Production

Development

In March 2021, it was reported from various sources that a film based on Superman is in development and is planned to be released as part of the upcoming DCU.[19] Freddie Goodwin announced he was preparing to begin writing the screenplay by June 2022,[20] however was forced to stop after his other project, that was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was behind in development.[21][22] By 2023, it was announced that Goodwin was instead developing a universe that wouldn't feature too many characters and won't be forced to just DC Comics or Marvel Comics and instead wanted to have multiple characters from both universes.[23][24]

In June 2023, Goodwin announced the first three projects coming to the GWU,[25] which begins with Superman: Return to Krypton, which was confirmed to be directly connected to the film that will focus on two characters called "Gold & Jokes",[26] which would be focused on the Joker and Booster Gold and the third film being titled Batman: Shadows of Gotham which will introduce the Batman of the universe.[27][28][29][30]

By 2024, Goodwin stated that the film, while being grounded,[31] will feature various themes that normally would be found in a sequel.[32][33]

Pre-production

Production design, costume design, and the casting process began in September 2023. Goodwin knew he wanted Tyler Hoechlin to be this universes' Superman. In October 2023, Hoechlin was offered the role and by March 2024, Hoechlin accepted the offer.

Filming was set to begin in January 2024. Gunn was looking for an actor to play Superman who possessed the character's humanity, kindness, and compassion, and was "somebody who you want to give a hug". He said the character Jimmy Olsen would appear, and that he was not looking to make the film a comedy. He hoped Legacy would be different from previous Superman films while still respecting what came before. Gunn turned in the first draft of the script at the end of April and the production was not expected to be impacted by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike when it began in early May.
