Captain Atom is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by DC Studios and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is scheduled for release in 2050 and will serve as the inaugural installment of a new DC Universe. It will mark the first major live-action adaptation of Captain Atom and is intended to present a grounded and cinematic origin story.

The film will introduce Nathaniel Adam, a United States Air Force officer who becomes bonded with an alien metal during a military experiment, gaining access to the quantum field and vast, godlike powers including atomic manipulation, time travel, and matter transmutation. The story will explore themes of governmental control, identity, and the burden of near-omnipotence.

Premise

After volunteering for a top-secret government experiment, Air Force officer Nathaniel Adam is presumed dead. Years later, he returns—transformed into a being of immense atomic power, but stripped of his past identity. Now codenamed *Captain Atom*, Nathaniel must come to terms with his powers, uncover the truth behind the experiment that created him, and fight to retain his humanity as the government seeks to weaponize him.

Development

Following the conclusion of the previous DC Extended Universe slate, Warner Bros. Discovery greenlit a new cinematic universe in the mid-2040s, opting to introduce lesser-known characters through standalone projects. Captain Atom was selected to lead the reboot, due to the character's underutilized potential and thematic versatility. The project was formally announced in late 2047.

The film will be a tonal departure from traditional superhero fare, incorporating surreal visual storytelling, grounded military drama, and philosophical elements. Writers and directors have not been officially confirmed, but development is reportedly being guided by a creative committee led by new executives at DC Studios.

Cast
