Monster: The Hollywood Ripper is the upcoming fifth season of the American biographical crime drama anthology series Monster, created by Jane Holloway for HBO. Originally announced as Monster: The Zodiac Killer, the season was delayed and retooled after creative differences between Holloway and HBO executives. The new season will focus on Michael Gargiulo, known as the “Hollywood Ripper,” whose crimes in Los Angeles drew national attention for their connections to celebrity culture, sensational media coverage, and questions about predatory behavior in plain sight. It is scheduled to premiere in September 2033.[1]
Synopsis
The season will dramatize Michael Gargiulo’s crimes in Los Angeles, the investigation that brought him to trial, and the media frenzy that surrounded his case. Emphasis will be placed on the intersections of fame, fear, and celebrity culture, exploring how crime stories become public spectacles in a modern media landscape.[1]
Production
Development
On February 2, 2032, HBO confirmed that the fifth season of Monster would focus on the Zodiac case under the title The Zodiac Killer.[2] On August 28, 2032, episode titles and a release schedule were announced for the Zodiac concept.[3]
On November 12, 2032, HBO announced that the Zodiac storyline had been scrapped following creative differences with showrunner Jane Holloway. The season was rebranded as The Hollywood Ripper, shifting focus to Michael Gargiulo. Executives expressed concerns that covering another unsolved serial killer risked repeating formulas from earlier seasons.[1]
Budget
With the retooling, HBO confirmed that the production budget soared past $200 million, making it the costliest season in the anthology’s history. The increased costs were attributed to extended delays during rewrites, high-profile casting negotiations, Hollywood location shoots, and an emphasis on cinematic production values.[1]
Filming
Filming has not yet begun on the retooled season. Production is expected to commence in early 2033, with multiple Hollywood studio backlots and Los Angeles locations serving as key settings.[1]
Release
Monster: The Hollywood Ripper is set to premiere in September 2033 on HBO and Max, with episodes releasing weekly.[1]
