Primal Kingdom is an upcoming American science fiction action thriller film directed by Ava Renshaw and written by Kellan Wright. Intended as the first entry in a new shared cinematic universe known as the Primal Universe, the film stars Dev Patel, Florence Pugh, and Lance Reddick, with Sophie Thatcher and Hiroyuki Sanada in supporting roles.
Development of the film was first reported in April 2023, with pre-production having quietly been underway for several months. Renshaw was officially confirmed as director in mid-2023, and principal casting followed shortly after. Filming took place in British Columbia and Arizona between September 2024 and February 2025. The project is being produced by Solis Gate Productions and marks Wright's first major studio screenplay following his work in television.
Primal Kingdom is scheduled to be released in the United States by Aetherlight Pictures on July 18, 2025.
Premise[edit | edit source]
In the year 2284, Earth has been reshaped by a mysterious terraforming event known as "The Bloom." Vast regions have transformed into autonomous, intelligent ecosystems governed by bio-organic entities known as Primals. Humanity’s remnants are divided between fortified domes and nomadic tribes. When a dormant Primal awakens near the last human settlement, a reluctant biologist, a grieving soldier, and an exiled warlord must journey into the heart of the Green Zone to find the source — and determine if the Earth itself is trying to erase them.
Cast[edit | edit source]
- Dev Patel as Dr. Arden Vale — a xenobotanist haunted by the failure of his Bloom suppression algorithm.
- Florence Pugh as Commander Elira Nox — a hardened soldier leading the mission after the death of her brother.
- Lance Reddick as The Speaker — a mysterious emissary of the Primals who speaks in riddles and echoes.
- Sophie Thatcher as Kaelin “Scorch” Ryne — a teenage scavenger raised in the ruins outside the Domes.
- Hiroyuki Sanada as General Ryosuke Tanaka — a war criminal turned monk who guides the team through forbidden zones.
Production[edit | edit source]
Development[edit | edit source]
Primal Kingdom was originally conceived in 2020 as a graphic novel concept by screenwriter Kellan Wright, who pitched the idea as “Annihilation meets Apocalypse Now in a living jungle.” The rights were acquired by Solis Gate Productions in late 2022, with Ava Renshaw attached to direct following her work on the indie thriller *Cloudform*.
The script went through three major rewrites before receiving a greenlight in early 2024. The film marks the first in a planned series within the *Primal Universe*, which includes sequels, streaming series, and tie-in games currently in development.
Filming[edit | edit source]
Principal photography began in September 2024 in British Columbia, with key sequences filmed in a constructed jungle biome within an abandoned NASA hydro-complex in Arizona. Filming wrapped in February 2025 after 107 days of production.
Visual effects are being handled by NebulaFrame VFX, with creature designs developed by veteran conceptual artist Julian Orr (*Dune: Part Two*, *The Last of Us*).
Music[edit | edit source]
The film’s score is composed by Kevin Kiner, who described the music as “visceral, biological, and unpredictable — like the jungle itself is reacting.” The official soundtrack will release digitally alongside the film in July 2025.
Marketing[edit | edit source]
The first teaser trailer debuted on 15 March 2025 during a major sci-fi convention panel in Seattle, where the film was described as “a philosophical war story hidden inside a survival epic.” Viral marketing campaigns followed, including an interactive site mapping the Bloom Zones and AR filters allowing users to simulate Primal encounters.
A full theatrical trailer premiered on 2 May 2025.
Release[edit | edit source]
Primal Kingdom is scheduled to be released on 18 July 2025 in the United States, with international releases staggered throughout late July. It will be available in IMAX and Dolby Cinema formats.
Future[edit | edit source]
Solis Gate Productions has confirmed plans for a trilogy, with the sequel already in early development under the working title Primal Exodus. The studio also intends to develop a prequel streaming series exploring the origin of The Bloom, set decades before the events of the film.
