Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story chronicles the case of the real-life brothers convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez. While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed - and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole - that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.[1]
Cast and characters[edit | edit source]

Born in Cuba, he is a wealthy and powerful businessman in the entertainment industry, serving as an executive at RCA Records and the CEO of Live Entertainment. Lyle and Erik allege that they killed José in self-defense after years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.[2]

On November 7, 2022, Netflix announced that it had been renewed as an anthology series based on famous convicted killers.[5][6] On May 1, 2023, it was confirmed that the second season, titled Monsters, will focus on Lyle and Erik Menéndez, two brothers who were convicted for the 1989 murders of their parents in Beverly Hills, California.[7]
Casting[edit | edit source]
On June 29, 2023, Deadline reported that Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez were cast as Erik and Lyle Menéndez, respectively.[8] On January 15, 2024, it was announced that Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny had joined the cast as José and Kitty, respectively.[9] That same day, Nathan Lane was cast as Dominick Dunne.[10] On February 1, 2024, Ari Graynor joined as Leslie Abramson.[11] Leslie Grossman was added that same month as Judalon Smyth.[12]
Filming[edit | edit source]
Production for the season was initially set for September 2023, but was postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WAG strikes.[13] Principal photography took place from March to July 2024 in Los Angeles, California.[14]

Julia and Thomas Newman composed the original score.[15] The official soundtrack album was released on various streaming platforms on September 13, 2024, prior to the release of the season.[16]
