Netherbound is an upcoming American computer-animated fantasy adventure film based on the 2011 video game Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios. Produced by Mob Studios, Mob Productions, and Mojang Studios, it is intended to be the second film in the Minecraft Universe (MIU) and the second film in its opening storyline, "Chapter One: The Broken Seed". The film is directed by Nia DaCosta from a screenplay by Lena Cross, and stars the voices of Florence Pugh, Stephanie Hsu, Brian Tyree Henry, Dave Bautista, Mads Mikkelsen, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Development began during the initial planning of the Minecraft Universe, when Cross and Jackson Miller proposed using the second film to expand the franchise beyond the Overworld. DaCosta entered negotiations to direct in May 2026 and was formally announced alongside the MIU's first slate that July. Pugh, Hsu, and Henry are set to reprise their respective roles as Alex, Mina Quill, and Garrick from Minecraft: The First Night (2028), while Bautista, Mikkelsen, and Taylor-Joy portray characters originating from the Nether.

Netherbound is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 2, 2029.

Premise[edit | edit source]

Following the appearance of unstable portals throughout the Overworld, Alex, redstone engineer Mina Quill, and former village defender Garrick travel into the Nether to investigate the disturbances. Their arrival places them in the middle of a conflict between rival Piglin factions competing for control of the dimension's remaining portal network.

Voice cast[edit | edit source]

  • Florence Pugh as Alex, an experienced player and traveling mapmaker who enters the Nether while investigating the unstable portals appearing throughout the Overworld. Pugh reprises the role from Minecraft: The First Night.
  • Stephanie Hsu as Mina Quill, a redstone engineer whose research into the portal disturbances leads her into the Nether.
  • Brian Tyree Henry as Garrick, a former village defender who accompanies Alex and Mina on their expedition.
  • Dave Bautista as Korda, a Piglin commander associated with the fortified city of Aurum.
  • Mads Mikkelsen as Vael, an exiled Piglin ruler connected to one of the factions involved in the Nether's conflict.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Ember, an alchemist and member of Vael's family.

Taron Egerton is expected to reprise his role as Steve from Minecraft: The First Night, though the extent of his involvement has not been disclosed.

Development[edit | edit source]

Netherbound originated during the development of "Chapter One: The Broken Seed", the first group of interconnected films and television series in the Minecraft Universe. The creative team wanted the second film to expand the setting beyond the Overworld while maintaining a more focused narrative than the large crossover stories of the previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe.[1]

Lena Cross and Jackson Miller developed the initial concept while planning the wider franchise. Cross proposed presenting the Nether as a complete inhabited dimension with its own communities, governments, trade routes, and internal conflicts rather than solely as a hostile location visited by the Overworld characters. The filmmakers also wanted its creatures and materials to have roles within the dimension's culture and economy.[2]

The film was included in the first Minecraft Universe slate announced by Mob Studios on July 31, 2026. It was announced alongside Minecraft: The First Night, The Ender Crown, and Minecraft: The Broken Seed. Mob Studios described Netherbound as the second theatrical installment of the continuity and confirmed a November 2, 2029, release date.[3]

Nia DaCosta entered negotiations to direct in May 2026 after meeting with Cross, Miller, and producer Alex Brow. She was formally confirmed as director during the slate presentation. DaCosta said she was interested in treating the Nether as a dangerous fantasy civilization rather than a location designed only for action sequences.[4]

Cross wrote the screenplay and is also involved in the wider planning of the Minecraft Universe. Brow, Naomi Elridge, and Jackson Gold serve as producers. The film remains in early development, and Mob Studios has not announced when principal animation will begin.

Writing[edit | edit source]

Cross developed the screenplay from a story created with Miller. The film is expected to take place after Minecraft: The First Night, though Mob Studios has not disclosed how much time passes between the installments or which events from the first film directly lead into the sequel.

The story is centered on Alex rather than Steve. Cross said the decision allowed the filmmakers to explore how Alex's greater experience in the Overworld affects her response to a dimension whose rules, societies, and dangers are unfamiliar to her. Steve is expected to appear, but Pugh's Alex is described as the film's principal protagonist.[5]

The filmmakers developed several Piglin communities rather than portraying the species as a single unified group. Their relationship with gold is connected to the material's ability to resist aspects of the Nether's environment, while control of portal routes has become a major source of political and economic power. The screenplay also incorporates Striders, Hoglins, Ghasts, and other Nether creatures into the dimension's settlements and travel systems.[2]

Cross described the film as a fantasy adventure involving political conflict and survival. Although the broader instability of the Seed continues from The First Night, the primary story is intended to focus on the characters and factions within the Nether rather than extensively advancing every part of the franchise's mythology.

Specific details concerning Vael's plans, the origins of the conflict, and the film's connection to the Hollow King have not been disclosed.

Casting[edit | edit source]

Florence Pugh, Stephanie Hsu, and Brian Tyree Henry were announced as returning cast members during the July 2026 Minecraft Universe presentation. They reprise their roles as Alex, Mina Quill, and Garrick, respectively.[6]

Pugh was confirmed as the film's lead. DaCosta said Alex would be placed in a position where her experience no longer makes her the most knowledgeable person in the group, forcing her to rely on the Nether's inhabitants rather than approaching the dimension as an outsider who can solve its problems.

Hsu's Mina is expected to investigate the failing portals and the unfamiliar materials used to operate them. Henry's Garrick accompanies the expedition, though further information about their roles has not been revealed.

Dave Bautista was cast as Korda, a Piglin military commander. The character was created specifically for the rebooted continuity and has no connection to characters from the previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe. Bautista is expected to provide both voice work and physical performance reference for the role.

Mads Mikkelsen was cast as Vael, an exiled ruler involved in the Nether's conflict, while Anya Taylor-Joy joined as Ember, an alchemist connected to Vael. Their casting was reported shortly after the slate announcement.[7]

Taron Egerton is expected to reprise his role as Steve, but Mob Studios has not officially included him in the film's principal cast list. No additional cast members had been announced as of August 2026.

Animation and design[edit | edit source]

Early visual development began in 2026. The production team is designing several regions of the Nether rather than relying exclusively on lava lakes and Nether fortresses. Concept work includes settlements built around basalt formations, fungal forests, suspended structures, and large portal routes connecting distant territories.[8]

The Piglin city of Aurum is being designed as a vertical settlement constructed around a naturally occurring portal. Gold is used throughout its architecture for both cultural and practical reasons. Another faction, known as the Ash Court, is associated with ruined Bastions and mobile structures assembled from materials recovered across the Nether.

DaCosta said she wanted the dimension to feel physically hostile without making every location visually identical. The film is expected to use stronger contrasts, darker shadows, and more fluid camera movement than Minecraft: The First Night, while retaining the block-based visual language established for the MIU.

The studio has not announced the film's animation supervisor, composer, runtime, production budget, or anticipated production schedule.

Release[edit | edit source]

Netherbound is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 2, 2029.[9] It is intended to be the second film in the Minecraft Universe after Minecraft: The First Night, which is scheduled for release on June 9, 2028.

Future[edit | edit source]

The film is part of "Chapter One: The Broken Seed". Mob Studios has indicated that its events will contribute to the instability affecting the Minecraft Universe, though the studio has not disclosed the film's ending or its direct connections to later projects.

The third film in the continuity, The Ender Crown, is scheduled to be released on July 18, 2030.
