin's announcement that Deadpool 2 would feature in Phase Two of their cinematic universe, with a potential third installment slated for Phase Three, marked a strategic pivot. This phased approach reflects a broader vision for the studio, integrating characters in ensemble films before launching them into their standalone narratives. Goodwin's strategy addresses the financial concerns of solo character films by laying a foundation that enriches the universe and ensures characters are well-received and financially viable for their solo outings, promising a more interconnected and expansive cinematic universe for audiences to explore.

Casting

Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool. Reprising their roles from the first film is Morena Baccarin, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Josh Brolin, and Zazie Beetz. It was also confirmed that Dev Patel would reprise his role as Alex Singh in the film.[3]

Sequel

A sequel is in development and is planned to be released during Phase Three of the Mob Cinematic Universe.
