Call of Duty: Dark Warfare III is a 2032 first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the sequel to Call of Duty: Dark Warfare II (2030) and the third installment in the Dark Warfare sub-series. The game was released worldwide on October 27, 2032, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

Set during the final stages of the global Veil Crisis, the game follows the collapse of international governments, military coalitions, and societal infrastructure as dimensional fractures spread uncontrollably across Earth. The campaign centers on Elias Ward, Maya Solano, and the Vanguard Coalition as they attempt to stop a radical organization known as Dominion from initiating the "Final Crossing", an event intended to permanently merge reality with the Veil.

The game also concludes the original Zombies storyline introduced in Call of Duty: Dark Warfare (2028). Following the sacrifice of Edward Richtofen during the events of Call of Duty: Dark Warfare II, Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki awaken separately across fractured realities with little memory of their previous journeys. As reality itself begins collapsing permanently, the three are gradually drawn back together while the Architect, an ancient intelligence hidden within the Veil, attempts to rebuild existence according to its own design.

Dark Warfare III received critical acclaim upon release, with praise directed toward its atmosphere, scale, narrative ambition, visual presentation, and Zombies mode. Critics particularly praised the emotional conclusion of the Veil Saga, with several publications describing the Zombies finale as one of the most ambitious narratives in the history of the franchise. Call of Duty: Dark Warfare III expands upon the gameplay systems introduced in the previous two installments while emphasizing environmental instability, large-scale destruction, and survival-focused combat. Campaign missions feature dynamic weather systems, shifting level geometry caused by Veil fractures, civilian evacuation scenarios, and large connected combat spaces spanning multiple locations simultaneously.

The campaign introduces Collapse Events, scripted and unscripted battlefield events where reality itself destabilizes during missions. Buildings may phase in and out of existence, entire sections of levels can be replaced by alternate environments, and enemy units may become displaced between timelines. Players also gain access to advanced battlefield equipment developed from recovered Veil technology, including distortion grenades, temporary dimensional shields, and signal disruption devices.

Multiplayer introduces Fracture Operations, a new large-scale mode involving AI-controlled military factions fighting alongside players during active Veil storms. Maps dynamically evolve during matches through destruction, blackout conditions, weather changes, and temporary dimensional ruptures that alter traversal routes and combat visibility.

The Operator Doctrine system returns with expanded progression trees and role-specific equipment. New doctrines include Saboteur, Sentinel, Phantom, and Exile. Gunsmith also returns with expanded conversion systems allowing weapons to transition between multiple combat roles through modular receiver platforms.

The Zombies mode continues the round-based gameplay structure introduced in the previous games while significantly expanding quest systems, hidden easter eggs, environmental storytelling, Wonder Weapon crafting, and progression mechanics. By 2035, Veil fractures have spread across every continent, destabilizing governments, military infrastructure, and communication systems worldwide. Entire cities periodically disappear before reappearing partially altered or destroyed, while civilian populations increasingly experience hallucinations, memory loss, and psychological instability linked to prolonged Veil exposure.

Elias Ward and Maya Solano operate as part of Vanguard Coalition, a multinational resistance force formed after the collapse of several major governments during the aftermath of the Black Meridian Incident. Coalition intelligence intercepts evidence that a hidden organization known as Dominion has begun constructing stabilization towers designed to intentionally merge reality with the Veil permanently.

Dominion is led by Dr. Lucien Vale, a former physicist involved with Helix Division during the events of Dark Warfare II. Vale believes humanity can no longer survive within a stable singular reality and instead must evolve into beings capable of existing simultaneously across multiple timelines. To achieve this, Dominion intends to trigger a convergence event known as the Final Crossing.

Ward and Solano travel across collapsing cities, abandoned military zones, flooded coastlines, quarantined districts, and active warzones searching for the remaining stabilization towers. During operations in Tokyo, Berlin, São Paulo, and Chicago, Coalition forces encounter increasingly aggressive Veil-corrupted entities capable of altering physical space and destabilizing battlefield environments.

As the Veil weakens further, reality itself becomes increasingly unstable. Soldiers vanish mid-combat, entire military units become trapped within repeating time loops, and alternate versions of destroyed cities begin appearing within populated areas. Ward experiences recurring visions of Edward Richtofen warning him that the Veil is "remembering every broken world at once."

The campaign eventually reveals that the Veil is no longer merely collapsing reality, but actively attempting to reconstruct existence according to fragmented memories gathered from dying timelines. Dominion intends to control this reconstruction process using the Ascension Engine, a massive machine hidden beneath the ruins of Geneva.

Coalition forces launch a global assault against Dominion during a catastrophic Veil storm that engulfs much of Europe. Ward and Solano infiltrate the Ascension Engine while military forces attempt to hold back Veil-corrupted armies emerging across the continent.

Inside the Engine, Vale reveals that repeated interference with the Veil has already doomed the original reality. According to him, the only remaining option is to guide the collapse and create a stable merged existence rather than allow total annihilation. Solano rejects his ideology, arguing that humanity deserves the right to survive naturally rather than become part of an artificial reconstruction.

The campaign culminates in a battle within the collapsing core of the Ascension Engine as the boundaries between realities disintegrate entirely. Ward kills Vale and overloads the Engine, temporarily halting the convergence process. However, the destruction triggers a massive shockwave across the Veil, causing fractures worldwide to become permanently visible in the sky.

In the final scene, Ward and Solano observe the fractured horizon as military communications from around the world abruptly cease. A distorted transmission from an unknown voice states: "The cycle has begun again."

Unable to remember the events leading to his arrival, Dempsey begins hearing distorted radio broadcasts from Edward Richtofen warning that the Veil is no longer contained. As Dempsey searches the city for survivors, he encounters echoes of military units trapped within endless loops of destruction while uncovering evidence that the city itself has become a dimensional anchor holding multiple realities together. By restoring power to an abandoned underground transit network, Dempsey activates a signal capable of reaching beyond the Veil itself. After battling through collapsing skyscrapers and defeating the Hollow Warden beneath the city, Dempsey witnesses the Rift Crown consume the skyline entirely as Takeo Masaki’s voice finally answers the signal from somewhere beyond reality.
2"Sanctum"October 27, 2032 (2032-10-27)
Takeo awakens within Sanctum, an enormous monastery constructed upon floating stone structures drifting endlessly through the Veil. The monks who once inhabited Sanctum worshipped the Veil as a spiritual force capable of preserving consciousness after death, but the monastery has long since fallen into ruin after becoming overrun by corrupted entities known as the Blind Ones. As Takeo traverses Sanctum’s temples, catacombs, ritual chambers, and fractured gardens, he gradually recovers fragmented memories of previous cycles involving himself, Dempsey, Nikolai, and Richtofen. He eventually discovers that the monks imprisoned an entity called the Witness beneath the monastery centuries earlier after it began consuming the memories of the dead. Using rituals hidden throughout Sanctum, Takeo reseals the Witness before opening a stable fracture capable of reconnecting him with Dempsey. However, before escaping, Takeo uncovers records suggesting that Nikolai Belinski may still be alive within the deepest layers of the Veil.
3"Necropolis"February 14, 2033 (2033-02-14)
Dempsey and Takeo journey into Necropolis, a colossal underground city constructed entirely from the remains of collapsed realities. The dead from countless timelines have accumulated within the city over centuries, creating endless graveyards illuminated by Veil energy beneath a blackened sky. The crew discover that Necropolis is ruled by the Ferryman, an ancient being responsible for guiding lost souls through the Veil who has since become corrupted and now traps souls within the city to increase his own power. As they traverse ruined cathedrals, burial tunnels, flooded crypts, and moving funeral trains, the crew encounter fragmented echoes of previous cycles involving themselves and Richtofen. Dempsey becomes increasingly convinced that they have failed to stop the Veil countless times before. After battling across a massive burial train moving through the depths of the city and defeating the Ferryman, the crew recover a relic capable of tracking surviving consciousnesses through fractured realities. Using the relic, they finally locate Nikolai.
4"The Deep Below"May 22, 2033 (2033-05-22)
The crew descend into the Deep Below, a submerged dimension hidden beneath the Veil where failed realities slowly sink into oblivion. Massive drowned structures drift endlessly beneath black oceans while colossal creatures move through the darkness below the water. Nikolai is discovered trapped aboard an abandoned Soviet research vessel consumed by Veil corruption. Having survived alone within the Deep Below for years, Nikolai has become psychologically unstable and initially mistakes Dempsey and Takeo for hallucinations. Throughout the map, the crew uncover records revealing that the Deep Below serves as a graveyard for failed realities rejected by the Veil itself, containing the remnants of civilizations erased across countless cycles. After repairing the vessel and escaping the abyss while pursued by enormous Veil entities beneath the water, Nikolai regains fragments of his memories regarding Richtofen’s sacrifice and warns the others that the Architect may still be alive.
5"Dominion"August 20, 2033 (2033-08-20)
Following signals hidden within the Ferryman’s relic, the reunited crew travel to Dominion, a reality artificially constructed by the Architect using fragments of destroyed timelines. Dominion initially appears peaceful, populated by ordinary citizens living beneath an artificial sky, but the crew gradually discover that every inhabitant is merely a reconstructed memory sustained by the Architect itself. The reality exists solely to preserve the illusion of stability while the rest of existence collapses. Edward Richtofen unexpectedly reappears within Dominion, partially fused with Veil energy following his sacrifice during The Final Eclipse. Richtofen reveals that the Architect survived by scattering fragments of itself across multiple realities and has now begun rebuilding existence according to its own design. As Dominion destabilizes, the crew battle through collapsing districts and destroy the reality’s central anchor, forcing the Architect to reveal its true form before escaping into the deepest regions of the Veil.
6"End of Everything"November 19, 2033 (2033-11-19)
In the final chapter of the original Veil Saga, Richtofen, Dempsey, Nikolai, and Takeo travel beyond the remaining boundaries of reality itself to confront the Architect within the Null Realm, a dimension existing outside time and space where every collapsed reality eventually converges. The Null Realm continuously reshapes itself using fragments from previous maps and timelines, causing the crew to revisit distorted locations from across the trilogy while confronting corrupted echoes of themselves and remnants of previous failed cycles. The Architect reveals that it was created long before humanity existed as a system designed to preserve existence by endlessly recycling dying realities into new cycles. The crew ultimately learn that every attempt to stop the Veil throughout history merely restarted the cycle rather than ending it. Richtofen concludes that the only way to truly destroy the cycle is to sever the Veil completely, even if doing so erases every fractured reality connected to it. During the final battle, the crew activate ancient stabilizers hidden throughout the Null Realm while fighting manifestations of previous cycles and the Architect’s physical form. Richtofen ultimately sacrifices himself once again, using the Sleeper shard to collapse the Veil permanently from within. As the Null Realm begins disintegrating, Dempsey, Nikolai, and Takeo escape through a final fracture moments before the Veil collapses entirely. The ending shows the three awakening together in a normal world untouched by fractures or undead outbreaks with no memory of the cycles they endured, while a final radio transmission from Richtofen fades quietly into static.

Call of Duty: Dark Warfare III entered development immediately following the release of Dark Warfare II. According to Air Studios, the project was designed from the beginning as the conclusion of the original Veil Saga and was intended to provide narrative closure for both the campaign and Zombies storylines established throughout the trilogy.

The campaign was developed with a significantly larger scale than previous entries, featuring worldwide collapse scenarios, large-scale military battles, dynamic weather systems, and extensive environmental destruction. The development team described the campaign as the franchise’s "most apocalyptic military experience" at the time.

Air Studios expanded its Zombies development division substantially during production due to the increasing popularity of the mode throughout the Dark Warfare series. The developers stated that the primary goal of Dark Warfare III Zombies was to deliver an emotional and definitive ending to the Veil storyline while still preserving the mystery and surrealism associated with the mode.

Several maps underwent lengthy development cycles due to their technical complexity. Shattered Veil required new systems allowing environments to phase dynamically between realities during gameplay, while End of Everything was described internally as one of the most technically ambitious Zombies maps ever created because of its constantly transforming structure and large-scale dimensional effects.

Dark Warfare III was officially revealed on May 25, 2032, with a cinematic trailer showing cities across the world collapsing beneath enormous Veil fractures while military broadcasts attempted to contain widespread panic. The trailer concluded with a distorted appearance from Edward Richtofen and the phrase "THE END BEGINS."

A full gameplay reveal occurred during Call of Duty Next in August 2032, showcasing campaign missions, multiplayer systems, and the Zombies map Shattered Veil.

A multiplayer beta was held in September 2032 across all platforms. Feedback from the beta led to balancing adjustments for Fracture Events, weapon recoil tuning, and visibility improvements during Veil storm conditions.
