Strangest Thing is an American science fiction television series created by Ethan Krantz for Netflix. Produced by Mythos Studios and Obelisk Entertainment, the first season premiered on October 11, 2024. The series blends horror, mystery, drama, and coming-of-age elements and has received critical praise for its atmosphere, writing, and ensemble cast.
Set in the early 1990s, the show follows a group of teenagers in the fictional town of Grange Hill, Oregon, after a strange celestial phenomenon begins to alter reality. As the boundaries between dimensions weaken, the group uncovers a secret research project known as The Echo Program, run by a defunct government facility buried beneath the mountains. A series of disappearances, shifting memories, and monstrous entities force the teens into a deadly game of survival — one tied to a girl with fractured powers and a past no one remembers.
Strangest Thing has been noted for its heavy thematic and stylistic influences from 1980s and 1990s genre media, particularly the works of David Lynch, Stephen King, James Cameron, and Hideaki Anno. The show has attracted a passionate fanbase and is considered one of Netflix’s most ambitious genre offerings since Stranger Things.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Strangest Thing takes place in the fictional mountain town of Grange Hill, Oregon, in the early 1990s. The story begins when a meteor-like object crashes into nearby Hollow Ridge, triggering a wave of bizarre occurrences: people go missing, animals behave violently, and static interference disrupts all communication. Six high school friends — Kit, Rowan, Danny, Asha, Leon, and June — witness the phenomenon and gradually become entangled in the mysteries surrounding a sealed underground facility, known locally as "The Below."
The group discovers that the impact awakened remnants of an experimental Cold War-era project called The Echo Program, designed to simulate parallel consciousness and manipulate dimensional rifts. As reality begins to fracture, they encounter a mysterious girl named Iris who seems connected to the event but has no memories of her past. As time loops, memory gaps, and spatial distortions increase, the town teeters on the brink of collapse — and the only way to stop it may lie in a past that never happened.
