Call of Duty: Dark Warfare Reborn is a 2035 first-person shooter game developed by Air Studios and published by Mob Productions. It is the fourth installment in the Dark Warfare sub-series and serves as a soft reboot following the conclusion of the original Veil Saga in Call of Duty: Dark Warfare III (2032). The game was released worldwide on October 24, 2035, for PlayStation 6, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

Set in a reconstructed post-Collapse world decades after the destruction of the Veil, Reborn introduces a new continuity centered around fractured memories, hidden realities, and the mysterious reappearance of events thought erased from existence. The campaign follows a multinational task force investigating impossible military incidents connected to a phenomenon known as Echo Bleed, in which fragments of destroyed timelines begin resurfacing across the world.

The game also introduces an entirely new Zombies storyline while retaining thematic connections to previous entries. Rather than directly continuing the original Veil narrative, Zombies explores the consequences of reality being imperfectly restored after the collapse of the Null Realm. The mode follows a new cast of survivors trapped within locations affected by temporal decay and memory corruption as they uncover evidence that the destruction of the Veil may not have been permanent.

Dark Warfare Reborn received widespread critical acclaim upon release, with praise directed toward its visual presentation, atmospheric storytelling, multiplayer innovations, and the reinvention of Zombies. Critics highlighted the game’s darker tone and psychological horror influences, while many considered its Zombies mode to be one of the strongest reinventions in franchise history.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Call of Duty: Dark Warfare Reborn introduces several major gameplay overhauls designed around environmental instability, realism, and psychological tension. The campaign features semi-open mission structures, advanced squad command systems, dynamic civilian interactions, and adaptive enemy AI capable of altering tactics based on player behavior.

A new mechanic known as Echo Distortion affects gameplay throughout the campaign. During active distortions, environments may temporarily transform into alternate versions of themselves, enemy units may phase unpredictably between locations, and audio or visual hallucinations may obscure battlefield awareness. Unlike previous Veil-related events, Echo Distortions appear subtle and grounded rather than openly supernatural.

The multiplayer mode introduces Incursion Zones, evolving maps affected by environmental events, weather systems, and dimensional instability. Several maps feature dynamic timeline shifts that alter portions of the map mid-match, changing routes, objectives, and combat flow. Traditional modes return alongside the new Collapse playlist, a large-scale mode where players compete while surviving progressively worsening Echo events.

Gunsmith returns with deeper weapon degradation systems and field modification mechanics. Weapons now physically deteriorate during prolonged matches in certain modes, affecting recoil, handling, and reliability until repaired through supply stations.

Zombies returns as a round-based mode featuring a completely new cast and storyline. The mode introduces Fractured Artifacts, reality-shifting relics capable of modifying map layouts, enemy behavior, and progression systems during gameplay. The mode also adds Persistent Progression Nodes, allowing players to unlock long-term upgrades tied directly to exploration and hidden quests across maps.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Campaign[edit | edit source]

In 2041, the world has largely rebuilt following the unexplained Collapse Events that devastated civilization several decades earlier. Although governments publicly attribute the disasters to experimental warfare and global infrastructure failures, rumors persist regarding cities that vanished entirely, military operations erased from history, and survivors reporting impossible memories that no longer officially exist.

Captain Adrian Cross, an operative working for the international security coalition Aegis Initiative, is deployed to investigate an incident in northern Alaska where an entire research facility disappeared during a snowstorm before reappearing several hours later with every member of the staff missing. Cross discovers evidence of an unknown phenomenon designated Echo Bleed, in which fragments of alternate realities briefly overlap with the present world.

Cross is joined by intelligence analyst Lena Mercer, former special forces operative Isaac Vance, and scientist Dr. Naomi Kessler, one of the few remaining experts studying pre-Collapse anomalies. Their investigation leads them across abandoned military installations, quarantined urban districts, and hidden underground laboratories where governments secretly continued researching reality manipulation technologies after the Collapse.

As Echo events spread worldwide, entire sections of cities begin shifting unpredictably between different versions of history. During operations in Moscow, Cairo, Hong Kong, and Chicago, Cross encounters hostile entities resembling distorted human soldiers whose identities cannot be traced through any existing military records.

Kessler eventually reveals that remnants of the Veil still exist beneath reality itself. Although the Veil was shattered during the Null Collapse decades earlier, fragments survived in hidden regions known as Echo Zones. Governments attempted to study these fragments in secret, inadvertently destabilizing reality once again.

The investigation eventually uncovers a covert organization known as Orpheus Directive, which has been intentionally triggering Echo events in an attempt to recover lost knowledge from destroyed timelines. Led by former Aegis commander Victor Hale, Orpheus believes humanity’s current reality is incomplete and unstable due to the destruction of the Veil.

Hale claims the Collapse erased countless civilizations, technologies, and entire histories that could have transformed humanity. By reopening controlled fractures, he intends to reconstruct the missing pieces of reality itself regardless of the consequences.

The campaign culminates in an assault on the Atlas Vault, a hidden underground facility constructed beneath the ruins of Geneva where Orpheus has activated a massive resonance engine built from recovered Veil fragments. As Echo Bleeds spiral out of control across the globe, Cross and his team fight through overlapping realities inside the collapsing facility.

Cross eventually confronts Hale within the core of the Atlas Engine as fragments of alternate timelines flood the facility. Hale insists that reality cannot survive in its current fragmented state and attempts to merge himself with the engine to stabilize the fractures permanently.

Cross kills Hale and destroys the Atlas Engine, temporarily halting the global Echo events. However, in the aftermath, Kessler discovers that one final fracture remains active somewhere beneath the Pacific Ocean. In a post-credits scene, a distorted transmission containing the voice of Edward Richtofen briefly appears across multiple military communication networks before disappearing entirely.

No.TitleOriginal air date
1"Hollow Point"October 24, 2035 (2035-10-24)
In 1997, a classified American military facility hidden beneath a remote Nevada town suffers a catastrophic containment breach after researchers accidentally reactivate a dormant Echo fragment discovered deep underground. Survivors Elena Cruz, Marcus Reid, David Mercer, and Akira Sato become trapped inside the facility as reality around them begins collapsing into overlapping versions of the town. The undead rapidly overrun Hollow Point while military forces attempt to erase all evidence of the incident. As the group explores the facility, they uncover evidence that the Echo fragment predates the original Collapse by centuries and may be connected to the first known appearance of the Veil itself. After activating an abandoned emergency reactor beneath the town and battling through increasingly unstable fractures, the crew defeat the entity known as the Watcher and escape moments before the entire facility disappears into the Echo.
2"Dead Signal"October 24, 2035 (2035-10-24)
Following coordinates hidden within the Hollow Point facility, the crew travel to an abandoned Soviet numbers station hidden deep within the forests of eastern Europe. The station continues broadcasting mysterious transmissions despite being deserted for decades, while reality around the surrounding forest constantly shifts between different time periods. The crew discover that Soviet scientists attempted to communicate with alternate timelines during the Cold War using an experimental resonance array hidden beneath the station. However, the broadcasts instead attracted hostile entities from beyond reality itself. As the undead overrun the facility, the crew restore power to the resonance array and intercept a fragmented transmission mentioning an organization called Janus. After battling through collapsing bunkers and defeating the station’s corrupted overseer, the crew discover recordings suggesting that Echo fragments have been secretly influencing world events for decades.
3"The Black Shore"February 12, 2036 (2036-02-12)
The crew journey to an isolated island off the coast of Scotland after tracing Janus activity to a ruined coastal fortress consumed by permanent storms and temporal instability. The island, known locally as the Black Shore, has vanished repeatedly throughout history before mysteriously reappearing decades later. As the crew explore flooded catacombs, ruined villages, and ancient underground chambers beneath the island, they uncover evidence that the fortress once served as a prison designed to contain an entity known only as the Sleepless King. Elena begins experiencing visions of previous cycles connected to the island while Mercer discovers records describing experiments conducted there long before the twentieth century. After activating ancient seals hidden throughout the fortress and battling through an enormous storm consuming the coastline, the crew confront the Sleepless King within the submerged ruins beneath the island.
4"Ashes of Kyoto"May 21, 2036 (2036-05-21)
Following clues recovered from the Black Shore, the crew travel to Kyoto after reports emerge of entire districts becoming trapped within repeating loops of destruction and fire. The city has become affected by severe Echo instability, causing sections of modern Kyoto to merge with ancient versions of itself during active fractures. Akira becomes increasingly haunted by visions connected to his family’s past as the crew uncover evidence that Janus established hidden operations beneath the city decades earlier. Throughout the map, the crew battle through collapsing streets, burning temples, abandoned subway tunnels, and distorted historical districts while attempting to stabilize the fractures spreading across the city. Deep beneath Kyoto, the crew discover a hidden archive containing records connected to the origins of Janus and evidence that the organization has been searching for a location known as the First Threshold.
5"Beneath Eden"August 20, 2036 (2036-08-20)
The crew descend into Beneath Eden, an enormous underground complex hidden beneath Antarctica where Janus conducted experiments involving Echo fragments recovered from across the world. The facility has become consumed by reality distortion, causing entire laboratories and living quarters to overlap with alternate versions of themselves. As the crew explore the frozen complex, they uncover evidence that Janus believed the destruction of the Veil did not end the cycle, but merely forced reality into a weakened state incapable of fully stabilizing itself. Elena eventually discovers that Echo fragments are gradually reconnecting to one another beneath the Earth’s surface. After restoring power to the facility and surviving increasingly violent fractures, the crew descend into the lowest chambers of Beneath Eden and discover the dormant remains of a massive structure hidden beneath the ice.
6"First Threshold"November 18, 2036 (2036-11-18)
In the finale of the first Reborn storyline, the crew locate the First Threshold hidden beneath the Pacific Ocean within the ruins of an ancient civilization that predates recorded history. The Threshold is revealed to be the original point where reality first fractured long before humanity understood the existence of the Veil. Janus leader Dr. Evelyn Voss reveals that civilizations throughout history repeatedly discovered fragments of the Threshold before ultimately destroying themselves attempting to control it. As the crew battle through submerged ruins, collapsing structures, and massive Echo storms consuming the ocean itself, reality around them begins destabilizing permanently. Elena eventually learns that the Threshold is awakening once again due to humanity’s continued interference with Echo fragments. During the final confrontation, the crew activate ancient stabilizers hidden throughout the ruins while fighting a colossal entity emerging from the Threshold itself. Although the stabilizers temporarily seal the fracture, the ending reveals that Echo activity across the world continues increasing despite the crew’s victory.

Development[edit | edit source]

Call of Duty: Dark Warfare Reborn entered development in late 2032 immediately following the release of Dark Warfare III. Air Studios described the project as both a continuation and reinvention of the sub-series following the conclusion of the original Veil Saga.

The campaign was designed to feel more grounded and psychologically focused than previous installments while still retaining large-scale dimensional instability as a central theme. Developers cited psychological horror films and conspiracy thrillers as major influences during production.

The Zombies mode underwent significant redesigns during early development. Air Studios wanted the new storyline to feel mysterious and unsettling rather than immediately cosmic in scale. According to the developers, the mode was intentionally structured to slowly reintroduce the existence of reality fractures and Echo phenomena over time rather than immediately continuing the scale of the original Veil Saga.

The game uses IW 13.0, featuring substantial improvements to lighting, weather systems, environmental transitions, destruction physics, and enemy AI systems. Several maps feature real-time environmental transformations capable of altering gameplay flow dynamically during matches.

Music[edit | edit source]

The score for Dark Warfare Reborn was composed by Jack Wall, Kevin Sherwood, and Sarah Schachner. The soundtrack combines industrial percussion, atmospheric synth textures, orchestral horror motifs, and distorted vocal arrangements intended to emphasize psychological tension throughout the game.

Each Zombies map features a dedicated musical easter egg track tied directly to the map’s narrative themes.
