Development[edit | edit source]

Discussing the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, which saw the return of film rights to Minecraft and the other games for example Minecraft Dungeons (2020) and Minecraft Legends (2023), allowing Mob Productions to produce more films due to them being under Disney. Negotiations began with Freddie Goodwin in June 2016, after the acquisition was complete. Goodwin at first felt the original short films had been done well-enough to give a good excuse to not develop more films, and focus on original content. A few weeks later, Goodwin was approached by Shawn Levy and he asked to direct a film if he chose to develop more films. He agreed and began work on Steve & Alex: Guardians of the Overworld. During development, the team were aiming at a December 2020 release date. Due to issues with making a story and the COVID-19 pandemic, the team had to delay the film until 2024, which was again delayed by Disney due to lack of quality in 20% of the film.

In June 2019, Gustin mistakenly confirmed he had already finished half of his lines and revealed the title to be "Steve & Alex: Guardians of the Overworld". By September 2019, leaks reported that Jenna Ortega and Owen Wilson were set to reprise their roles, though Goodwin pubically debunked the rumors.

Shortly after the filming process was complete, Disney delayed the film until 2026 and ordered a remake of multiple scenes in order to make it releasable as the film was at that stage deemed "unreleasable". By 2021, the film had begun reshoots for 80% of the film, whilst only 20% of it was deemed unreleasable by Disney. Goodwin pubically confirmed he wanted to "rewrite the film" to ensure it worked and was better. He announced the film would lead into the real game's release in 2011.
