Veilbreak: Dead Signal is a browser-based survival shooter developed and published by Mob Productions. A spin-off of the ShooterofIO series, it entered public beta for PC web browsers on July 2, 2026, through Veilbreak: Dead Signal HQ.[1][2] The full release is scheduled for November 5, 2026.[3]
The current v1.0.4.8 beta edition contains two round-based maps. "Crownfall" follows Noah Mad, Jessica Carver, Emil Richter, and Silas Beckett inside a castle controlled by a sentient crown, while "Echoes of the Shadows" introduces Elias Voss, Mara Vale, Jonah Creed, and Lena Wraith at an erased estate preserved inside the Veil.[4][5] Both maps feature hidden Main Quests, unique enemies, separate boss arenas, map-specific Wonder Weapons, and unlockable opening and ending cutscenes.[6] Beta v1.0.4.8 added Guided Mode support for "Echoes of the Shadows", rebuilt Challenges around progressive tiers, and adjusted the Haymaker shotgun.[7]
Dead Signal combines round-based survival with persistent weapon progression, customizable Deployment Kits, Field Upgrades, Hex Capsules, challenges, cosmetics, and a ten-Prestige ranking system followed by Prestige Master levels.[8] Its perk system consists of eight supernatural upgrades called Oaths, each supported by three progression branches and a Mastery Path.[9][10] v1.0.3 removed the retired resource-focused Oath Scavenger's Sight and reduced the experience required to complete the Ultimate Oath Path from 20,160,000 to 17,920,000 XP.[11]
The project was originally announced as an incremental browser spin-off before expanding into a game with Multiplayer, Zombies, and a DMZ-inspired mode.[12] Mob Productions later removed the additional modes and rebuilt the project around Zombies, citing their limited quality and the stronger identity of the survival experience.[13] Later revisions removed the earlier maps "Hollow Pines" and "Forest of the Dead", retired Cursed, renamed Pack-a-Punch as the Weapon Forge, replaced Perks with Oaths, and rebuilt Augments as Oath Paths.[14]
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
In Zombies, the player moves through interconnected top-down combat areas while surviving increasingly difficult rounds of undead enemies. A match begins with a selected weapon and Field Upgrade from the Deployment Kit.[15] Players earn Essence from combat and objectives, using it to open routes, purchase ammunition and Oaths, acquire weapons from wall imprints or the Void Cache, raise weapon rarity at the Arsenal, and upgrade weapons through the Weapon Forge.[16] Scraps are earned outside the immediate match economy and are spent on Hex Capsule Cases, XP Tokens, and other account-level rewards.
Enemy health scales aggressively at higher rounds. Standard Zombies reach 1,045 health at Round 10, approximately 1,683 at Round 15, 7,030 at Round 30, 47,295 at Round 50, and more than 5.5 million by Round 100.[17] Effective high-round play therefore depends on Forge tiers, rarity upgrades, critical damage, armor, Oaths, Field Upgrades, Hex Capsules, and Wonder Weapons. Power-ups include Max Ammo, Double Points, Full Power, Nukes, and Fire Sales, although boss-class enemies are immune to instant-kill effects.[18]
The Weapon Forge replaces the earlier Pack-a-Punch terminology and raises the held weapon by one damage tier per purchase.[19] The Arsenal improves rarity separately, while the Void Cache provides random weapons and can award Ultra-class Wonder Weapons. Crownfall's Forge is located in the Throne Hall. The Umbra Weapon Forge in "Echoes of the Shadows" must be reconstructed by completing three hidden icon lockdowns, recovering an Iron Ingot and Copper Cable, building a Power Transmitter, and installing it in Umbra Sanctum.[20]
Weapons are divided into assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, light machine guns, marksman rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and launchers. Each weapon has persistent levels, attachments, statistics, and camouflage challenges.[21] Mastery camos include Gold, Diamond, Void, and Dark Matter. Weapon progression is retained when the player enters Prestige.
Crownfall's signature Wonder Weapon is the Staff of Wonder. It is claimed from the Crown Reliquary and can be transformed into Cinders, Tempest, Rot, and Ravens variants through separate castle mechanics.[22] Each form is required for a corresponding Crown Seal and for reforging the Fallen Crown. "Echoes of the Shadows" introduces Noah's Superistic Folly, an infinite-ammunition pistol that fires explosive energy orbs and uses an overheat meter instead of magazines.[23] Reaching maximum heat forces a two-second vent, close explosions can damage the player, and Forge Tier III grants an additional 25% damage increase.[24]
Oaths and Oath Paths[edit | edit source]
Oaths are passive upgrades purchased during a match from dedicated shrines. The eight Oaths are Ironblood, which increases health and softens heavy attacks; Quickhand, which improves reload speed and handling; Fleetstep, which improves sprinting and stamina; Deadeye, which increases critical effectiveness; Second Breath, which accelerates health regeneration; Voltaic Vigor, which stores an electrical charge for a manual shockwave; Undertow Tonic, which improves movement through water, mud, and slowing corruption; and Webweaver, which grants defensive web charges that stun nearby enemies.[9]
Each Oath has three normal Oath Paths containing eight tiers of permanent upgrades. The player selects one Oath and one path as a training focus, directing earned Oath XP into that branch.[10] Up to two unlocked nodes from the active path can be equipped. Completing all three normal paths unlocks the Oath's Mastery Path and an additional Mastery slot. Mastering all eight Oaths unlocks the Ultimate Oath Path.[25] The system replaced Augments, which had limited each Perk to one Major and one Minor modifier.[26]
Field Upgrades and Hex Capsules[edit | edit source]
Aether Shroud temporarily phases the player out of danger, repels enemies, and grants brief invulnerability. Shockcharge releases an electrical pulse that stuns nearby enemies, damages lesser undead, and weakens electrically aligned threats.[27] Field Upgrades charge through combat and can be disabled in Custom Games.
Hex Capsules are single-use consumables divided into Basic, Rare, and Epic tiers.[28] Basic Capsules include Second Wind, Cashback, Lucky Find, Dead Silence, Last Magazine, Anything But Time, and Emergency Exit. Rare Capsules include Shopping Free, Oaths Up, Bullet Storm, Contractor, Golden Touch, Ammo Lottery, Crowd Control, Recycle Bin, and Last Stand. Epic Capsules include Bank Heist, Wonder Roll, Time Freeze, Jackpot, Ultimate Upgrade, and Guardian Angel.[29] Capsule Cases use weighted rewards, with higher-cost cases providing improved Rare and Epic odds. The system replaced the older five-rarity GobbleGum economy.[30]
Modes[edit | edit source]
Standard is the principal round-based playlist and is available on Crownfall and "Echoes of the Shadows". It includes unrestricted rounds, full progression, Hex Capsules, map exploration, side objectives, Wonder Weapons, and the complete hidden Main Quest for each map.[31] Quest progress is communicated through dialogue, environmental reactions, and a Quest Items panel rather than a direct next-step marker.
Guided Mode is available on "Crownfall" and "Echoes of the Shadows". It displays direct Main Quest objectives, highlights relevant areas, lowers the pressure of learning quest routes, and uses round caps during investigation-heavy steps.[32][33] In "Echoes of the Shadows", Guided Mode preserves the full "Threefold Echo" quest rather than replacing it with a shortened version. Players still complete the Conduit Runes, Shadow Dynamo, Umbra Forge, Mourning Bloom sequence, Rune Clocks, Threefold Relics, Echo Trials, Shadow Anchors, Moonless Coronation, and the First Shadow encounter.[33] Surge is available on both maps and consists of 15 escalating combat stages in compact zones, with unlimited ammunition and a reward choice after each stage. Main Quests are disabled.[34]
Custom Games supports both maps and up to three AI-controlled allies.[35] Players can alter starting round, Essence, health, movement speed, enemy statistics, spawn rate, active enemy limits, weapon damage, ammunition, points, doors, power, Oaths, the Weapon Forge, Arsenal, Void Cache, Field Upgrades, armor, power-ups, bosses, and individual enemy types. Main Quests are disabled. Easier settings reduce XP, while qualifying difficulty increases add 0.01 each up to a maximum bonus of 0.05.[36]
Enemies and maps[edit | edit source]
Crownfall features Zombies, Sprinters, Armored Husks, Bile Spitters, Phase Wraiths, Cinder Hounds, Ironbound, and Triskelions.[37] The Hollow King is fought in the separate Fallen Court arena. The map contains the Fallen Road, Castle Courtyard, Royal Chapel, Royal Gardens, Throne Hall, Power Room, Crown Reliquary, Bell Tower, Crow Roost Aviary, Dungeon Cells, Rook Market, Crow Catacombs, Royal Crypt, Bell Orchard, Raven Watch, Crown Cloister, King's Vault, and Fallen Court.[38]
"Echoes of the Shadows" uses a largely unique roster consisting of Shadowbound, Veil Runners, Hushlings, Runebearers, Mirrorborn, Grand Mirrorborn, Triskelions, and the First Shadow.[39] Mirrorborn copy members of the playable crew, while the Grand Mirrorborn cycles between Elias, Mara, Jonah, and Lena. The map spans Breach Court, Gloam Street, Lantern Hall, Whispering Archive, Drowned Garden, Servants' Passage, East Courtyard, Chapel of Echoes, Black Undercroft, Hall of Portraits, Moon Observatory, Old Shadow Quarter, Voss Manor Foyer, Shattered Ballroom, Rune Library, Veil Vault, Moonless Roof, and Umbra Sanctum.[40]
Progression[edit | edit source]
Profile progression tracks level, XP, Scraps, kills, critical kills, rounds, best round, downs, matches, wins, Main Quest completions, weapon statistics, Oath progress, Capsules, challenges, cosmetics, and playlist records.[8] Career Rank runs from Level 1 to 55. Reaching Level 55 allows the player to enter Prestige while retaining weapons and cosmetics. There are ten Prestiges; completing Prestige 10 at Level 55 unlocks Prestige Master and raises the maximum level to 1,000.[41]
The Barracks displays lifetime level, current operator, calling card, emblem, statistics, Prestige icons, and unlocked cutscenes.[42] HUD themes unlock at Prestige 1, 3, 5, and 8. The Store sells separate General, Weapon, and Oath XP Tokens, each doubling only its matching progression track.[43] Profile data can also be exported and restored through a save file.[44] Beta v1.0.4.8 rebuilt Challenges around progressive tiers. Most repeatable or long-form Challenges now use three stages: Tier I as an initial milestone, Tier II as established progress, and Tier III as full completion. Existing compatible progress migrates into the new structure, and completed tiers can award XP, Scraps, or mastery-related rewards. The update also corrected an issue where the All category could show a Challenge as complete when only an earlier milestone had been satisfied.[45]
Plot[edit | edit source]
The Zombies storyline is titled "The Broken Veil". The Veil is a damaged boundary that records locations, people, rituals, and disasters as unstable copies. Dead systems can continue operating inside it, while imitations of living people can inherit memories and develop identities of their own.

| Noah Mad, Jessica Carver, Emil Richter, and Silas Beckett follow a black-feather signal to Crownfall, a castle that assigns intruders the roles of prisoner, witness, executioner, and heir. After restoring its machinery, they open a royal book, bind Crownlight, solve four rune circles, and assemble a Raven Bell from components hidden behind symbol and sound puzzles. The Bell opens the Crown Reliquary, where the crew kills an Ironbound, recovers the Royal Conduit, and claims the Staff of Wonder. Its Cinders, Tempest, Rot, and Ravens forms break four Crown Seals and expose the remains of the Fallen Crown. The crew recovers its Eye, Spine, and Jaw, reforges the Crown, and carries it to the Throne Hall, opening the Fallen Court. They defeat the Hollow King, but the throne splits to reveal thousands of crowns built for other worlds. Crownfall is revealed as one component of a larger Veil system, and the surviving crowns begin to awaken. | |||

| Elias Voss, Mara Vale, Jonah Creed, and Lena Wraith enter the erased Voss estate, where corridors extend beyond the manor and portraits remember them before their births. They restore four Conduit Runes, rebuild the Umbra Weapon Forge, awaken a Mourning Bloom, and summon Ilyana Voss. After charging Rune Clocks, they claim Noah's Superistic Folly and recover the Veil Prism, Mourning Sigil, and Shadow Codex. The crew restores the Relics and completes four personal Echo Trials, allowing Ilyana to be reconstructed. They destroy four Shadow Anchors, defeat a Grand Mirrorborn during the Moonless Coronation, and open the Threefold Rune Gate. In the Hollow Court, the Relics bind and defeat the First Shadow. The gate seals with copied versions of the crew trapped beyond it, but a signal escapes. A far larger entity answers from outside reality, revealing that the estate was only its first door. | |||
Development and release[edit | edit source]
Development began in March 2025 as an experimental browser project connected to the ShooterofIO series.[46] Mob Productions announced it in June 2025 as an incremental game inspired by Cookie Clicker, before expanding the concept to include Multiplayer, Zombies, and a DMZ-inspired mode.[12][47] Zombies became the most developed component because its round-based structure supported combat, persistent progression, map routes, hidden quests, and boss fights.[48] The game entered public beta on July 2, 2026.[1]
Shortly after release, Mob Productions removed Multiplayer and DMZ and announced that the project would continue as a Zombies-only title.[13] Menus, challenges, progression, and the store were reorganized around the mode. The studio later removed "Hollow Pines" and "Forest of the Dead", retaining only Crownfall and the newly developed "Echoes of the Shadows" for the current lineup.[49] Crownfall was rebuilt around a larger connected castle, four Staff variants, environmental puzzles, and a multi-phase Hollow King fight. "Echoes of the Shadows" was designed as a more advanced map with extensive interiors, multiple floors, imitation enemies, and the Threefold Relics quest.[50]
Noah Mad and Jessica Carver remained from earlier versions, while Edward Richtofen and William Peck were rewritten as Emil Richter and Silas Beckett.[51] "Echoes of the Shadows" introduced Elias Voss, Mara Vale, Jonah Creed, and Lena Wraith as a separate crew. Mob Productions said the second cast allowed the map to explore memory, inheritance, and copied identity without reusing the same four characters.[52]
The rebrand also replaced several inherited labels: Perks became Oaths, Pack-a-Punch became the Weapon Forge, the Mystery Box became the Void Cache, GobbleGums became Hex Capsules, and Augments became Oath Paths.[53] v1.0.3 removed Scavenger's Sight, its shrine, effect, path trees, menu entry, and progression data. Ultimate Oath completion was changed from nine mastered Oaths to eight, and development commentary was removed from menu headers.[11] Beta v1.0.4.8 was released on July 17, 2026. The update added Guided Mode support for "Echoes of the Shadows", changed the Challenge system from mostly single-state objectives into progressive tiers, corrected the All-category completion display, and reduced the Haymaker's dominance through damage and reload adjustments.[54]
The full release is scheduled for November 5, 2026, with Crownfall and "Echoes of the Shadows" as its two principal launch maps.[3] Mob Productions described the remaining beta period as focused on balancing, pathfinding, interface readability, and quest reliability rather than rapidly increasing the map count.[55]
Promotion[edit | edit source]
The project was first promoted as ShooterofIO: Online, with early material emphasizing browser accessibility and progression.[12] After Zombies became the sole mode, Mob Productions introduced the Veilbreak: Dead Signal title, darker visual identity, and the Veil storyline.[56] Crownfall marketing focused on the upside-down castle, Staff variants, and Hollow King, while "Echoes of the Shadows" was promoted through its manor interiors, new crew, Mirrorborn enemies, Shadow Dynamo, and Noah's Superistic Folly.[57][58]

The v1.0.3 beta received generally favorable reviews. Critics praised its focused Zombies direction, two large maps, progression, Main Quests, and amount of content for a browser game, while criticizing its basic presentation, pathfinding, dense systems, and lack of online cooperative play.[66][67][62] Several reviewers considered the removal of Multiplayer, DMZ, and the weaker maps necessary for establishing a clearer identity.
IGN awarded the game 8/10, calling v1.0.3 the first edition that felt designed around a finished structure rather than accumulated prototypes.[66] It praised Standard, Guided, Surge, and Custom Games, but considered the absence of cooperative multiplayer the most obvious weakness. PC Gamer scored it 82/100 and praised its browser accessibility, persistent weapon levels, save export, Prestige, and variable Custom Games XP, while criticizing repetitive room visuals and the amount of explanation required by Oath Paths.[67]
Crownfall was praised for its landmarks, Staff of Wonder variants, and quest design. GamesRadar+ highlighted the Raven Bell, Crown Seals, and slowed Crown escort, noting that "The Fallen Crown" relied more on symbols, sounds, and weapon forms than repeated kill circles.[65] The Hollow King fight was also well received for using a separate arena and keeping the reforged Crown and Staff variants mechanically relevant.[63]
"Echoes of the Shadows" was generally considered the more ambitious map. Reviewers praised its interiors, multiple floors, shortcuts, unique crew, Conduit Runes, and imitation-focused enemy roster.[66][67] Mirrorborn were singled out for giving the map a stronger identity than ordinary health or speed variants. Criticism focused on its dark palette, crowded visual effects, and the difficulty of recognizing false copies during combat.
Noah's Superistic Folly received a mixed response. Its explosive orbs, infinite ammunition, and heat mechanic were praised, but the forced vent and self-damage could become disruptive during crowded fights.[64] Oaths and Oath Paths were widely viewed as improvements over Perks and Augments, although the 17.92 million XP required for complete Ultimate mastery was considered excessive.[69] Eurogamer gave the game three stars and argued that the cleaner terminology did not fully solve its tendency to add a separate progression layer to every system.[62]
Hex Capsules were received more positively than the old GobbleGum economy because they used only three rarities and clear Scrap costs.[70] Guided Mode was praised for making Crownfall accessible, while Beta v1.0.4.8 later extended Guided support to "Echoes of the Shadows".[71] Surge was viewed as an effective shorter playlist, while Custom Games received praise for its extensive rules and transparent XP calculation. AI bots were considered useful but unreliable in narrow interior routes.[61] Guided Mode was praised for making Crownfall accessible, but reviewers criticized the lack of Guided support for "Echoes of the Shadows". Surge was viewed as an effective shorter playlist, while Custom Games received praise for its extensive rules and transparent XP calculation. AI bots were considered useful but unreliable in narrow interior routes.
Presentation and technical limitations remained the most consistent criticism. Reviews noted simple geometry, limited animation, dark rooms, enemy navigation failures, and occasional quest interactions becoming unavailable.[68][62] Rock Paper Shotgun recommended the game, arguing that its rough appearance concealed thoughtful quest and progression design.[68] The ability to export profile data was praised as protection against browser storage loss.
Audience reception[edit | edit source]
Player response was generally positive. The Zombies-only direction, map reset, and original terminology were welcomed, although the removal of "Hollow Pines" and "Forest of the Dead" divided players who had completed or preferred the older maps.[72][73] Crownfall remained popular for Guided Mode and high-round attempts, while "Echoes of the Shadows" produced more Main Quest discussion because of its longer relic, trial, and gate sequence.[74]
The removal of Scavenger's Sight was also divisive. Players praised the reduced Ultimate Oath requirement but requested clearer compensation for previously earned XP.[75] Negative feedback concentrated on pathfinding, menu density, dark visual contrast, old terminology surviving in unused data, and the absence of online co-op.[76]
Player data[edit | edit source]
Mob Productions reported that Crownfall had the higher number of completed matches because of Guided Mode, while "Echoes of the Shadows" produced longer sessions and a lower Main Quest completion rate.[77] Surge was the most frequently selected playlist for sessions under 30 minutes, while Standard accounted for most weapon and Oath XP. The November 5 release is planned as the end of the beta label rather than a separate paid relaunch.[3]
