The first season of the Australian television series School Warrior, which is based on original material of a costumed school speedster who saves his home town Midvale.[1] The season is produced by Freddie Goodwin who also serves as the showrunner.[2] The season was released on December 14, 2024.[3] The second part of the season, dubbed "Part II", was released on September 1, 2025.[4]

Development on the season began on March 21, 2024.[5] Principal photography commenced in April 2024 and concluded in early August 2024, following budget reductions and behind-the-scenes issues that resulted in the suspension of further production. The season was subsequently restructured into two parts. The first part was released according to the original broadcast plan, while the second part, titled Part II, was released on September 1, 2025.

In June 2024, it was revealed that Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Noah Jupe, and Emma Myers would portray Miles Porter / Velocity, Kendra Vale, Jason, and Emily, respectively.[6] In October 2024, Cillian Murphy was cast as Victor Blackthorn.[7] In November 2024, Giancarlo Esposito was cast as Principal Carter.[8] The series was renewed for a second season in March 2025.

Miles Porter, a quiet teen still grieving his mother’s death and living with an emotionally absent father, struggles through school until a bullying incident in the locker room triggers a burst of super-speed he didn’t know he possessed, frightening him and pushing him to confide only in his best friend—and soon girlfriend—Kendra, who becomes his anchor as he experiments with his new abilities. Flashbacks reveal the painful decline and loss of his mother, deepening his isolation, but his growing bond with Kendra begins to pull him out of the darkness. Meanwhile, criminal mastermind Victor Blackthorn obtains a mysterious energy device and hunts the missing crates linked to it, which leads him directly to Miles, unleashing a brutal rooftop battle that forces Miles to use his powers openly for the first time. Reeling from the fight and the mysterious green mist that kills two henchmen in front of him, Miles chooses to fully embrace responsibility, reveals his powers to friends Jason and Emily, and forms a makeshift team as he vows—guided by memories of his mother—to protect Midvale.
22"The Things You Can't See"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Miles stops a high-tech armored heist in a chaotic chase through Midvale City, saving civilians before retreating to regroup while Kendra, Jason, and Emily build a basement command setup to track the attackers; at school, Miles navigates shifting dynamics as Jackson apologizes for his past bullying and agrees to keep Miles’s identity quiet, while Principal Carter secretly studies footage of Miles’s powers and grows hostile interest. Blackthorn escalates by deploying drones, confronting Miles directly, and using a psychic-tech mist to crush his confidence and strip his speed, leaving Miles terrified and powerless. Kendra finds him broken, comforts him through one of his lowest moments, and the friend group helps him analyze the loss while Carter and Blackthorn plot in the shadows using a prototype meant to suppress or burn out powered individuals. As Miles trains desperately in an empty industrial park, a lightning event surges violently through him, triggering instability that he can’t control before he collapses. He’s rushed to the hospital in critical condition as his powers flare unpredictably, leaving the team terrified and powerless to help while the episode ends with Miles unconscious, his lightning flickering dangerously.
33"Dangerous Illusions"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Miles struggles on the operating table as uncontrolled blue lightning tears through equipment while Kendra watches helplessly from the hallway until doctors admit they have no idea what his body is becoming, pushing Kendra, Jason, and Emily to investigate the unnatural storm that originally gave him his powers. Kendra visits Miles’s estranged father, Robert, and forces him to return, giving Miles a final chance at emotional grounding as he wakes with newly stabilized lightning and rapidly evolving super-hearing powerful enough to detect a failing news helicopter, which he races across the city to save. Before he can process anything, Blackthorn confronts him in a café, murders Robert in front of him, and escapes, triggering Miles’s grief-fueled rampage back at the basement until Blackthorn returns, taunts him, and vanishes again. Miles breaks down with Kendra, convinced he is responsible for his father’s death, unaware that Blackthorn and the corrupted Principal Carter are activating a massive life-draining machine inside an industrial complex, preparing a portal to summon an otherworldly army.
44"A World Unseen"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Miles struggles through his father’s funeral while trying to contain his grief, later promising at the grave to make things right before throwing himself deeper into becoming a hero as he sketches suit designs with Kendra at school; a bullying incident escalates when Brad mocks Miles’s drawings and Kendra floors him with a punch, triggering a suspension from Principal Carter, whose hidden motives and faint green glow suggest something far darker than discipline. Meanwhile, a metallic metahuman named Silverstrike robs a bank, forcing Miles to intervene in his makeshift gear, and though his lightning barely affects Silverstrike’s alloy body, his speed and precision eventually drive the villain off. This attack draws the attention of Detectives Foster and Wells, who uncover scorch-mark patterns linking previous incidents and grow suspicious of both the teenage speedster and Carter’s secrecy. As Miles unveils his completed suit to his friends and embraces the name Velocity, Silverstrike strikes again at night, but Velocity defeats and hands him to police, publicly revealing his alias to the city. Carter’s behavior worsens as investigators circle him, while Miles and Kendra share a quiet moment at home, committing to protect Midvale and each other.
55"Echoes of Power"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Jonathan’s backstory unfolds as he recalls being an isolated, resentful kid who was constantly overlooked until a strange emerald energy in the forest bonded to him and twisted him into Blackthorn, giving him the power he always felt he deserved while burning away the last pieces of who he used to be. In the present, Miles, Ethan, and Riley attempt to build a device that can disrupt Blackthorn’s energy signature, but their prototype overloads and nearly vaporises half the science room, drawing suspicion from teachers and tightening pressure around Miles’s double life. Blackthorn escalates his attacks on Midvale by draining civilians for strength, forcing Miles—despite being outmatched—to intervene as Velocity and barely make it out alive. Detectives Foster and Wells intensify their investigation into Carter Thorne, discovering sealed files and inconsistencies that link him to the rising metahuman activity, while Velocity approaches them for an uneasy information-sharing arrangement. Miles later confronts Carter on his own and is brutally defeated, realising Carter is far more dangerous than he imagined. The episode ends when a lawyer delivers Miles a USB recorded by his late father, revealing he was secretly Barry Allen and implying Miles’s powers came from something far deeper, leaving Miles shaken as he prepares for what comes next.
66"Through the Storm"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
A wave of uncontrolled emotion sweeps an underground club when Lila Vance’s powers spike, but Miles calms her and realizes she isn’t a threat — just overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Kendra breaks down after three positive pregnancy tests, confides in Emily, and then tells Miles, who panics before promising to support her. Carter is arrested but brutally escapes, killing officers before Velocity arrives too late, sending Miles spiraling as Carter disappears. Jason finishes his warsuit, and when Kendra and Miles reveal the pregnancy, he and Emily rally behind them. Kendra’s parents panic but ultimately accept the news, even insisting Miles move in for stability. President Hayes names Velocity a citywide hero while declaring Carter and Blackthorn the most wanted metahumans. Lila later breaks into an animal shelter to free animals, and Miles catches her but chooses to help rather than stop her. Jason tests the warsuit by dismantling a gang setup, crossing paths with Miles again. Everything converges when Jason warns that Carter and Blackthorn have armed enough explosives to devastate Midvale. Miles infiltrates the warehouse and starts disabling crates before Blackthorn and Carter ambush him. A brutal three-way fight erupts until Jason crashes in with the warsuit, but Carter and Blackthorn open a massive green portal, revealing a red-eyed armored figure who steps through, crushes them both, and leaves Miles wrecked in the rubble as a blinding light ends the episode.
77"New World Order"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Miles barely survives Oblivion’s arrival in the ruined warehouse, shielding an injured Jason as the armored harbinger shrugs off every attack until Lila disrupts his killing blow, forcing him to retreat while vowing the world will fall. Afterward, Miles recovers at home and shares a raw, grounding moment with Kendra as they confront the fear of losing each other and the reality of their baby on the way. Oblivion then kills Carter without hesitation and orders Blackthorn to awaken a clone army before returning to his dimension to prepare an invasion. Jason debuts his upgraded Sentinel armor in a space test run and later aids NYPD in a chaotic, super-powered chase, cementing himself as a hero. At school, life pretends to return to normal under new principal Ms. Harper, though her overly smooth demeanor raises quiet suspicion. Detective Foster warns officers to avoid Blackthorn’s spreading anomalies after several disintegrate, realizing only Velocity can intervene safely. Miles and Jason then confront Blackthorn at an abandoned power plant, combining speed and Sentinel’s new kinetic systems to overpower him, though he slips away through a portal. The episode ends with Miles breaking down under the pressure of failing his parents’ legacy, only for Kendra, Jason, and Emily to pull him back and remind him he isn’t carrying this war alone.
88"Beneath the Ashes"Alex BrowAlex BrowDecember 21, 2024 (2024-12-21)1022.82
Miles and the team repair their gear while the city reels from the fallout of Oblivion’s collapse, and a strange analog signal draws them to the abandoned rail yard where Blackthorn waits beside a pulsing portal, warning that the next phase of his plan will “wake the gods” before vanishing and leaving the team shaken. At school, a new student named Kyren watches Miles with unnatural precision while Oblivion’s whisper haunts him, revealing he carries a borrowed identity tied to the same corrupted power; when Jason and Emily confront him that night, Kyren’s abilities break containment and he accidentally hurls them through warped gravity before fleeing. The team tracks his energy trail to an underground facility where they discover Blackthorn dead, Carter tortured, and Kyren identified as the one who turned on them; moments later, a blast on the ridge leads them to Lila’s body marked with Oblivion’s spiral, confirming Kyren’s message and obliterating Miles’s last sense of safety. Grief drives Miles into the city as he runs through the wreckage, realizing loss can’t be outrun, only carried, and as Oblivion’s influence spreads again, he accepts that he isn’t finished — the war is only beginning.
Part II: Season 2
99"Chapter One: Alignment"Freddie GoodwinFreddie Goodwin & Jackson GreeneSeptember 1, 2025 (2025-09-01)2012.32
Miles Porter and his allies track a surge of anomalous energy to an abandoned rail yard, where they discover a concealed underground chamber housing a convergence device operated by Kyren, a methodical figure who claims to be correcting reality rather than attacking it. Kyren confronts the group and easily subdues Miles by corrupting his blue lightning into unstable green energy, revealing his awareness of Miles’s father and implying a long-running experiment tied to the “Gap.” As Kyren incapacitates the others and prepares to initiate alignment, Detective Foster intervenes, forcing him to retreat through a portal. In the aftermath, Miles struggles with lingering energy instability and growing doubts about his identity, while Kyren continues influencing Midvale through subtle power surges and behavioral disturbances. Kyren later escalates his plan at Midvale General Hospital, incapacitating civilians as Miles confronts him again; although Miles manages to injure Kyren, he is unable to prevent his escape, drawing the attention of Captain Reynolds and leading to an uneasy covert agreement between law enforcement and Velocity. That night, Kendra reveals to Miles that her pregnancy ended in an early loss, compounding his guilt and emotional strain. In the episode’s closing moments, Kyren infiltrates a secret containment facility and makes contact with Oblivion, a previously imprisoned entity, revealing that his corrective campaign is part of a much larger plan.
1010"Chapter Two: The Other-Side"Freddie GoodwinFreddie Goodwin & Jackson GreeneSeptember 1, 2025 (2025-09-01)2012.32
In the aftermath of the hospital incident, Midvale is gripped by widespread but subtle disturbances as power grids strain, residents experience sudden emotional episodes, and the city itself appears increasingly unstable, prompting Miles Porter to sense that Kyren’s actions have not ended but evolved. While monitoring the anomalies, Emily determines that Kyren did not create a traditional breach or portal; instead, he destabilized the boundary between reality and an adjacent parallel state she identifies as the “Other-side,” causing localized misalignments in which people and places begin to partially synchronize rather than cross over. As the disturbances intensify, Emily traces the strongest boundary fault to Midvale High School, where Miles, Kendra, Jason, and Emily investigate and encounter hostile “echoes,” fragmented, student-shaped manifestations that appear to be remnants of individuals caught between states of existence and which grow more aggressive in proximity to emotional trauma. Miles confronts and disperses the first echo, realizing it is not a creature but a warning, while evidence suggests the phenomenon is adaptive rather than isolated. Concurrently, Detective Foster responds to unexplained alarms and distorted security footage at the school and independently identifies the event as non-electrical, arriving on scene and forming an uneasy, covert understanding with Miles to quietly clear the building while avoiding wider law enforcement escalation. Deeper within the school, additional echoes emerge, reacting violently to grief and fear, and Emily concludes that Kyren is not merely destabilizing reality but recruiting or exploiting emotional fractures to strengthen the Other-side’s presence. The crisis culminates in the school gymnasium when Kyren appears and deliberately amplifies the instability, tearing open a vertical fracture that releases numerous echoes, overwhelming the space until Miles stabilizes the rupture by channeling and sustaining his energy while Emily collapses the breach, forcing Kyren to retreat after mapping the city’s vulnerabilities. Although the immediate threat is contained and the boundary stabilizes, it becomes clear that the distortion has dispersed into the population rather than vanished, embedding itself within stress, grief, and unresolved loss. In the aftermath, Foster acknowledges that Midvale has become a front line, while Miles and Kendra privately confront the emotional cost of recent events, recognizing that the Other-side appears shaped by what people lose rather than what they fear. The episode concludes with a glimpse into the Other-side itself, revealed as a vast, unstable expanse of fractured spaces, floating remnants of familiar places, and negative absences where reality has decayed, which subtly reconfigures as if responding to activity from the human world, suggesting that the boundary disturbance has awakened something that is now actively aware.

Development[edit | edit source]

In 2021, series showrunner Freddie Goodwin revealed his plans to develop a superhero series inspired by the DC Comics character The Flash.[28] However, he noted that due to licensing restrictions, he could not directly incorporate elements from the comics, aside from allowing characters to reference certain names.[29] Around the same time, series star Asa Butterfield disclosed that discussions about renewing the series for a second and third season had taken place but were temporarily put on hold to prioritize the completion of the first season.[30] Butterfield signed a one-year contract for 10 episodes, earning a reported $120,000 per episode for his role.[31]

In September 2024, production on the season was halted after eight episodes had been completed and partial filming on a ninth episode.[32] Goodwin announced that the season would be shortened to eight episodes, down from the originally planned 13.[33]

In January 2025, Goodwin later confirmed that the remaining five episodes would be produced and released separately as a continuation of the season.[34] The material was internally referred to as the "second season prologue."[35]

Writing[edit | edit source]

Discussing the events of the first season, Goodwin described the hero, Miles Porter, as a character distinct from traditional superheroes, emphasizing his relatable and grounded past, which many viewers may find familiar.[36] Goodwin also teased the season’s villain, describing them as "terrifying" and capable of pushing Miles to his absolute limits.[37] Additionally, Goodwin hinted that the eighth episode would take a unique approach by centering entirely on the villain, making it the only episode in the season to exclude the traditional main cast.[38]

Casting[edit | edit source]

On June 7, 2024, Asa Butterfield was announced as the first actor cast in the series, taking on the lead role of Miles Porter, also known as Velocity.[39] Just a week later, on June 14, Hailee Steinfeld was confirmed to portray Kendra Vale,[40] while Noah Jupe joined the cast as Jason Smith.[41] The casting announcements sparked widespread discussion among fans.[42] While the overall reaction was largely positive, particularly for Steinfeld and Jupe, Butterfield’s casting faced some criticism, with detractors labeling him as an "unexpected" or "odd choice" for the role.[43] Despite the mixed reception, supporters praised Butterfield’s acting credentials and expressed confidence in his ability to bring the character of Velocity to life.[44]

On July 4, 2024, Emma Myers joined the cast as Emily Styles, marking an exciting addition to the series.[45] Shortly after, it was confirmed that acclaimed actors Cillian Murphy and Giancarlo Esposito would also appear in key roles, generating significant global anticipation.[46] Murphy was later revealed to be portraying the enigmatic Victor Blackthorn,[47] while Esposito would take on the role of the formidable Principal Carter.[48]
