In the aftermath of the new Multiverse's collapse, orchestrated by the malevolent Per Degaton, Barry Allen's investigation into bizarre weather anomalies in Central City leads him to a critical assembly of heroes. Among them are Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Sara Lance/White Canary, Ray Palmer/The Atom, John Diggle/Spartan, Iris West-Allen, Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, Cisco Ramon/Vibe, Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane, Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, John Constantine, Mia Queen/Green Arrow, Harrison Wells/Pariah, Joe West, Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Ava Sharpe, Nate Heywood/Steel, Zari Tomaz, and Kate Kane/Batwoman. The heroes, soon to be christened the "Justice League," are alerted to Per Degaton's menacing plot by Oliver, now the Spectre. He entrusts Barry with leadership just as Per Degaton emerges through a portal, launching an assault on Central City. The ensuing battle escalates when a Brainiac doppelgänger joins, outmaneuvering the League and inciting infighting, enabling Per Degaton's strategic retreat. Oliver, understanding the gravity of their situation, sternly reminds everyone of the necessity for unity in their upcoming confrontations.

Production[edit | edit source]

Development[edit | edit source]

In April 2020, series star Grant Gustin said there had been discussions about renewing the series through a ninth season, but those were stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9] In January 2022, when the eighth season was in its mid-season hiatus, Gustin signed a one-year deal for 15 episodes for a ninth season, with his salary increased to $200,000 per episode.[10] On March 22, 2022, The CW renewed the series for a ninth season.[11] On August 1, it was announced that it would be the final season of the series, with an abbreviated 13-episode order.[12] Showrunner Eric Wallace stated that the cast and crew had originally expected the series to end with the eighth season, but after the ninth season was ordered, Wallace rewrote the season eight finale to not be a series finale.[13]

Writing[edit | edit source]

Prior to learning that the ninth season would be the series' last and that it would have only 13 episodes, Wallace created additional storylines he hoped to include in the ninth season and a potential tenth season. These would have included a wrap-up to Legends of Tomorrow,[14] the appearance of Max Mercury,[15] an original storyline titled The Forever War,[16] an adaptation of the Blackest Night storyline,[16] and a storyline featuring the Justice League fighting Despero in another alien invasion.[16] After the final 13 episodes were ordered, Wallace's plans for the 200th episode were moved to the series finale.[14] In the end, Eric Wallace was replaced with Freddie Goodwin for the final season. Goodwin said the first five episodes of the season would be about a story-arc called The Flash War, which will be one of the "biggest story-arcs to date", with lots of speedsters, action, and focus on Barry. He confirmed episodes 4 and 5 would be titled "The War of the Speedsters, Part 1 & Part 2". He said these two episodes will be the biggest parts of the eighth graphic novel.

Goodwin explained that he made sure the budget would be used for the final graphic novel and less would be used for the first eight episodes of the season.

Casting[edit | edit source]

Main cast members Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Nicolet, Kayla Compton and Brandon McKnight return as Barry Allen / The Flash,[10] Iris West-Allen,[17] Cecile Horton,[18] Allegra Garcia[1] and Chester P. Runk.[19] Jesse L. Martin, who portrayed Joe West throughout the series, exited as a regular, though he was expected to recur in the season.[20] In October 2022, Jon Cor was promoted to series regular for the season.[21]

Danielle Panabaker, who portrayed Caitlin Snow and Frost in previous seasons, was reported to be returning,[1] but was later confirmed to be playing a new character whose identity was later revealed in the second episode.[22] Ahead of this, Panabaker stated that this character would be called Snow at the beginning of the season;[23] Snow was later revealed to be using the name Khione.[24] Carlos Valdes was unable to reprise his role as Cisco Ramon / Vibe for the finale due to scheduling conflicts with his starring role in the Hulu series Up Here.[25]

Katee Sackhoff, who played Amunet Black in the fourth season, expressed interest in returning for the ninth season, but wasn't invited back to the show for reasons unknown, which Sackhoff theorize as some involved in the show's production not liking her.[26]

Filming[edit | edit source]

Filming began on September 14, 2022,[27] and concluded on March 6, 2023.[28]

Release[edit | edit source]

The season premiered on February 8, 2023,[1] and the finale aired on May 24, 2023.[29]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Panabaker also portrays Frost in a less prominent capacity.
