"Chapter One: Signal Noise" is the first episode of the second season the American science fiction horror drama television series The Other Town. The 9th episode overall, the episode was directed by Kari Skogland, written by Alex Garland, and released on October 22, 2027, on Netflix.
Three months after the Other Town’s containment, Thomas Kerr vanishes after being stalked by an animal-like humanoid. Elaine suffers disturbing visions as memories of the incident resurface for Evan and Claire, while most of Northpoint remains unaware. Ben Holloway reunites with Mara after escaping the Other Town, and Noah briefly encounters a portal. Inside the Other Town, the creature—calling itself the Warewolf—kills Kerr and declares its intent to cross over.
"Ash Still Warm" received a generally positive critical reception, with reviewers praising its restrained escalation, unsettling atmosphere, and the introduction of the Warewolf as a morally driven antagonist rather than a purely monstrous presence. Elaine’s deteriorating condition and the episode’s focus on selective memory retention were highlighted as effective continuations of the first season’s themes. However, some criticism was directed toward the episode’s deliberate pacing and limited character interaction, with reviewers noting that several emotional beats were deferred in favor of establishing the season’s broader threat.
Plot[edit | edit source]
In 1988, Thomas Kerr stands alone behind his half-collapsed barn on the outskirts of Northpoint, staring into a dying burn pit as a faint radio hum bleeds through the night. Shaken by guilt and memory, Thomas whispers an apology before the embers flare and the hum deepens. A tall, unmoving presence emerges just beyond the treeline, unseen but unmistakable. As Thomas insists that it is over, the ground seems to tighten beneath him, the radio cuts to silence, and his scream never carries, marking his sudden disappearance.
The next morning, Northpoint appears restored on the surface, with fresh paint, ringing church bells, and a banner welcoming residents back. Beneath the normalcy, townspeople visibly struggle with unplaceable emotions—grief, guilt, and fear without context—as memories resurface unevenly. At the Carter house, Elaine sits in silence, sensing a pressure rather than a sound, and confirms to Evan that something has shifted. When Evan asks if the change is coming from the Other Town, Elaine hesitates and admits that whatever moved felt deliberate, suggesting intent rather than instability.
At Northpoint High School, students gather awkwardly, uncertain how to interact now that something intangible has changed. Mara observes others pretending everything is fine, while Lucas continues filming out of habit. Claire senses that the school itself feels wrong, as if the halls remember more than the students do, and the bell’s delayed reaction underscores the town’s fractured awareness. Meanwhile, Sheriff Rowan Hale reviews a missing persons report for Thomas Kerr and immediately recognizes the name. He orders a previously sealed file to be reopened as the faint hum pulses through the station, confirming his fear that the past is no longer staying buried.
That night, Elaine works in the Carter house basement, monitoring unstable signals on aging equipment meant to contain the phenomenon. Evan confronts her, believing she promised this was over, but Elaine clarifies that she only stopped the forgetting, not the consequences. She explains that the town is now remembering unevenly, and that something within the Other Town has noticed this imbalance, signaling a new phase rather than a resolution.
Search teams later comb the woods near Thomas Kerr’s property and discover his boots carefully placed at the treeline, with no tracks beyond them. Though a searcher claims to see blood, there is only scorched earth and warm ash, reinforcing the unnatural nature of his disappearance as the hum quietly returns. Elsewhere, Mara questions her mother Margaret about Thomas Kerr, and though Margaret denies knowing him, her involuntary flinch confirms a hidden connection and unspoken guilt.
The episode culminates when Elaine wakes to a violent signal spike and rushes to the basement, where distorted footage from the woods briefly reveals a tall, humanoid figure where Thomas vanished. Its shape suggests something wolf-like, yet unnervingly still and incomplete. When the figure subtly turns toward Elaine and Evan, the hum cuts out and a calm voice states that Thomas remembered too late. As whispers spread through Northpoint and the idea takes hold that something is hunting specific people, a silent silhouette watches the town from the woods, patient and deliberate, as the hum resumes like steady breathing.
