Ascendants is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the X-Men. Produced by Mob Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the 5th film in the Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the final entry of Phase One. Directed by Finnian Hawke and written by Ulysses Black, the film features an ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr. In the film, a coalition of mutants and heroes — dubbed the "Ascendants" — must unite to stop Virex (Downey), an ancient being who threatens to collapse all realities into one.

Initial reports of Mob Productions developing an X-Men-based film surfaced in June 2020, with sources indicating the film would not carry the "X-Men" title and instead focus more broadly on mutants. In 2021, Mob Productions officially announced plans for a new cinematic universe centered around a "Mutant vs. Hero" narrative, which was widely speculated to involve the Avengers. The film was confirmed as the culmination of Phase One and would introduce original mutant characters alongside returning MCU heroes.

Ascendants is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 23, 2025, as part of Phase One of the MCU.

Premise

Set eight months after the events of The Wolverine: Rebirth (2025), the heroes of the MCU unite to confront Virex, whose actions threaten the fabric of the multiverse.

Production

Development

During early development of the Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU), rumors began to circulate in June 2020 that Mob Productions was working on a film centered around the X-Men franchise. Initial insider reports suggested that the film would not use the “X-Men” name, instead opting to spotlight the broader mutant population of the Marvel universe. By 2021, Mob Productions publicly confirmed that they were developing a connected cinematic saga centered on a “Mutant vs. Hero” conflict, which many speculated would culminate in a clash with the Avengers.

On June 12, 2022, during a digital presentation hosted by studio executive Jordan Goodwin, Mob Productions formally revealed its full Phase One slate of films for the MCU. The lineup included titles such as The Fantastic Four (2024) and Doctor Doom (2025), both of which were teased as narrative keystones for a larger confrontation. Goodwin confirmed that the concluding film of Phase One would be Ascendants, an ensemble crossover project uniting the leads from all previous MCU entries. He emphasized that the events of Doctor Doom would have “direct ramifications” for the worldbuilding and stakes of Ascendants, with The Fantastic Four serving as the “emotional and scientific gateway” to the story’s central conflict.

Studio sources noted that Ascendants had been in conceptual development since mid-2020, with early drafts undergoing significant rewrites to accommodate character arcs from standalone films. Unlike traditional team-up films, the narrative focus was intended to highlight the ideological fractures between legacy heroes and emerging mutants. Goodwin cited the “deep moral ambiguity” of both sides as a core theme. During internal discussions, Mob Productions opted not to include the X-Men branding, citing a desire to redefine public perception of mutantkind in a modern context.

In mid-2023, Mob confirmed that multiple lead actors from previous films had signed on to appear in Ascendants, including the full core cast of The Fantastic Four, as well as key figures introduced in Mutants: Genesis and Doctor Doom. While characters like Magneto and Reed Richards were rumored to play pivotal roles, the studio remained silent on the final roster to avoid spoilers.

The film was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2023, with a scheduled release date of November 23, 2025. Positioned as the climactic finale to Phase One of the MCU, Ascendants was marketed as “the beginning of everything to come,” with Goodwin describing it as a “collision course between vision and vengeance.” As of late 2024, the film entered final production, with reshoots reportedly designed to integrate additional character cameos and refine the central confrontation’s narrative weight.

The Writers Guild of America strike concluded in late September 2023, and by November, internal discussions at Mob Productions regarding Ascendants resumed in full. Studio head Jordan Goodwin emphasized that the film would only proceed if it “honored the legacy of every character involved,” given the high stakes of concluding Phase One of the Mob Cinematic Universe (MCU). In early 2024, industry insider Jeff Sneider reported that Destin Daniel Cretton and Justin Lin were being considered to direct the ensemble film, while veteran MCU writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were confirmed to be returning to script the film following their work on previous franchise entries. With a sprawling cast assembled across multiple films, production was tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2024 or early 2025, with some actor schedules — including Florence Pugh and Simu Liu — requiring reshuffling to accommodate.

By March 2024, Ascendants still lacked a finalized script or confirmed director, though the scope of the film had become clearer. Goodwin reiterated in press interviews that Mob Productions would not rush production, stating the writers were being given “as much time as needed” to ensure narrative cohesion across the MCU. Lead actor Chris Hemsworth, who plays Kael Thorne / Stormborne, stated in April that he was involved in early creative discussions for the first time in his MCU tenure, citing the opportunity to shape the story’s emotional arc. He noted the challenge was balancing over two dozen characters across multiversal events, calling it “the most ambitious script I’ve ever seen.” Kevin Feige, serving as executive producer through a collaborative arrangement, confirmed in July 2024 that a complete script draft was “nearly locked.”

Destin Daniel Cretton emerged as the studio’s top choice to direct by September 2024, entering early talks to helm the project. Having previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and signed an overall deal with Mob in 2022, Cretton had been attached to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before stepping down due to scheduling conflicts. That project was reworked into Avengers: Doomsday (2026), shifting narrative momentum to Ascendants as the centerpiece of the saga. McKenna and Sommers were officially confirmed as the screenwriters, and filming was now planned for a Spring 2025 start. Sneider reported that while the full ensemble would return, scheduling constraints meant certain characters — including Florence Pugh’s Syla Ryn and Letitia Wright’s Nyari Sol — would have smaller, targeted arcs.

In October 2024, Chris Hemsworth and Vanessa Kirby (Elira Voss / Mirage) read the latest script draft, both praising its complexity but admitting the interconnected timelines still needed refinement. Hemsworth noted that coordinating storylines across the multiverse arc, The Shatterpoint, and multiple returning villains was “a tall order, but possible with the team we have.” Filming was then rescheduled to mid-2025 to accommodate Hemsworth’s role in Avengers: Doomsday and Kirby’s commitments to other projects.

Later that month, Destin Daniel Cretton officially signed on to direct Ascendants, with a global release date announced for November 23, 2025. Meanwhile, ongoing revisions to the screenplay trimmed or restructured several roles — notably Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghostveil and Simu Liu’s Skyburn — to allow for more focus on the film’s core conflict: the Ascendants vs. Virex, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., in his first post-Avengers role. Zendaya, previously rumored to appear in a mystery role connected to the Fold, was reported to have passed due to scheduling overlap with Euphoria and a third Dune installment, which were both delayed to 2026.

In November, Sneider reported that the production window had shifted to late 2025, with the possibility of a post-2026 release if the visual effects pipeline became too congested. Despite that, the studio affirmed its 2025 date, citing the film’s narrative importance as the endpoint of multiple character arcs introduced since The Fantastic Four (2024). Additional casting details leaked in December revealed that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Alan Cumming would reprise cosmic legacy roles as Coran Vale, Obelisk, and Nightseer respectively, while new additions like Pedro Pascal as Solon Rhade / Architect and James Marsden as Valen Kray / Pulse were confirmed to be key to the climactic final act.

Filming

Principal photography began on November 10, 2024, at Pinewood Studios in London, under the working title New World Store. The film will be shot for IMAX and officially concluded on February 26, 2025. Reshoots are set to begin in June 2025 and will last until September 2025.
