Minecraft Zone is a 2023 action-adventure, survival, extraction, and monster-taming game developed by SOI Studios and published by Monsteristic and Mojang,[1] set in the 3D sandbox video game, Minecraft (2011) world and combines structured gameplay that of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0's DMZ mode. Players must select a "base" weapon (e.g; a Wooden Sword or a Wooden Axe) and must use these weapons to kill mobs (Zombies, Skeletons, etc). Players can use Schematics to craft items on a cooldown and bring Acquisitions into future matches. Upgrades are also available among many other mechanics that allow the user to earn progress in different ways. The game lacks a conventional ending; with a "ending" planned, which has been officially confirmed by SOI Studios.[2][3]
Development on Minecraft Zone began in 2014 after SOI Studios opened a third office that would develop games outside the ShooterofIO franchise. SOI Studios were inspired by that to create a game similar. In 2022, they restarted minor parts of the project to incorperate concepts first seen in 2022's Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0's DMZ mode. The game had plans to release with two playable maps, though the plan to incorperate DMZ gameplay forced the team to abandon the second map.
Announced on June 10, 2022, Minecraft Zone was released on November 18, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows.
On April 3, 2024, SOI Studios announced a second gamemode that is being incorperated into the game. On August 13, it was announced as an entirely new game, titled Minecraft Defense, is scheduled to be released on November 12, 2024.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
In Minecraft Zone, players begin their adventure by selecting one of four available skins. The game introduces a unique map, diverging from traditional Minecraft games by adopting a conventional health system over the usual heart-based metric. Players start with 150 health points, which can be augmented by Armor Plates, each granting an additional 50 health points for up to a total of 300 points when maximum armor is equipped. Health diminishes when players encounter hostile mobs or sustain fall damage but regenerates over time.
Players have the opportunity to unlock various skins through purchasing bundles, achieving certain milestones, or progressing through the seasonal Battle Pass. The game also incorporates a Backpack system essential for inventory management, limiting players to carrying 16 items per match, excluding loadout weapons. Backpacks come in three sizes - Small, Medium, and Large - with the larger variants available as rewards in Tier II chests or upon completing Contracts. Losing a life reverts players back to the smallest backpack size.
Unique to Minecraft Zone are "Acquisitions" and "Schematics." Acquisitions are one-time use items that can be activated in subsequent games, but are forfeited if the player is eliminated mid-match. Schematics offer a more permanent benefit, allowing players to craft specific items, like a Diamond Sword, on a cooldown basis.
The game's economy revolves around Essence, a currency reset every match. Essence can be spent on perks, upgrades, enchantments, and other enhancements, earned through defeating hostile mobs and fulfilling Contracts.
Unlike traditional Minecraft, all map tiers in Minecraft Zone house the same hostile entities, while the first tier also includes friendly creatures such as Chickens, Pigs, Goats, Wolves, and Cows. The game maintains a familiar enchantment system, albeit with significant modifications that necessitate varied strategies each match. Enchantment tables remain pivotal for player advancement, echoing the enchantment mechanics of Minecraft: Java Edition, yet tailored to offer a distinct gameplay experience within Minecraft Zone.

Plot[edit | edit source]
Chapter 1[edit | edit source]
Over the span of twelve years, Steve and Alex, two best friends, embarked on an epic journey through a vast multiverse filled with countless challenges and adventures. This seemingly never-ending journey brought them face to face with strange and sometimes sinister forces that tested their bond and skills. Steve, once confident and strong, began to experience troubling visions of an evil doppelgänger—a twisted version of himself that appeared to mimic his every move. These visions were unsettling, and it soon became clear that this was no ordinary threat. Something dark was lurking, a force that sought to break them apart and unravel the very fabric of the multiverse.
Their journey led them to a key ally named Derp, a quirky and loyal friend who had secretly been a member of the Good Justice Society (GJS), an organization dedicated to protecting the multiverse from threats arising from dangerous dimensions like the Nether. Derp’s knowledge and connection with the GJS made him a vital part of Steve and Alex's team. Together, they faced one of their first major threats: the Angel of Death (AOD). An intense and harrowing battle unfolded as the trio faced off against this formidable enemy. Through bravery, quick thinking, and teamwork, they managed to banish the Angel of Death to the Nether, though the victory left them weary and wary of what was to come.
As if that challenge wasn’t enough, the group soon found themselves in the End dimension, where Steve’s evil twin—an entity with hauntingly white eyes—emerged from the shadows. This dark version of Steve was no ordinary foe but rather a reflection of his darkest fears and insecurities. Its appearance hinted at something even more sinister ahead, a larger conflict brewing in the multiverse. As they tried to piece together this mystery, Steve, Alex, and Derp were drawn into a strange and mystifying struggle with an enigmatic being called Null. Commanded by an unseen adversary, Null was sent to destroy the trio. However, just as quickly as he appeared, Null vanished, leaving Steve battling his internal demons, still haunted by visions of his doppelgänger.
Derp, always the optimistic and proactive friend, convinced Steve that they needed to focus on the immediate threats, starting with protecting Diamond Hill Village. Upon arriving in the village, they encountered a malevolent Witch who had been using the village’s honey supplies to create potions that greatly enhanced her power. After a fierce battle, Steve managed to defeat the Witch, though not before she ominously hinted that a much larger and more dangerous threat loomed in the shadows.
That same night, the village came under attack from an army of mobs. Together, Steve, Alex, and Derp fought valiantly to repel the attackers, but something strange occurred in the aftermath. A strange light enveloped Steve, causing him to vanish without a trace. Shortly after, Derp too disappeared in a similar flash of light, leaving Alex stranded and alone in the Hypixel server lobby. Steve, now isolated in an unknown world, struggled to make sense of his new surroundings, realizing that he had been transported back to the beginning of time itself.
Meanwhile, Alex and Derp, now back together in Hypixel, were faced with an overwhelming new threat: Null had returned, this time commanding an army of mobs with the intention of laying waste to the entire Hypixel server. Desperate for reinforcements, Alex and Derp called upon the Good Justice Society for help. However, Null’s assault intensified as he sent two powerful villains, Warewolf and Reaper, to pursue the remaining heroes and wreak havoc in the Hypixel lobby.
In a twist of fate, Steve managed to teleport back to the Hypixel lobby but was gravely injured during an attack by Warewolf and Reaper. As he lay unconscious, Alex rushed to his side, rescuing him from the clutches of death. Derp, inspired by a dream involving a mysterious gate and fish, began to formulate a new plan to turn the tide of the battle. In a dramatic revelation, the mastermind behind these events was revealed: Herobrine. Herobrine, the legendary and feared being, was driven by an insatiable need for recognition and revenge. His hatred for Steve ran deep, stemming from a glitch created by Notch himself. This glitch had resulted in the creation of an indestructible duplicate of Steve—Herobrine—who had been shunned and cast out. Filled with rage and bitterness, Herobrine now sought to destroy Steve and claim his fame.
Despite their victories over foes like Null, Entity 303, Warewolf, and Reaper, the heroes faced an even greater challenge in the End dimension. After defeating a Wither and crafting a powerful beacon gun, they vanquished the End Dragon. However, their celebration was short-lived as an empowered Null disrupted their victory, abducting several members of their group and further complicating their mission. Herobrine, relentless in his pursuit, launched a malicious plan to eliminate Steve once and for all.
Derp reconnected with the Good Justice Society, while Null relentlessly chased Steve through time itself. Tragically, Steve’s loyal companion, a wolf named Jerry, was killed during one of Null’s attacks. This loss hit Steve hard, but he continued to fight on, determined to stop Herobrine and save the multiverse.
Steve’s perilous journey took him back to Hypixel, where he realized he was in the present but still separated from Alex and Derp. Herobrine, always one step ahead, confronted Alex, revealing his lethal intent. In a final, climactic moment, Herobrine immobilized Null and captured Steve. Alex, wielding a powerful ice sword, managed to defeat Null, but the battle was far from over. Herobrine, backed by an army of villains including Entity 303, Warewolf, and Reaper, was preparing for the ultimate showdown.
In the Overworld, Derp and Alex discovered that Steve was trapped in the past and that the key to rescuing him lay in the depths of the Nether. As they raced against time, Herobrine induced Steve into a coma, showing him a bleak and twisted vision of the future. Despite Herobrine’s manipulative attempts to break him, Steve refused to succumb and managed to escape Herobrine’s grasp.
In the Hypixel virtual world, Herobrine disrupted the server using a powerful command block, threatening to tear apart everything Steve, Alex, and Derp had fought for. With the help of Nova and Jackster, the heroes devised a final strategy to defeat Herobrine once and for all. As the battle reached its climax, Steve made the ultimate sacrifice to save the multiverse, only to discover Herobrine’s true nature in a mysterious place known as "The Gap." Steve emerged from this strange realm with a new, enigmatic appearance, now known as "Stevebrine."
As the group reunited in Diamond Hill Village and prepared for the final confrontation, it became clear that the journey was far from over. Stevebrine, transformed by his experiences, now faced the ultimate test: defeating Herobrine and restoring peace to the multiverse. With the fate of all worlds hanging in the balance, Steve, Alex, and Derp gathered their allies for the final battle, knowing that this would be their greatest challenge yet.
Development[edit | edit source]
Minecraft Zone is being developed by SOI Studios and published by Monsteristic and Mojang.
During development, the original plan was to have a PvP mode with extraction features so that players can retreat with their contents for future games, or choose to stash those items for future games. SOI Studios increased the team size of developers for the game so that it could release on schedule, which was planned in 2017, though was delayed indefinitely until the game was in a better quality release state. In June 2018, the game was confirmed to be releasing on November 18, 2023, with plans to bring the game to next generation consoles that would release in 2020.
The game was revealed on social media with a singler ten minute trailer which featured gameplay in various styles of gameplay. The trailer was disliked by millions due to the lack of originality from SOI Studios, though praised for its innovation and content that the game has to offer. On January 12, 2024, prior to the start of Season One, SOI Studios announced the theme names for the first three seasons being "The End Awakens", "The Adventure Continues", and "The Deep Abyss".
Release[edit | edit source]
The game was revealed on September 11, 2013, with a planned release in 2017. In June 2018, the game was confirmed to be releasing on November 18, 2023, with plans to bring the game to next generation consoles that would release in 2020.
The game was released on November 18, 2023, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows. Planned features for future updates include PvP modes, guild raids, and cross-server item trading and multiple exclusion zones.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Pre-release[edit | edit source]
The game's reveal trailer was met with high engagement on social media and mixed reception, ranging from excitement to disgust. It also received some skepticism due to the unfinished state of the developer's earlier work, ShooterofIO. The satirical tone of promotional material, with references to labor laws and illegal hunting, sparked interest in the game exploring the dark undertones of the creature-collecting genre.
Release[edit | edit source]
Minecraft Zone received mostly positive reviews from critics. IGN and PC Invasion praised its fun combat and engaging gameplay loop, with the latter noting the large, albeit somewhat barren, environments being brought to life by different Mobs. The Escapist described the combat allowing players to fight alongside their Mobs against tougher enemies as a high point. PCGamesN called the game "a morbidly compelling descent into creature capitalism", stating that though it had some flaws, such as its insistence on ethically questionable behavior and the unoriginal designs of Mobs, its gameplay and the open world made up for it. GameSpot praised the game's mechanics and tone as a "refreshing perspective in a genre so often tripping over itself to present things as joyous and heartfelt", believing it to represent the first time "a creature collector game has owned up to its exploitation-as-gameplay systems."
Conversely, Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer criticized Minecraft Zone for relying too heavily on shock humor about animal abuse and sweatshop labor in its gameplay, which PC Gamer derided as "mid-2000s Newgrounds edgelord" and "over-committing to the bit", with Rock Paper Shotgun arguing the gameplay mechanics and presentation of Mobs fundamentally misunderstood the meanings and appeal behind Pokémon and the monster-catching genre. It also attracted some criticism for the unoriginal designs of Mobs and mechanics lifted from other titles, which VG247 thought undermined a game "worth admiring".
Minecraft Zone sold over one million copies in its first eight hours of early access on January 19, 2024, which rose to two million copies within the first 24 hours, three million copies within the first 40 hours, five million copies by day 3, six million by day 4, seven million by day 5, and eight million by day 6. On January 24, 2024, it reached over 2,000,000 concurrent players on Steam, becoming the first game since PUBG: Battlegrounds to achieve this feat. The high player count led to server issues. On January 27, Minecraft Zone recorded 2,101,867 concurrent players on Steam. By February 1, the game sold 12 million copies on Steam and had reached 7 million players on Xbox. According to Microsoft, the game was the most-played 3rd party release on Xbox Game Pass, reaching a peak of almost 3 million daily active players on the Xbox platform. As of February 22, 2024, the game sold 15 million copies on Steam and had reached 10 million players on Xbox.
However, by February 11, the game reportedly faced the largest two-week player drop on Steam - down from its peak concurrent player count of 2,101,867 to about 750,000 concurrent players. In response to those reports, Pocketpair community manager Bucky wrote on Twitter "This emerging 'Minecraft Zone has lost X% of its player base' discourse is lazy, but it's probably also a good time to step in and reassure those of you capable of reading past a headline that it is fine to take breaks from games." He also wrote "If you are still playing Minecraft Zone, we love you. If you're no longer playing Minecraft Zone, we still love you, and we hope you'll come back for round two when you're ready."
