Sentinel Prime is an upcoming American science fiction superhero film produced by Mob Productions and directed by Connor Blake. The screenplay is written by Jenna Wu. It is the second installment in the Mob Unified Franchise and serves as a continuation of the universe established by Duskbreakers (2021). The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on May 20, 2022.

Set in the aftermath of the Eclipse Event, Sentinel Prime follows the rise of a mysterious new protector in a world still reeling from the appearance of enhanced individuals and the return of sunlight. As the global balance of power shifts and governments scramble to regain control, the emergence of an enigmatic figure known as the Sentinel forces new alliances and confrontations among both survivors and those who seek to exploit the chaos.

Plot

One year after the Eclipse Event, the world remains unstable as sunlight gradually returns to New Avalon. The city, once shrouded in perpetual twilight, is now plagued by both unrest and hope as people with newfound abilities struggle to adapt. Dr. Linh Voss, an engineer and physicist haunted by the unintended consequences of her research, oversees the Sentinel program: an armored initiative designed to protect civilians and restore trust in public safety.

When an extremist group calling themselves the Daybreakers attacks a government convoy, ex-military officer Elijah Ward is recruited by Voss to become the first Sentinel. Outfitted with an advanced exosuit powered by energy harvested from the Eclipse breach, Ward takes on the identity of the Sentinel—a symbol meant to unite the fractured city. As he patrols the streets, Sentinel’s actions inspire hope among some citizens but draw suspicion and hostility from others, including activist Sofia Calderon, who accuses the government of using enhanced technology to consolidate power.

Mara Sloan, a seasoned intelligence agent, is tasked with monitoring both the Sentinel and emerging powered individuals, while survivor Terry Grant leads a civilian militia skeptical of any authority figure. Tensions rise when a series of attacks target public infrastructure and evidence surfaces that Miles Redding, a tech mogul with ties to Voss’s past, may be supplying the Daybreakers with illegal augmentation tech. As the Daybreakers escalate their campaign, they reveal their intent to trigger a second cataclysm using stolen Sentinel technology, threatening to plunge the world back into darkness.

Elijah is forced to confront his own trauma and doubts, ultimately joining forces with Sofia and Terry to expose Redding’s scheme. In a climactic battle atop the city’s solar array, Voss disables the doomsday device while Elijah, nearly sacrificing himself, uses the Sentinel suit to absorb a massive energy surge and save New Avalon. In the aftermath, the city begins to heal, new laws are drafted to regulate enhanced technology, and the Sentinel—now a public hero—quietly retires, his true identity kept secret as the world prepares for new challenges ahead.

Cameo appearances by Florence Pugh (Elise Cartwright) and John Boyega (Mason Grey) connect Sentinel Prime to the events of Duskbreakers.

Production

Development of Sentinel Prime began in late 2019 as Mob Productions mapped out the first chapter of the Mob Unified Franchise. Director Connor Blake was brought on for his work in ensemble science fiction and action thrillers, while Jenna Wu was hired to write the screenplay, aiming to explore the evolving dynamics of a society changed by the events of Duskbreakers. Producers Freddie Goodwin and Travis King stated that the sequel would expand the franchise's worldbuilding and introduce new locations, characters, and philosophical themes.

Principal photography took place in Atlanta and Vancouver from July to November 2021, with large-scale practical effects and new visual techniques differentiating the look of Sentinel Prime from its predecessor. The production team blended high-concept science fiction with character-driven drama, expanding the Mob Unified Franchise’s narrative scope.

Release

Sentinel Prime was released theatrically in the United States on May 20, 2022. The film was distributed by Mob Productions and marks the second chapter in the franchise’s ongoing narrative.

Reception

Sentinel Prime received positive reviews from critics, who praised its ambitious worldbuilding, strong performances, and visual effects, though some noted the film’s dense plotting and occasional tonal shifts. The film grossed $392 million worldwide and cemented the MUF’s reputation as a distinctive new cinematic universe.
