Barney: Love and Dismemberment is an upcoming Australian psychological slasher horror film produced by Alex Brow and Maddison Grey. Distributed by Seismic Releasing, the film serves as the fourth entry in the Distorted Innocence Universe, a shared horror franchise centred around corrupted childhood icons, media-induced trauma, and analog unreality.

The film is a twisted reinterpretation of the children’s television character Barney the Dinosaur, inspired by public domain folklore and deconstructionist parody. It follows a group of filmmakers investigating the site of a once-popular children's show, only to find themselves stalked by a deranged figure known as "The Purple Father"—a monstrous relic of forgotten fame who claims to "love you... to pieces."

Produced on a modest $500,000 budget, Barney: Love and Dismemberment has already generated online buzz for its grotesque premise, surreal tone, and its deeper mythology tied to ongoing Distorted Innocence lore. It is expected to premiere in late 2028 as part of the DIU's second phase.

Premise[edit | edit source]

In 1999, a cheerful taping day on the set of a Barney-style television show descends into horror when the entire crew is violently murdered on camera. The actor in the costume survives, horribly burned and left behind in the wreckage. He vanishes, presumed dead.

In 2028, a team of documentary filmmakers returns to the same now-abandoned studio to investigate the massacre and uncover what truly happened. But as they dig deeper into forgotten tapes, cultic fan clubs, and the surviving remnants of the show's history, they awaken something that never wanted to be remembered. A figure in purple still lurks in the dark — and he’s been waiting for new friends to love.

Development[edit | edit source]

Following the sleeper success of The Teeth Under My Pillow (2026), EtherGlass Pictures announced a new entry in the Distorted Innocence Universe centred on a corrupted Barney analogue. The announcement followed legal clearance allowing the use of parody and derivative work based on public domain elements of early 1990s children's programming.

Producer Alex Brow called the film “a descent into cultural amnesia and parasocial collapse,” explaining that it would weaponise nostalgic innocence. “We’re not just twisting Barney — we’re exposing the idea of childhood comfort as something that demands worship, then punishment.”[1]

In a subsequent interview, Brow elaborated that the opening massacre was “a betrayal, not just a murder.” He stated, “This isn’t a slasher about a guy in a suit. It’s about what happens when the mask believes it’s owed your loyalty — even after death.”[2]

The film is being developed in South Australia with plans for practical creature effects, VHS-layered cinematography, and the use of miniature studio sets for flashback sequences. Early animatics suggest the presence of fanatical cultists, reverse-broadcast incantations, and a child-viewer echo chamber known internally as the “Praise Booth.”

Marketing[edit | edit source]

In August 2027, a teaser poster was unveiled featuring a child’s crayon drawing of a Barney-like figure holding hands with headless stick figures. Below it, the caption read: *“I love you… to pieces.”* The image was met with viral acclaim and widespread online speculation about the tone of the film.

A full ARG experience titled “Join the Club” is expected to begin in early 2028, featuring distorted fan mail, fake club cards, and cassette tapes sent to participants. Analog trailers, VHS-era lost episode reels, and a simulated hotline are planned to support the film’s pre-release campaign.

Connection to the DIU[edit | edit source]

Barney: Love and Dismemberment is part of the second phase of the Distorted Innocence Universe, functioning as a standalone narrative while incorporating cross-universe elements. The film reportedly includes subtle references to “The Archivist” and “Memory Leak,” including a corrupted VHS tape marked "PURPLE // RETENTION" and subliminal footage referencing The Custodian Initiative.

Release[edit | edit source]

The film is scheduled for a 2028 theatrical release. It will debut after the premiere of Memory Leak and prior to The Archivist, marking a tonal shift in the DIU towards more mythological horror and character-driven tragedy.
